A yo-yo quilt is made from small fabric rosettes: each fabric yo-yo starts as a circle, gets a folded and stitched edge, then gathers when you pull the thread. Make the units by hand and join them for a quilt—or use a few to add texture to a pillow, bag, garment, or art quilt. It is a portable scrap project; the basic yo-yo surface does not require a sewing machine or a conventional batting-and-backing sandwich.
What is a yo-yo quilt?
A fabric yo-yo is a gathered circle of fabric with a small opening at its center. Individual yo-yos can be joined to make a full quilt or attached to another project as decorative texture. The term refers to the fabric shape, not the spinning toy. For examples of yo-yos used in quilts and other projects, see AllPeopleQuilt’s guide to making yo-yos and Create Whimsy’s fabric yo-yo tutorial.
What you need
- Fabric scraps, quilting cotton, or another lightweight fabric
- A hand-sewing needle and strong or all-purpose thread
- Scissors
- A circle template and a way to mark it
- An iron, if you want to press the fabric before cutting
A piece of cardboard makes a perfectly serviceable circle template. A reusable template or rotary circle-cutting tool can make repeated cutting more consistent, but it is optional. Sewing.org recommends washing and pressing fabric before cutting to reduce the risk of later shrinkage. The Sewing.org yo-yo instructions list these supplies and sizing examples; the Museum of Industry directions recommend extra-strong thread, doubled.

Choose a circle size
The cut circle will gather into a yo-yo much smaller than its original diameter. Sewing.org offers a useful starting rule: cut a circle about twice the desired finished yo-yo diameter plus one-half inch. Its examples are guides, not guaranteed finished measurements; folding and gathering affect the result.
| Cut circle | Approximate finished yo-yo |
|---|---|
| 1 inch | ¼ inch |
| 2 inches | ¾ inch |
| 3 inches | 1¼ inches |
| 4 inches | 1¾ inches |
| 5 inches | 2¼ inches |
| 6 inches | 2¾ inches |
| 7 inches | 3¼ inches |
| 8 inches | 3¾ inches |
These approximate pairs come from Sewing.org; its instructions do not state a publication year. If exact scale matters, make one sample yo-yo before cutting a large batch.

How to make a fabric yo-yo
- Make and trace a template. Draw a circle on cardboard at the cut size you chose. Trace it onto the wrong side of the fabric, then cut out the circle.
- Fold the edge under. With the wrong side facing up, turn a narrow edge toward the wrong side—about ⅛ to ¼ inch. Sewing.org uses a ¼-inch turn-under.
- Sew a running stitch around the circle. Use a hand needle and strong or all-purpose thread. Take stitches through the folded edge and continue around the circle. The Museum of Industry notes that stitches need not be tiny; choose a stitch size that suits the yo-yo.
- Gather the circle. When you reach the starting point, pull the thread gently so the stitched edge gathers toward the center. Adjust the gathers evenly and secure the thread so the yo-yo holds its shape before trimming the thread.
- Repeat and arrange. Make enough units for your project, then lay them out to decide how the colors and prints should sit together.
Ways to use yo-yos
Build a full quilt
Make a collection of yo-yos, arrange them in the layout you want, and join neighboring units by hand. The cited instructions support making and joining yo-yos, but do not establish one universally preferred joining seam. Choose a hand-sewing method that holds the units together in your planned arrangement, and keep the joins consistent across the project.
Start with a small sampler or wall piece
A compact arrangement lets you practice gathering and explore color placement before committing to a larger project. This is a project format suggestion, not a fixed pattern or prescribed unit count.

Add a few as embellishments
Yo-yos can add raised texture to pillows, clothing, bags, postcards, and art quilts. This approach uses fewer units than a full quilt and works when you want the rosettes as accents rather than as the whole surface.

| Choice | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Cardboard template | A small project, testing sizes, or keeping costs low | Each circle must be traced; repeated cutting depends on careful marking. |
| Reusable template or circle cutter | Making many circles of the same size | An optional convenience rather than a requirement. |
| Scraps | Using available fabric and building a varied mix of prints | Color coordination depends on the scraps you have. |
| Selected quilting cotton or lightweight fabric | Planning a coordinated palette or consistent material | Requires choosing fabric specifically for the project. |
| Full quilt | Making the yo-yos the main surface | Requires more units and hand joining than an embellishment project. |
| Small embellished item | Trying the technique or adding a limited accent | Uses yo-yos as details rather than creating a full yo-yo surface. |
Whatever the project, test one circle first if the finished size is important: the gathered result is smaller than the cut fabric, and the published measurements are approximate planning guides.
