Happy Vishu! May the day bring hope, prosperity, and new beginnings. Vishu is a festival associated with Kerala’s solar new year, observed around mid-April.
What is Vishu?
Vishu is associated with the Malayalam month Medam and the beginning of a new solar cycle in Kerala. Kerala Tourism describes it as Kerala’s Solar New Year, connected with spring and the harvest season. Its Gregorian date varies with the solar calendar and generally falls around April 14–15. Kerala Tourism’s 2026–27 calendar lists Vishu on April 15, 2026; check a current local calendar or temple notice for the date in a particular year.

How is Vishu celebrated?
Vishukkani: the first sight of the morning
A central custom is Vishukkani, an auspicious display arranged for viewing first thing in the morning. Kerala Tourism describes an arrangement that may include rice, fruits, vegetables, golden cucumber, betel leaves, flowers, coins, and a mirror, placed before an image of Lord Krishna. Konna flowers are also associated with Vishu.

Customs differ between households and institutions. At Sabarimala, for example, the temple’s Vishukkani observance includes a display of grains, fruit, clothes, lamps, and coins, viewed in the early morning. Vishukkaineetam and Vishu Sadya
Vishukkaineetam is money given by elders to younger family members. Vishu Sadya is a traditional feast of Kerala dishes shared in connection with the festival. The exact customs and meal can vary from family to family.

A simple Vishu greeting
“Happy Vishu!” is a warm greeting to share with family, friends, or colleagues. Kerala Tourism’s descriptions use the names Vishukkani, Vishukkaineetam, and Vishu Sadya, but do not establish a single required Malayalam greeting formula.
