GIMP 3.0 introduced editable non-destructive filters, a GTK3 interface, and improvements to display, tablet, text, layer, file-format, and color-management workflows. GIMP 3.2 later added Link Layers and Vector Layers, along with further painting, text, format, and interface updates. These releases expanded GIMP’s capabilities without making it a complete Photoshop replacement.
At the research date of October 7, 2026, the latest stable-series release identified by the official project is GIMP 3.2.6, announced September 10, 2026. Check the official release page before relying on a “latest version” claim, since that can change. GIMP 3.0 remains important because it established the foundation for later 3.x features.

The GIMP Team described GIMP 3.0 as the result of seven years of work. The GTK2-to-GTK3 migration underpinned many interface and platform changes. Read the project’s official GIMP 3.0 release notes for the full feature list.

In GIMP 3.0, most commonly used GEGL filters can stay editable after application rather than being immediately merged into the layer’s pixels. You can revisit a filter, toggle or delete it, or merge it when you want a rendered result. These filters can be saved in an XCF project. If you prefer the older behavior, GIMP offers a “Merge Filters” option.

- Select a layer and apply a supported filter.
- Adjust its settings while keeping the effect editable.
- Toggle or remove the effect to compare with the unfiltered layer.
- Reopen and revise the filter, or add other supported filters.
- Merge the filters when you need to render them into the layer.
This workflow makes experimentation easier to revise, but it does not make every GIMP operation non-destructive. The precise behavior depends on the operation and layer setup. If you encounter a problem, test the workflow on a copy and consult the current release notes.
Are GIMP filters the same as Photoshop adjustment layers?
No. GIMP 3.0’s non-destructive filters are editable effects in the layer workflow. They are useful, but should not be described as a complete equivalent to Photoshop adjustment layers, smart filters, or layer styles.
GIMP’s official roadmap treats the initial non-destructive editing implementation separately from broader adjustment-layer and layer-effects work.

GTK3, displays, tablets, and Wayland
The GTK3 migration supports GIMP 3.0’s interface updates, including CSS-based themes, improved HiDPI scaling, and tablet input support. The release also changed elements such as docks and layer, channel, and path workflows. Linux users gained native Wayland operation while X11 support remained available. The experience can vary with the desktop environment, drivers, and package.

A major interface change can feel unfamiliar to users coming from 2.10. If a Linux setup behaves poorly under Wayland, testing GIMP in an X11 session can help determine whether the display-server integration is involved.
Color management and the CMYK question
GIMP 3.0 continued work on color management and soft-proofing controls, but it did not deliver a complete professional CMYK prepress workflow. Do not choose it expecting a full replacement for dedicated prepress software.
GIMP can still be useful for raster artwork, including work intended for print. Before committing a production workflow, check the exact color features available in your build and confirm output requirements with the printer or prepress provider.
Text, layers, and painting in GIMP 3.0
GIMP 3.0 added editable text styling, including effects such as outlines and shadows. It also lets users select and transform multiple layer items together, and paint tools can expand layers automatically. These are 3.0 features; later text-editor and painting changes belong to 3.2.

File formats and Photoshop compatibility
GIMP 3.0 improved format handling, including particular PSD import/export capabilities. These improvements do not guarantee complete Photoshop-document fidelity: proprietary or application-specific features may be approximated, flattened, or lost. GIMP’s native XCF format remains the safest choice for projects that will continue in GIMP.
For a production migration, test representative files and inspect layers, text, masks, blend modes, and exports. Do not assume that a simple sample proves compatibility for every project.
What did GIMP 3.2 add?
GIMP 3.2 extended the non-destructive direction of 3.0 with two prominent layer types:
- Link Layers: Incorporate external image content that can be transformed without loss of sharpness and updates when the source file changes.
- Vector Layers: Hold shapes with adjustable fill and stroke. GIMP provides a Rasterize action before destructive edits.
Other 3.2 highlights include MyPaint Brush changes, an Overwrite paint mode, text-editor workflow and outline improvements, interface refinements, and a GEGL Filter browser. Format examples include APNG support, JPEG 2000 and DDS BC7 export, additional PSD layer-style import, and SVG/PDF export that can include raster and vector layer information. GIMP 3.2 also added a Total Ink Coverage display in the CMYK selector. These are selected examples, not a claim that every format change is a wholly new format.

Plugins, scripts, and APIs
GIMP 3.0’s expanded APIs, including its non-destructive filter foundation, matter to plugin and script developers. Add-ons written for GIMP 2.10 may need changes or a GIMP 3-compatible release. Check the developer’s official page for compatibility with your GIMP version, operating system, and installation method.
GIMP 3.2 continued API and extensibility work, including more public API access for layers and text outline options. Its GEGL Filter browser is also a new way to find filters.
Should you upgrade from GIMP 2.10?
GIMP 3.x may suit you if you need:
- Editable filter effects in supported workflows.
- Improved HiDPI and tablet input support.
- Native Wayland operation on Linux.
- GIMP 3.0’s text and multi-layer workflow changes.
- GIMP 3.2 Link Layers, Vector Layers, and later workflow improvements.
Test carefully first if you rely on:
- A critical legacy plugin or script.
- An automation or production workflow that has not been tested on GIMP 3.
- Specific PSD features or export behavior that must be preserved.

Migration checklist
- Back up XCF projects and the extensions, scripts, brushes, fonts, and profiles you rely on.
- Install GIMP 3.x alongside the older version when possible.
- Open copies of important projects, not the only originals.
- Test essential plugins, scripts, filters, text, layers, and export routines.
- Inspect representative results before relying on them in production.
- Keep the previous version available until your workflow is validated.
Who should use GIMP 3.x?
- Photographers: Consider it for raster editing and editable filter workflows; verify that required plugins and color workflows meet your needs.
