Competitive flower arranging is judged against the rules and purpose of a particular event—not one universal standard. To make a strong entry, first understand the class or category, its staging and material limits, then build a coherent design with sound mechanics that visibly answers the brief.

Start with the event’s rules, not a generic design formula

“Flower arranging competition” can mean different things. A National Garden Clubs (NGC) flower show, an AIFD student competition, and AIFD’s Professional Floral Design Evaluation (PFDE) each have their own requirements. The organizer’s current schedule or briefing determines what you may make, where it will be displayed, what supplies you may use, and how judges will assess it.

Before selecting flowers or sketching a concept, confirm the entry category, dimensions, staging, time limit, permitted tools and materials, and submission deadline. For a local show, check its schedule and the current NGC handbook; for an AIFD event, use its current event guidance. Rules can change by event and year.

How the main competition formats differ

NGC flower shows

NGC’s Design Division is a creative showcase organized around a show theme and class titles. The schedule explains what each class calls for and how the entry will be staged; possible settings include tables, pedestals, frames, and floor areas. NGC’s flower show information points to its Handbook for Flower Shows for design styles and types. Read the local schedule alongside the current handbook rather than assuming one class’s requirements apply to another.

NGC’s flower show school curriculum covers show structure—divisions, sections, classes, and subclasses—as well as design principles, scoring practice, judging procedures, and schedule writing. It can help entrants understand how a show is organized, and is also relevant to people learning to judge or organize shows.

AIFD student competitions

The Society of American Institute of Floral Designers (SAIFD) student competitions take place at AIFD’s National Symposium. A student’s chapter advisor provides the registration form, rules, category information, tool list, and symposium-registration details. AIFD’s student competition FAQ describes pressure from limited time, unfamiliar materials, tool restrictions, and size limits. It also warns that a design may be disqualified for exceeding size limits or not being on the judging table when time is called.

AIFD’s student guidance says technical evaluation considers color, depth, line, balance, focal emphasis, unity, and proportion, alongside mechanics, category interpretation, and creativity. Those are AIFD’s stated criteria for this program, not a universal score sheet for all flower shows.

AIFD’s Professional Floral Design Evaluation

AIFD says the hands-on portion requires five designs in categories announced at an orientation. Its listed criteria are line, color, balance, proportion, dominance, contrast, rhythm, unity, mechanics (professional application), and creativity. Consult AIFD’s current membership and PFDE information for current eligibility, logistics, and category details.

What judges may assess

The exact rubric depends on the event. AIFD’s published student and PFDE criteria nevertheless show the kinds of design choices a competitor may need to make intentionally. Do not treat every term below as a requirement in every contest; follow the event’s own score sheet.

  • Interpretation: The design should visibly respond to the assigned class or category. For an NGC show, use the schedule’s title, theme, and staging as the brief; for an AIFD event, use the announced category and instructions.
  • Composition: Depending on the rubric, judges may consider line, color, balance, proportion, depth, focal emphasis or dominance, contrast, rhythm, and unity. The criteria overlap in practice, but each organization’s wording matters.
  • Mechanics: Construction should be stable and finished cleanly, with supports concealed where appropriate. AIFD explicitly includes mechanics or professional application in its evaluation guidance.
  • Creativity: An original choice is strongest when it advances the category interpretation and works with the rest of the composition, rather than distracting from the brief.
  • Compliance: Size, timing, staging, and material rules are part of the task. A visually ambitious arrangement cannot compensate for a rule violation when the organizer makes compliance a condition of entry.

How to prepare for a competition

  1. Get the current event documents. For an NGC show, read the complete schedule and confirm the relevant handbook revision. For an AIFD program, obtain the current rules and category or orientation information from the organizer or, for students, the chapter advisor.
  2. Translate the brief into a design plan. Identify the category’s central idea, required staging, and any limits. Make a quick sketch or written concept that explains how the arrangement will answer the prompt.
  3. Practice the rubric’s design principles. Rehearse the elements actually named by the event: for example, line, color relationships, balance, proportion, emphasis, rhythm, depth, or unity. Use the exact score sheet or official educational material where available.
  4. Rehearse mechanics and constraints together. Build within the allowed dimensions and practice with the materials and tools the event permits. If supplies are provided or outside tools are restricted, simulate those conditions rather than relying on a preferred setup.
  5. Run a timed practice and plan the handoff. Include cleanup and transport to the judging table in your practice. AIFD’s student FAQ specifically notes the judging-table deadline and potential disqualification for late or oversized work.
  6. Review what the score means. NGC’s curriculum includes point-scoring practice; AIFD provides program-specific preparation resources. Treat feedback as a way to identify which design decision or technical skill needs work, rather than as a universal ranking of styles.

Staging Specified in the schedule; may include tables, pedestals, frames, or floor areas. Follow event instructions; confirm the judging-table deadline. Use current AIFD event instructions; detailed staging is not stated on the cited membership page.
Materials and tools Check the show schedule and applicable handbook. Chapter advisor provides the tool list and rules. AIFD describes provided supplies for the hands-on evaluation.
Judging Use the show’s schedule and current NGC guidance; NGC education includes scoring and judging procedures. AIFD names design principles, mechanics, interpretation, and creativity. AIFD lists ten criteria, including design principles, mechanics, and creativity.

Build practice around the actual score sheet

There is no single practice rubric that fits every competition. Write the event’s criteria beside your plan and check each one against the finished design: Does the arrangement answer the category? Is its focal emphasis clear? Do the proportions and line suit the staging? Are the mechanics neat? Can you complete and submit it within the stated limits?

If you are new to a show system, NGC’s flower show school curriculum offers instruction in design, scoring, and judging. For AIFD’s professional evaluation, use AIFD’s preparation resources and the named third-edition guide for Part One, while verifying current requirements with AIFD.
