These are genuinely free mini-quilt patterns from their original designers, fabric companies, and publishers—not a padded gallery of paid patterns, isolated quilt blocks, or unexplained image reposts. You will find compact wall quilts, tabletop projects, hand-sewn designs, seasonal quilts, and a few larger projects that their creators also call mini quilts.

There is no universal size limit for a mini quilt. A common convention places many miniatures around 12 to 24 inches, but a miniature quilt is also judged by whether it preserves the look and proportions of a larger quilt. This guide therefore gives you the finished dimensions, technique, materials, intended use, and access requirements for every pattern so you can choose before cutting fabric. The source pages and links were checked on August 10, 2026; availability can change if a designer moves a page or adds an email or checkout requirement.
Quick picks: start with the pattern that matches your project
Skill labels below are editorial guidance based on the documented techniques, number of small pieces, and construction method. A small quilt is not automatically an easy quilt: tiny units make cutting and pressing errors more visible.

What counts as a mini quilt?
Mini quilt is a flexible practical term for a small quilted project, usually intended for a wall, table, shelf, swap, gift, or other display rather than a bed. Many quilters use the term for pieces roughly 12 to 24 inches, but that is a convention rather than a rule. The National Quilters Circle discusses the commonly used 18- to 24-inch range while also emphasizing the miniature character of the design.
Miniature quilt can mean something more specific: a scaled-down quilt whose block proportions and overall appearance resemble a full-size quilt. Organizations and shows may apply their own size, scale, or hanging rules. The Quilters’ Guild and the PBS quilting glossary both describe miniature quilts in terms of scale and resemblance, not just a measurement.

I have kept those projects in a separate section below rather than implying that every 30-inch runner is a conventional wall miniature.
Free mini-quilt patterns by technique
Traditional piecing and half-square triangles
These are the most approachable starting points if you already know how to sew a quarter-inch seam and press accurately. Half-square triangles, or HSTs, are especially useful because they make stars, hearts, pinwheels, and diagonal designs without specialty tools.
Friendship Mini
Finished size: approximately 8 inches square. Construction: 16 HSTs and 9 squares. Best for: a first small quilt or a quick scrap project. SewCanShe currently lists it in its free mini-quilt roundup. Its uncomplicated unit structure makes it a better starting point than a pattern that is small but filled with one-inch pieces.
HST Heart Mini Quilt
Finished size: 20 inches in the mini version. Construction: 32 HSTs plus strips, using 2-inch finished HSTs in the documented layout. The 10 × 10 layout is scalable; the source gives examples for a 20-inch mini, a 40-inch baby quilt, and larger versions. Choose this one when you want a heart, need to use ordinary scraps, or may later want to enlarge the same design.
Criss Cross
Finished size: 12½ inches square. Construction: HSTs, QSTs, and 16 blocks. The material list includes 5-inch squares, a fat eighth for background, and 14-inch backing and batting. It is a useful compact project for practicing triangle units, but QSTs and the small final size reward careful trimming.
9 On Point Mini Quilt
Finished size: 12 inches square. Construction: tiny nine-patch piecing. The Moda pattern uses one Moda Candy pack, jelly-roll strips, or scraps and includes very small 1 3/16-inch cuts. This is an excellent miniature-piecing exercise, but not necessarily the easiest first quilt: small cuts need accurate rotary work and consistent seam allowances.
Barn Charm Mini Quilts
Finished sizes: 14 inches, 14 inches, and 14½ inches. Construction: HSTs and traditional blocks. The free Moda project makes a coordinated trio using one charm pack, solids, and yardage. It is a good choice when a single finished mini feels too small or when you want several related gifts or display pieces.
A Brilliant Cut
Finished size: 13½ × 16½ inches. Construction: modern piecing, with Bella Solids shown in the sample. Fat Quarter Shop lists a free six-page PDF at $0.00. The compact rectangle works well as wall décor, and the strong geometry makes fabric value and contrast more important than having a large assortment of prints.

