A Flying Crank Ghost uses a fixed head, two hands pulled by opposite ends of a rotating crank, and lightweight gauzy fabric that trails their movement. The motor turns the crank; it does not lift the ghost directly. That simple motion creates the floating, swimming effect, but the right motor, frame, and dimensions depend on the specific design and load.
How a Flying Crank Ghost works
Hang the head from a fixed overhead line. Attach a line to each hand and route the two lines to opposite throws on a rotating crank. As the crank turns, one hand rises while the other falls. The cloth draped over the head and hands lags slightly behind that motion, making the figure appear to float.
The mechanism is commonly credited to special-effects enthusiast Doug Ferguson; Spookyblue documents how the design spread among Halloween hobbyists and was adapted into different builds. Spookyblue’s project history describes one early frame that proved too flexible for that particular tall build—a reminder that frame rigidity depends on dimensions, bracing, material, and load, not a blanket rule against any one material. Choose a build approach
There is no single authoritative parts list or set of dimensions. Plans differ in frame, drive, line routing, and electrical approach; use one design as a coherent starting point rather than combining its measurements with another plan without checking how the mechanism will behave.

The retailer listings establish that mechanisms and kits are marketed; they do not establish that a purchased option is best for a particular installation.
Parts and sizing considerations
Motor and crank
Use a slow motor suited to the actual ghost and mechanism. Make: gives 4–7 rpm as an example, while Hallowmix describes a rotisserie motor or DC gear motor. Neither choice is a universal requirement. The motor must have enough torque for the moving load and friction; crank length also affects the load the drive must move. Keep the ghost light and choose the motor, crank, and support frame as a matched system.

In Hallowmix’s example, 4-inch crank arms move each hand about 8 inches from its lowest to highest point. Its guide positions the hands from below shoulder level to around head height. Those are choices for that build, not dimensions every ghost needs.
Frame, lines, and body
- Frame and mount: Provide a stable overhead support that resists flexing as the crank turns. A frame that worked at one size or load may not suit another.
- Moving lines: Use strong, low-stretch cord or fishing line, routed so it cannot wrap around the crank or snag the cloth. Hallowmix names 20 lb monofilament for its example; that is not a universal load rating.
- Head and hands: Lightweight foam or plastic forms reduce the load on the drive. The appropriate shape and attachment method depend on the selected plan.
- Fabric: White cotton cheesecloth or similar lightweight gauzy fabric is commonly used. Keep fabric clear of the moving rod and crank.
Build and test the motion
- Choose one plan and its geometry. Decide where the ghost will hang, how the frame will be supported, and whether the crank will be above reach or guarded. Follow one plan’s motor, frame, and line arrangement unless you have recalculated the design for changes.
- Mount the motor and crank securely. In the Hallowmix arrangement, the shaft is horizontal, so the arms rotate in a vertical circle. Ensure the mount remains stable and the moving parts cannot be reached by passersby.
- Hang the head and route the hand lines. Keep the head fixed and connect the hands to opposite crank throws, adjusting the line lengths so the hands travel through the intended range without striking the frame.
- Add the fabric without letting it reach the drive. Drape the gauzy material over the head and hands, then trim or reposition anything that could touch the rod, crank, or other moving parts.
- Run several complete turns and watch closely. Check for lines catching, fabric wrapping around the rod, excessive frame flex, or hands hitting the structure. Unplug the motor before changing a line, touching the crank, or adjusting the cloth.
Electrical and fire safety
Outdoor power
For outdoor electrically powered decorations, NFPA’s 2024 electrical-safety guidance says to use GFCI protection and test it before each use; use an outdoor-rated extension cord. Damp or wet outdoor locations require weather-resistant GFCI receptacles and weatherproof covers under the National Electrical Code. See NFPA’s Halloween electrical-safety guidance.

Make:’s project includes mains-voltage wiring and warns that electricity can kill. Treat that wiring as a serious electrical project, not a casual part of a prop build; do not work on an energized mechanism.
Moving parts and fire hazards
- Keep the motor, crank, and moving lines above reach or behind a guard so fingers, clothing, and passersby cannot get caught.
- Unplug before adjusting the mechanism or clearing a snag.
- Keep gauzy fabric and other decorations away from open flames and heat sources such as light bulbs and heaters; keep exits clear.
NFPA’s 2024 Halloween safety sheet reports that decorations are the first items to ignite in more than 800 reported home fires each year, and nearly one-third of those fires were started by a candle. Those figures concern home fires involving decorations generally, not Flying Crank Ghosts specifically. NFPA’s Halloween safety sheet gives the guidance.

- Do Not use sticky automotive assembly lube, always use the oil you plan to run in the engine as assembly lube for all internal parts.
- Make sure the bearing and rod serrations are clean. Install the bearings by lining up the tangs on the bearing with the cut outs on the rod.
