Plan a floral border by reading the site before choosing plants: note its light, soil, moisture, dimensions and main viewing points, then select plants that suit those conditions and arrange them for colour, form and a succession of flowers. A scheme that fits its location is more likely to grow well than one chosen from a plant list alone.

Start by understanding the site
Before buying plants, make a simple record of the border. Note its length and depth, how sunlight moves across it, whether the soil tends to stay wet or dry, and any existing features that constrain planting. Also identify the main places from which the border will be seen: from a window, a path, a patio or more than one direction.

Decide what the border needs to do
Choose a few priorities to guide the design. You might want a particular colour effect, flowers across a long part of the growing season, plants for pollinators, winter structure, flowers for cutting or a border that needs relatively little attention. These goals can overlap, but stating them early helps you make choices when a plant suits the site yet does not suit the overall scheme.
Set out the shape and planting structure
Sketch the outline and consider how the border will read from its main viewing points. If you want a curved edge, the University of New Hampshire Extension suggests laying a garden hose along the proposed line, then adjusting it until the curve looks right before digging. Its guidance treats flower-border design as flexible, not as a matter of following rigid rules.

Think about the border as a composition of heights, forms and foliage, not just a collection of flower colours. Where the border is viewed mainly from one side, taller plants can generally be placed farther back and shorter ones toward the front; for an island border viewed from several directions, consider a higher central area with lower planting around it. These are layout options, not fixed rules: the mature size of each plant and the views you want to preserve should determine the final arrangement.
Choose plants that fit, then compose the palette
Check each candidate against the conditions you recorded and against the space it will occupy. The RHS notes that named cultivars can differ in mature size, flower colour, fragrance, hardiness and disease resistance. Those differences matter: a plant’s name alone does not tell you whether a particular selection will fit your site or the intended composition.

- Growing conditions: confirm that the plant suits the border’s light and moisture conditions.
- Mature size: use the stated height and spread to judge where it can fit. Do not assume that plants with the same common name have identical dimensions.
- Colour and foliage: consider how flowers and leaves will look beside neighbouring plants, and whether the effect should be harmonious or contrasting.
- Form and upkeep: consider flower shape, growth habit, and whether a plant will need support or other attention in your garden.
There is no universal spacing figure for a mixed border: spacing depends on the plant and its mature spread. Use the information for the particular plant you select rather than applying one distance to every species.
Plan flowers across the season
For a perennial border, combine plants with different flowering times and flower shapes instead of relying on one brief flush. The RHS says that this diversity can help support pollinators and beneficial wildlife throughout the growing season. The result also gives the border changing points of interest, while foliage and plant form contribute when a particular plant is not in bloom.

- Features a curated mix of 20 unique flower seed packets, including sunflowers, marigolds, cosmos, lavender, and more, for a colorful and diverse garden display.
There is no single plant list that suits every border. For wildlife-friendly planting, the RHS provides combinations for different situations, including drought, part shade and shade. Start with the combination that most closely matches your site, then check the individual plants’ requirements and suitability for your location.

Once the plan is settled, make a list of the plants and cultivars you want and look for them through reputable nurseries. The RHS recommends planning well ahead of spring or autumn planting so there is time to source chosen plants. That is a reason to plan early, not a guarantee that a particular plant will be available.
