The Flip & Sew Carrot Table Runner is a quilt-as-you-go decoration designed by Shelley Robson of The Quilted Forest. You sew 1½-inch orange strips through the backing and thin batting as you build the top, trim the carrot shape, bind it, then add a pleated green stem. The finished runner measures 13 × 32¼ inches, including the stem.
The project first appeared in Quilts and More, Spring 2006, and the project page was updated February 23, 2026. All pattern measurements include a ¼-inch seam allowance.
What you will make
This project produces a carrot-shaped, quilted table runner rather than a conventional rectangular runner. Its orange body is assembled directly on the backing and batting, so the piecing and quilting happen together. A separate, stabilized green stem is pleated and attached at the wide end.

The designer also describes a rectangular color option: cover a 15 × 28-inch rectangle with strips, trim it to 13 × 26 inches, and bind it. A novelty-print backing can make that version reversible.

Materials and quantities
The quantities below assume 44/45-inch-wide, 100% cotton fabric.

You will also need a sewing machine, thread, scissors or a rotary cutter and ruler, an iron, and a way to trace the supplied pattern pieces. A walking-foot attachment is recommended during construction to help prevent puckers on the quilt back; it is not mandatory.
Before cutting: understand the pattern pieces
Pattern A
Pattern A is used to cut the backing and batting foundation. Keep the backing right side down when you begin layering.

Pattern B
Pattern B is the carrot outline. It is centered over the strip-covered foundation, then traced and cut to create the finished carrot body.
Pattern C
Pattern C is the stem shape. The stem is fused, stabilized, cut out, zigzagged around its edge, pleated along six marked lines, and attached to the runner.
How to sew the carrot runner
1. Cut and layer the foundation
- Use Pattern A to cut the backing and the 16 × 28-inch batting to the required foundation shape.
- Place the backing fabric right side down.
- Lay the batting on top, aligning the edges.
- If desired, apply quilt basting spray between the layers according to the spray manufacturer’s directions. This step is optional.
2. Build the quilt-as-you-go orange top
- Cut the assorted orange prints into 1½-inch strips.
- Start across the center of the layered backing and batting. Position the first strip with its right side facing up.
- Sew the strip through all layers, using a ¼-inch seam allowance.
- Add the next strip alongside the first. Stitch through the new strip, batting, and backing.
- Flip the newly sewn strip open and finger-press it flat. Continue adding strips in the same way, working outward until the foundation is covered.
- Use a walking foot if available, keeping the layers moving evenly so the backing does not bunch or ripple.
Because every strip is sewn through the batting and backing as it is added, this is a quilt-as-you-go construction rather than a separate piecing-then-quilting process.

3. Trace and cut the carrot shape
- Center Pattern B over the completed strip-covered foundation.
- Trace the outline carefully, checking that the shape is centered before cutting.
- Cut on the traced line to form the carrot body.
4. Make and attach the binding
- Cut 2½-inch bias strips from the mottled orange fabric.
- Join the strips with diagonal seams until you have approximately 75 inches of continuous binding.
- Press the seams as needed and bind the runner’s perimeter using your preferred binding method.
The bias binding follows the carrot outline more readily than straight-grain strips, especially around the tapered point and curved transitions.

- Fuse the green fabric rectangles to lightweight fusible web.
- Layer the fused fabric with the medium-weight cutaway stabilizer as directed by the pattern and fuse the layers together.
- Trace Pattern C onto the stabilized material and cut out the stem.
- Finish the stem edge with a short, wide zigzag stitch. Test the stitch width and length on a scrap first so the edge is covered without distorting it.
6. Pleat and attach the stem
- Locate the six marked pleat lines on the stem.
- Match and press the lines into three pleats.
- Baste the pleats on the marked stitching line to hold them in position.
- Place the stem at the runner’s wide end and attach it on the marked line.
- Fold the stem in half so both portions extend beyond the carrot shape, creating the dimensional leafy end.
Choosing fabrics and the finished look
Orange body
Seven assorted orange prints give the strip-built body the irregular, patchwork appearance associated with a garden carrot. Mix scale and value so neighboring strips remain distinguishable; the pattern does not require a specific print arrangement.
Green stem
Two assorted green fat quarters allow variation between the stem layers. Contrasting greens make the pleats easier to see, while related prints create a quieter botanical effect.

Backing and binding
A novelty-print backing is especially useful for the rectangular color option, where it can make the mat reversible. For the carrot-shaped version, choose a backing that supports the orange and green palette without competing with the outline.

Troubleshooting during construction
The backing is puckering
Reduce drag and shifting by smoothing the backing before each strip, using optional basting spray, and sewing with a walking-foot attachment if your machine accepts one. Do not pull the layers from behind the presser foot.

Verify that each strip is cut to a consistent 1½-inch width and that you are sewing with the stated ¼-inch seam allowance. Flip and finger-press every new strip fully open before adding the next one.

The binding runs short
The project calls for about 75 inches of joined 2½-inch bias binding. Join additional strips before beginning if your fabric cutting or seam width leaves less continuous length than expected.
The stem loses its shape
Check that the fusible web and medium-weight cutaway stabilizer were fused securely. Press the six marked lines into three pleats, then baste before attaching so the folds cannot spread during sewing.

Careful finishing checks
- Confirm the runner measures approximately 13 × 32¼ inches with the stem included.
- Inspect the binding for complete coverage around the point and curves.
- Check that the stem’s zigzag encloses the raw edge.
- Make sure all three pleats remain secured on the marked stitching line.
- Press the finished piece from the appropriate side for the fabrics and fusibles used.
