FLUX.2 is Black Forest Labs’ image-generation and editing family, with text-to-image generation and single- and multi-reference editing. The official Klein demo is the quickest way to try it: BFL says it is free and requires no signup or credit card. FLUX.2 is the latest generation in the FLUX.2 image-model lineup, but BFL has since introduced the newer FLUX 3 family.
For local use, choose a model based on hardware, workflow and license: BFL highlights Klein 4B for consumer GPUs, while Klein 9B and FLUX.2 dev have noncommercial licenses. API use is a separate route that requires a BFL account, positive credit balance and API key.
What is FLUX.2?
FLUX.2 is a family of image-generation and editing models developed by Black Forest Labs (BFL). Its listed versions support text-to-image generation and editing with single or multiple reference images. BFL’s repository lists Klein 4B and 9B distilled variants, Klein 9B KV, Klein 4B Base and 9B Base, and FLUX.2 dev.

BFL recommends distilled Klein variants for real-time or interactive workflows, Klein 4B for consumer-GPU use, Base variants or dev for fine-tuning and LoRA work, and FLUX.2 dev when quality matters more than latency. These are vendor recommendations, not independent benchmark results.

BFL announced FLUX.2 dev in November 2025 and the Klein family in January 2026. FLUX.2 remains an image-model family, but it is not BFL’s newest overall family: BFL has introduced FLUX 3, including video generation. The title’s “Midjourney rival” wording is editorial framing; the sources reviewed do not establish a current ranking against Midjourney.
Which FLUX.2 model should you use?
| Need | Starting point | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Quick interactive generation | Distilled Klein variant | BFL recommends distilled Klein models for real-time workflows. |
| Local use on a consumer GPU | Klein 4B | BFL highlights this as its consumer-GPU option; its repository says it fits in about 8 GB of VRAM. |
| Fine-tuning or LoRA work | Klein Base variant or FLUX.2 dev | BFL recommends Base variants or dev for these workflows; check compute requirements and license. |
| Quality prioritized over latency | FLUX.2 dev | BFL recommends dev for this tradeoff; it is a 32B-parameter model and uses a noncommercial license. |
| Try it without installing or signing up | Official Klein demo | BFL says it is free and requires no signup or credit card. |
| API integration | BFL API | Requires a BFL account, positive credit balance and API key; check current pricing and terms. |
BFL’s Klein product page lists estimated VRAM figures of 8.4 GB for Klein 4B, 9.2 GB for Klein 4B Base, 19.6 GB for Klein 9B and 21.7 GB for Klein 9B Base. These are BFL-published estimates; actual requirements vary with hardware and configuration.

How can I try FLUX.2?
Try the official Klein demo
For a first look, use BFL’s official Klein demo. BFL says the demo is free and requires neither signup nor a credit card. This browser option does not require you to install model files or provide a local GPU.
- Open the official Klein demo.
- Enter a prompt and try an image-generation request.
- If exploring editing, provide a reference image and describe what should change or remain unchanged.
- Save or note the model and workflow if you need to reproduce the result.
Use the BFL API
The API is for programmatic access and is separate from the no-signup demo. BFL’s quickstart says you need an account, a positive credit balance and an API key. It demonstrates submitting an image-generation request and polling for the result. Check the current pricing and API terms before use; API usage is not the free-demo route.

- Add credits and create an API key as instructed in the current quickstart.
- Follow the quickstart to submit a request and retrieve its result.
- Review the current API terms and licensing information, especially for commercial projects.
Run a model locally
Local inference gives you control over the environment and can keep prompts and source images on your own machine, but requires suitable compute and attention to each model’s license. BFL’s official inference repository documents local installation and an interactive CLI.
- Choose a specific FLUX.2 model and review its official model and license information.
- Check the model’s hardware requirements against your system.
- Follow the installation instructions in BFL’s official inference repository.
- Run a small test first, then adapt the documented workflow to your generation or editing task.
BFL names RTX 3090- and RTX 4070-class GPUs as consumer examples for Klein 4B. A dedicated GPU is unnecessary for the browser demo. Confirm current hardware and configuration requirements before buying or installing anything.

Is FLUX.2 open-source, and can you use it commercially?
Check the exact model and access route rather than treating FLUX.2 as having one license. BFL lists Klein 4B under Apache 2.0 and as free for commercial use. Klein 9B and FLUX.2 dev use the FLUX Non-Commercial license; commercial use requires a commercial license. BFL’s licensing overview says its API usage includes full commercial rights without a separate license. Verify the current terms and your use case before publication or deployment.

- Keep the relevant license and terms with your project records.
- Consider copyright, trademarks, privacy, publicity rights, real-person likenesses and client-contract requirements separately from model licensing.
FLUX.2 and Midjourney: what is the difference?
The supplied title frames FLUX as a Midjourney rival, but the sources reviewed do not support a comparative ranking or performance claim. For this how-to, the useful choice is between access routes: FLUX.2 models can be tried in BFL’s browser demo, accessed through its API or run locally with suitable compute.
