Making Calculus With LEGO: A Hands-On Guide to Change and Accumulation

A baseplate and uniform bricks can make change and accumulation tangible. Build columns, compare their differences, and see how adding those changes reconstructs the original pattern.

LEGO bricks can make two core calculus ideas easier to picture: how quantities change and how small changes accumulate. Start with a baseplate and uniform bricks, build columns of different heights, then compare neighboring columns. The result is a tactile model of finite differences—not a replacement for limits, proofs, or algebra.

How can I use LEGO bricks to understand calculus?

Build a sequence of columns whose heights represent values at successive positions. Then compare each column with the one beside it. Those differences act like a discrete version of a derivative: they show how much the represented quantity changes from one position to the next.

For the opening model in Make: Calculus by Joan Horvath and Rich Cameron, the column heights are 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 bricks. Each step adds two bricks, so the differences are constant. Place those differences as a second, flat wall: it represents the same change at each step.

Materials for the opening wall

  • A baseplate
  • About 70 identical bricks; 2×2 bricks are suggested, but any uniform brick size works

This is the material list for the introductory example, not for every model in the book. The authors introduce the activity as a way to demonstrate calculus features with simple building bricks (O’Reilly’s Make: Calculus catalog; publisher preview).

Build and compare the columns

  1. Choose a consistent horizontal spacing and build columns with heights 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 bricks.
  2. For each neighboring pair, count the height added. Each increase is two bricks.
  3. Build a second row or wall showing those increases. Because every difference is equal, this wall is flat.
  4. Discuss the first wall as values and the second as changes between values. The model makes the pattern visible before introducing derivative notation.

How does the wall show accumulation and integration?

The differences can also be added back together. Starting at zero, add each two-brick increase in sequence: 2, then 4, then 6, then 8, then 10. The running total reconstructs the original column heights. This is a concrete illustration of accumulation and of the relationship between differentiation and integration: differences describe changes, while adding changes recovers totals.

  • LEONARDO DA VINCI BUILDING SET – Immerse yourself in the history of flying innovation with the LEGO Icons Leonardo da Vinci’s Flying Machine building project for adults
  • DIY CRAFT – This set includes all the pieces you need to craft a detailed LEGO interpretation of da Vinci’s visionary ornithopter, a Leonardo da Vinci minifigure holding a quill and sketch, plus a display stand
  • INNOVATIVE FEATURES – Recreate Leonardo da Vinci’s flying machine with its flappable textile wings and tail, driven by an intricate invention of string, hinges and pulleys
  • HOME OR OFFICE DÉCOR - Add a striking centerpiece to the home or office with this detailed display model depicting Leonardo da Vinci’s Flying Machine
  • GIFT IDEA FOR ADULTS – Celebrate a birthday or special occasion with this gift for history-lovers and fans of aviation and historic innovation

The wall is discrete, so this is not a general proof that differentiation and integration are inverses in every setting. It is a useful first picture of the relationship, which requires more precise definitions and conditions in formal calculus.

What do finite differences reveal about a less simple pattern?

The book also uses the square-height sequence 0, 1, 4, 9, and 16. The successive differences are 1, 3, 5, and 7; taking differences again gives a constant second difference. This brick pattern shows how comparing changes can expose structure that is less obvious in the original values.

It also introduces a useful caution: a stepped construction represents values at separate positions, while a curve is continuous. The book explicitly flags the distinction between finite differences and curves, and notes that the model’s stair-step character matters. Bricks can make a pattern tangible, but they do not erase the mathematical difference between discrete steps and continuous change.

Can LEGO explain derivatives and integrals?

LEGO can help introduce them, especially as physical analogies for discrete change and accumulation. It cannot, on its own, establish what happens between the modeled positions or replace the limit-based definitions, symbolic methods, and proofs needed for general calculus. Use the model to ask better questions—what is changing, by how much, and what happens when changes are added—then connect those questions to equations and graphs.

A separate model for the derivative of a cube’s volume

A 2013 paper presented at the IEEE Global Engineering Education Conference describes a different LEGO demonstration. It compares a cube of side length x with a larger cube of side length x + Δx. LEGO pieces represent the added volume between them, decomposed into smaller pieces. As Δx tends toward zero, the terms proportional to x2Δx motivate the derivative of x3, which is 3x2 (2013 EDUCON paper).

This is an illustration of one specific derivative, not a universal recipe for deriving calculus results. The paper describes the construction as physically validating why the result is true, while acknowledging that the example does not represent every situation.

What resource goes beyond the introductory LEGO activity?

Make: Calculus, by Joan Horvath and Rich Cameron, is a 328-page first edition published in August 2022 and labeled intermediate to advanced in O’Reilly’s catalog. It begins with brick models and broadens into topics including derivatives, integrals, instantaneous slope, tangent lines, the mean value theorem, volumes, growth and decay, periodic systems, circuits, vectors, and series. Its later material also uses 3D-printed models, OpenSCAD, and Arduino; a simple brick wall is only the starting point, not a complete kit for the book’s coverage (O’Reilly catalog and contents).

The book is a fit for readers who want to move from hands-on intuition toward a broader treatment. For a single classroom demonstration, the introductory wall is enough to explore discrete differences and running totals; formal coursework remains necessary for rigorous definitions and general methods.

What should you expect the model to teach?

  • Best for: Making change between neighboring values and accumulation of those changes visible.
  • Not a substitute for: Limits, continuous functions, algebraic derivation, or proof.
  • Materials burden: Low for the opening wall; later book activities may involve 3D printing, software, or electronics.
  • Evidence of learning gains: The 2013 paper describes engagement with a demonstration, but does not establish a causal learning gain from LEGO specifically.
