Free Flash website templates with FLA source files are legacy digital artifacts, useful for preservation, study, recovering design ideas, or migration—not ready-to-deploy modern websites. The FLA is the editable project file; the SWF is compiled output. Before using any download, check that the exact archive includes the source, its dependencies, and a license.
Adobe ended Flash Player support on December 31, 2020, and Flash content was blocked from running in Flash Player beginning January 12, 2021. Do not install an unofficial player; preserve the archive and rebuild any useful design elements with supported web technology.
What “with FLA source files” really means
FLA and SWF are different file types. The FLA is the editable project; the SWF is a compiled Flash output commonly derived from a FLA. A download containing only a SWF does not establish that editable source is included.

| File | What it means | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| .FLA | The editable Flash project file. | Confirm that the exact archive contains it. |
| .SWF | Compiled Flash output. | Do not treat it as equivalent to the editable source. |
| Linked files | Media, assets, configuration, or documentation the project may depend on. | Check the archive listing for the files the project references. |
The Library of Congress describes SWF as a legacy format and notes that SWF files are typically derived from FLA projects. The National Archives and Records Administration lists FLA project and SWF movie formats separately in its software and code format records.
Where free FLA template packages are found
Older directories, software archives, and design roundups may point to Flash template packages, but this research did not verify any particular archive, download, package contents, or license. Treat listings as leads, not proof that a file is available, complete, safe, or legally reusable.
Check the package itself. Confirm whether it contains an FLA, linked media or other assets, configuration files, documentation, and software-version notes. Contents vary, so do not infer completeness from a page title, description, or thumbnail.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required

- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Record provenance. Save the archive filename, source page, date obtained, stated software version, and stated license.
- Inspect the archive listing. Look for an
.flafile and any linked assets, configuration files, or documentation. A SWF alone is not editable source. - Preserve an untouched copy. Assess files using a working copy. If the source is uncertain, use an appropriately isolated workflow.
- Read the package’s license. “Free download” does not establish permission to modify, redistribute, or use commercially. Check the rights for the project and its assets.
- Do not install an unofficial Flash Player. Adobe says Flash Player no longer receives security updates and warns that unauthorized third-party downloads can be sources of malware and viruses.
- Optionally record a checksum. A checksum can help you identify whether a preserved archive has changed; it does not prove that the file is safe.
Flash Player is obsolete
Adobe ended Flash Player support on December 31, 2020. Flash content was blocked from running in Flash Player beginning January 12, 2021. A legacy template should not be treated as a plug-and-play choice for a current public website.
Do not install an unofficial “old Flash Player” or similar download to preview a template. Adobe warns that unauthorized third-party Flash Player downloads can be sources of malware and viruses. Preserve and inspect files without relying on an unofficial player.
Can an old FLA be opened?
Whether a particular old FLA can be opened or used depends on the file and its dependencies. Check the archive for software-version notes, linked media, configuration files, and documentation. This research did not establish compatibility for any specific template.
Preserve the original and assess a copy. If your goal is a current public site, treat the FLA as reference material rather than assuming it can be converted directly into a working modern website.

A practical preservation and migration workflow
1. Preserve first
Keep an untouched copy of the original archive and record its filename, source page, date obtained, stated software version, and license. If you create a checksum, store it with your provenance notes.
2. Inspect the contents
Check the archive listing for the FLA and any linked media, assets, configuration files, or documentation. Do not assume a page thumbnail or description proves that the package is complete.
3. Assess a working copy
Use a copy rather than modifying the preserved original. If the archive’s provenance is uncertain, use an appropriately isolated workflow and do not install an unofficial Flash Player.
4. Check reuse rights
Read the license attached to the exact package and check the rights for its assets. If the license or asset rights are unclear, do not assume that you may publish or commercially reuse them.

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required

- The available storage capacity may vary.
5. Rebuild for public use
If recovering a design for a live site, treat the FLA as a reference. Rebuild the relevant layout, artwork, text, or animation with supported web technology. The appropriate approach depends on which assets and behavior the archive contains.
6. Test the replacement
Test the rebuilt site as a current website, including its accessibility, responsive behavior, and assets. Do not require visitors to use a browser plugin or lower security settings.
Which approach fits your goal?
| Your goal | Appropriate treatment | Main checks |
|---|---|---|
| Preserve, study, or recover an old project | Retain the archive and provenance; inspect a copy. | Completeness, provenance, version notes, dependencies, and license. |
| Publish a current site based on an old design | Rebuild relevant elements with supported web technology. | Recoverable assets and behavior, accessibility, responsive behavior, and reuse rights. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling an SWF an FLA template. A SWF is compiled output, not the editable project.
- Assuming a listing proves a package is complete. Inspect the exact archive and its dependencies.
- Assuming “free” means unrestricted. Read the package license and check asset rights.
- Installing an unofficial player. Adobe warns about unauthorized third-party downloads and no longer provides Flash Player security updates.
- Modifying the only copy. Preserve the original and work from a copy.
- Expecting a ready-to-deploy modern site. Flash is obsolete; rebuild useful design elements for current web use.
FAQ
Does this template include the FLA source file?
Check the exact archive listing for an .fla file. A title, screenshot, or SWF file alone does not establish that editable source is included.
Is an SWF file the same as an FLA file?
No. The FLA is the editable project file; the SWF is compiled output commonly derived from a FLA.

How can I safely open an old Flash template?
Preserve the original archive, inspect a working copy, and use an appropriately isolated workflow if the source is uncertain. Do not install an unofficial Flash Player.
Can I use a free FLA template for a commercial website?
Only if the license for that exact package and the rights for its assets allow it. Free download access does not by itself establish permission for commercial use.
Will a Flash website template work in modern browsers?
Do not expect a legacy Flash template to work as a ready-to-deploy modern website. Flash Player support ended, and Flash content was blocked from running in it beginning January 12, 2021.
What should I do if a download contains only an SWF?
Treat it as compiled output, not editable source. If you want to use the design on a current site, rebuild the relevant elements with supported web technology.
The Bottom Line
Free Flash templates with FLA source files can be useful for preservation, study, recovering design ideas, or migration. Check the exact archive for its FLA, dependencies, documentation, and license; preserve the original and inspect a copy. Do not install an unofficial Flash Player or deploy Flash output unchanged.