Finished size: 12¾ × 15½ inches. Construction: a panel combined with mini charm squares. This is a fast, graphic option if you already have—or can substitute for—the specific mini panel and mini charm pack assumed by the free Moda PDF. It is less suitable for a purely scrap-only project because the panel is a structural part of the design.
Scrap-friendly and precut projects
Scrap-friendly does not mean that no yardage is needed. Most small quilts still require a background, backing, batting, binding, or fusible web. Check the complete material list before deciding that a project can be made entirely from leftovers.
Heart’s Peak
Finished size: 20 inches square. Construction: patchwork heart. The design is suitable for scraps, fat sixteenths, and layer-cake leftovers. The pattern is free, but access is not an instant download: add it to the cart and complete checkout. Robin Pickens requests credit and asks makers not to repost the full pattern, so link readers to the designer’s listing rather than copying the PDF.
Dottie
Finished size: 24 × 25 inches. Construction: 30 mini charm squares, sashing, and a conventional quilt finish. The direct Bunny Hill PDF calls for 2½-inch squares, background fabric, binding, backing, and batting. It is a straightforward way to use a mini charm pack, though the finished piece sits at the upper edge of what many readers expect from a mini quilt.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHalloween Candy Stars
Finished size: 18 inches square. Construction: HST star blocks. The Moda instructions use a mini charm pack along with background fabric, sashing, borders, batting, backing, and binding. It is a clearly seasonal choice for a wall, shelf, or small table display.
A Bit of History
Finished size: 15½ × 21 inches. Construction: 30 miniature blocks and flying geese. The finished blocks measure 3 inches, and the pattern includes numerous 1¼-inch pieces. It is a strong scrap and reproduction-fabric project for confident quilters, but the tiny components make it a poor match for someone seeking a quick beginner quilt.
Foundation paper piecing
Foundation paper piecing, or FPP, is useful when a design contains sharp points, narrow sections, lettering, or irregular shapes. You sew fabric to a printed foundation, then trim each section along the marked line. It can produce excellent accuracy at miniature scale, but it has a different workflow from ordinary patchwork.
Peppermint Mini Quilt
Finished size: 21 inches square. Construction: foundation paper piecing and HSTs. The free download includes printable FPP templates and instructions. It is a reasonable first FPP mini for a confident beginner, provided you understand that the paper foundations, not just the fabric pieces, are part of the project.
Mini-Quilt Templates in a Jiffy
Finished size: not stated in the supplied article summary. Construction: a four-pattern PDF focused on foundation piecing. Threads published the material in connection with a 2002 issue, but the free resource remains available from the publisher. Treat it as an archive resource: the technique is still relevant even though fabric examples and references may be dated.
Cricut Mini Quilt
Finished size: confirm in the printable pattern. Construction: the project includes a hand-cut printable pattern and Cricut-compatible digital files. This is the most relevant choice here for readers who want machine-assisted fabric cutting. A cutting machine can improve repeatability, but it does not replace checking the final dimensions, seam allowance, or fabric orientation.
English paper piecing and other hand-sewn designs
English paper piecing, or EPP, uses paper shapes to control the finished units while the fabric is basted and joined by hand. It is portable and well suited to scraps, but a small finished quilt can still require substantial hand sewing and paper removal.
Flora
Finished size: confirm on the pattern PDF. Construction: English paper piecing with 1-inch hexagons and hand quilting. The free PDF includes printable hexagon papers. Print the papers at exactly 100 percent; enlarging or reducing them changes the finished units and can make the pattern pieces incompatible.

Finished size: confirm from the downloadable materials. Construction: EPP using scraps. Tales of Cloth describes it as a free, beginner-friendly EPP mini quilt, making it a good option for someone who wants to learn hand piecing without committing to a bed-sized project. Because the size was not available in the supplied verification, check the pattern materials before choosing a frame or hanging hardware.
Appliqué, Dresden, and decorative construction
Appliqué adds shapes on top of a background rather than building the entire image from joined pieces. Read the finishing instructions carefully: fusible web, raw edges, blanket stitch, embroidery, and thread painting each produce a different look and durability.
Square Dance Daisy
Finished size: 8½ × 10½ inches. Construction: Dresden points, patchwork, appliqué, and thread painting. The article includes free instructions and templates. Its very small format makes it an attractive decorative wall quilt, but the combination of techniques gives it more than one learning curve.
Happy Turkey Table Runner
Finished size: approximately 31½ × 16 inches. Construction: Dresden blades and raw-edge appliqué using fusible web. The designer calls it a table runner or mini quilt. Include it if your goal is seasonal tabletop décor, but do not present its dimensions as typical of a small wall mini. The web instructions are free; an optional paid or optimized PDF may also be offered.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Gnome Forest
Finished size: approximately 33 inches. Construction: four 12-inch blocks with sashing and a border. The source calls it a mini quilt, but its finished size is larger than the 18- to 24-inch range many quilters use. It is better classified as a larger small quilt or seasonal wall quilt. Free web instructions are available, with an optional paid or optimized PDF distinction to check on the source page.
Tiny traditional blocks and tabletop minis
These designs are useful when you want miniature traditional piecing, but several come from collections categorized as table runners or table toppers. Their intended use matters as much as their measurements.
Time and Again Mini Quilt
Finished size: 16¾ inches square. Construction: restrained two-color piecing with 1⅜-inch squares. It is compact and graphic, but the small cuts mean that its size should not be mistaken for beginner-level simplicity.
Summer Refreshers
Finished size: verify on the pattern page. Classification: tabletop mini or table-topper project. AllPeopleQuilt places it in its mini-quilt/table-runner collection, so choose it for practical seasonal tabletop décor rather than assuming it is a conventional wall quilt.

Mini Spinner
Finished size: verify on the pattern page. Construction: compact spinning-triangle design. It is part of AllPeopleQuilt’s small-project collection and is a useful choice for a reader looking specifically for traditional tabletop piecing.
Tiny Dishes
Finished size: verify on the pattern page. Construction: miniature Broken Dishes blocks inside an asymmetrical frame. Classify it as a tabletop mini because that is how the collection presents it. The small triangle units call for accurate cutting and pressing.
Walk in the Woods
Finished size: verify on the pattern page. Construction: star blocks in a tabletop design. It belongs in the collection for readers who want a compact traditional-style project, while the final dimensions and display format should be confirmed before cutting.
Little Blue Triangle-Squares
Finished size: verify on the pattern page. Construction: a center containing 64 small triangle-squares. This is a traditional tabletop project for quilters who enjoy repetitive small units and controlled color placement.

VOTE
Finished size: 15 inches square. Construction: lettered piecing adapted from alphabet blocks. Carolyn Friedlander describes it as a free mini-quilt pattern and it is a strong option for a modern statement piece. The source page returned a 403 error during the supplied verification, so confirm that the instructions or download still works before publication or before promising readers immediate access.
Saguaro at Sunrise
Finished size: 12 inches square. Access: the free pattern is delivered after newsletter signup. It includes a hanging sleeve, which makes the intended wall display especially clear. Choose this one when you are comfortable exchanging an email address for the download and want a finished piece with hanging instructions already considered.
Choose a pattern by fabric you already have
| Fabric or supply on hand | Good matches | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| General scraps | HST Heart, Flora, Glass Beads, Friendship Mini, Criss Cross | Expect to supply background, backing, batting, and binding unless the pattern says otherwise. |
| Fat eighths or fat sixteenths | A Bit of History; Heart’s Peak | A Bit of History has very small 1¼-inch pieces; Heart’s Peak is free through checkout. |
| Mini charm squares | Dottie, Sew Inspirational, Halloween Candy Stars | A mini charm is generally 2½ inches square, but follow each pattern’s stated cuts. Sew Inspirational additionally assumes a specific mini panel. |
| Charm squares | 9 On Point; Barn Charm Mini Quilts | Charm squares are generally 5 inches, unlike mini charms. 9 On Point also accepts jelly-roll strips or scraps, while Barn Charm uses one charm pack plus solids and yardage. |
| Hand-sewing supplies | Flora; Glass Beads | EPP is portable but hand-intensive. Flora specifically uses 1-inch hexagons. |
The fabric collection named in a manufacturer’s sample is not always necessary. Substitute comparable yardage or scraps when the pattern’s cutting requirements allow it, and do not assume that a named collection is still in production.

For a first project
- Start with Friendship Mini or HST Heart if you want basic piecing and a forgiving visual structure.
- Move to Criss Cross when you want to practice both HSTs and QSTs in a 12½-inch project.
- Try 9 On Point only if you are comfortable with tiny cuts and accurate seam allowances.
The HST Heart is particularly useful because the same basic layout can become a 20-inch mini, a 40-inch baby quilt, or a larger quilt. That lets you test a design at small scale without abandoning it if you later want a bigger version.
For a new technique
- FPP: Peppermint is the clearest featured starting point, while the Threads archive offers four additional foundation-pieced templates.
- EPP: Glass Beads is described by its designer as beginner-friendly; Flora adds 1-inch hexagons and hand quilting.
- Appliqué: Square Dance Daisy combines Dresden points, appliqué, and thread painting. Happy Turkey uses Dresden blades and raw-edge appliqué with fusible web.
- Tiny traditional piecing: Time and Again, A Bit of History, Tiny Dishes, and Little Blue Triangle-Squares are better choices once you are comfortable trimming small units.

Access labels: what free actually means here
Free pattern pages use several different access models. Before downloading, identify which one applies:
- Free web instructions: the complete tutorial is available on the source page. This is different from a free printable PDF.
- Free PDF: the downloadable file itself is available without a purchase, where that status has been verified. Examples include the Sew Inspirational PDF, Dottie PDF, and the Peppermint download.
- Free at checkout: Heart’s Peak costs nothing but must be added to a cart and checked out through the designer’s store.
- Newsletter signup: Saguaro at Sunrise is delivered after signing up for the Quilted Rhino newsletter.
- Free instructions with optional paid PDF: some creators publish the instructions on the web while charging for a cleaner, ad-free, or optimized printable version. Read the page details instead of assuming the PDF is free.
- Availability to recheck: VOTE was described as free, but its page returned a 403 during verification. A link should not be treated as confirmed until it opens for readers.
The current SewCanShe roundup is titled 30+ Free Mini Quilt Patterns and was updated August 20, 2025. An older search result showed a different headline count, which is why headline numbers should not be treated as a permanent inventory. The AllPeopleQuilt collection likewise contains 44 projects but mixes wall minis with tabletop projects and runners.
Before you print or cut
- Save the original source page. Designers may update a PDF, change a download button, or move a pattern.
- Read the complete supply list. Fabric is only part of the requirement. You may also need batting, backing, binding, thread, fusible web, paper foundations, EPP papers, or a panel.
- Check the finished dimensions. A pattern called a mini may be 31½ inches long or 33 inches wide. Decide whether that fits your intended use before cutting.
- Print at the specified scale. Turn off browser options such as Fit to page when the pattern requires 100 percent. Print a test page and measure its test square.
- Confirm the seam allowance. Do not assume every designer uses the same allowance, particularly when adapting a block or mixing pattern sources.
- Check directional templates. FPP foundations often produce a mirror image. Lettering and directional motifs may reverse unless the pattern accounts for that effect.
- Cut one test unit first. This is especially worthwhile for 1¼-inch and 1⅜-inch pieces, 1-inch hexagons, QSTs, and any template with a curve or point.
For Flora, the source specifically says to print the included 1-inch hexagon papers at 100 percent. For FPP, read the foundation instructions before cutting: the fabric must cover the next section and the completed unit after trimming, not merely the visible portion of the printed shape.

Construction notes for mini quilts
Foundation paper piecing without the usual mistakes
In FPP, fabric is sewn to a printed paper foundation in numbered sections. The finished fabric unit is a mirror image of the foundation. The AllPeopleQuilt foundation-piecing guide recommends a very short stitch length of approximately 12 to 16 stitches per inch and generally leaves the paper in place until the unit or block is complete.
- Cut the first fabric piece large enough to cover its section with a seam allowance.
- Place the fabric on the correct side and in the correct orientation before sewing.
- Use a short stitch length so the paper perforates and can be removed later.
- Press after each seam, then trim the unit on the outer foundation line.
- Do not remove paper too early; it helps stabilize the unit while adjoining sections are sewn.
- Remember the mirror-image effect when using lettering or directional fabric.
Common failures include a fabric piece that does not cover the next section, a reversed motif, paper that tears because the stitch is too large, and seams that drift because the unit was not trimmed between sections.
English paper piecing
EPP depends on accurately cut paper shapes, folded seam allowances, and consistent basting. It is a good portable method for Flora and Glass Beads, but the small finished size does not make the handwork instant. Allow time for basting, joining, pressing, quilting, and removing papers.
Appliqué and Dresden work
Identify the edge treatment before choosing a project. Fusible-web appliqué stabilizes the shape and can be secured with machine stitching, blanket stitch, or another finish. Raw-edge appliqué intentionally leaves the fabric edge exposed, as in Happy Turkey. Dresden blades also require accurate wedges and careful pressing so the completed circle or fan lies flat.
Quilting the finished top
Once the top is complete, the usual sequence is to make a quilt sandwich of top, batting, and backing, quilt the layers, trim the edges, and bind or otherwise finish them. The quilting density should secure the layers without distorting a tiny top.
- Straight-line or walking-foot quilting: predictable and approachable for a first machine-quilted mini.
- Free-motion quilting: useful practice, although small pieces make tension and stitch-length problems easy to see.
- Hand quilting: particularly appropriate for EPP, appliqué, and decorative wall pieces.
- Minimal quilting: can suit a wall piece, but the batting and backing still need to be secured adequately according to the batting and pattern instructions.
Do not assume that every mini can be finished in an afternoon. The patchwork may be compact while appliqué, paper removal, hand quilting, binding, and precise trimming take considerably longer.
How to finish and hang a mini quilt
For a wall mini, decide on the hanging method before quilting. A sleeve distributes the weight and hides the hanging rod. For a home display, small corner pockets, tabs, a dowel, or a narrow hanging strip may be simpler.
For show entries, follow the event’s rules. The American Quilter’s Society sleeve instructions specify an 8½-inch-wide sleeve cut to the exact width of the quilt, positioned approximately ½ to ¾ inch below the top edge on the back. The sleeve needs enough ease for the rod or hanging device. The AllPeopleQuilt hanging guide also explains a full sleeve and two-corner-pocket method.
Rank #4
For a table topper or mug rug, prioritize a flat, stable finish and washable materials over a sleeve. A larger project such as Happy Turkey or Gnome Forest may be more useful on a table or as seasonal wall décor than as a miniature quilt in the strict sense.
Common problems with free mini-quilt patterns
The pattern is free, but the PDF is not
If the complete instructions are readable on the web page and only the print-friendly file costs money, it is fair to call the pattern free web instructions—not a free PDF. Check whether measurements, cutting instructions, assembly diagrams, and finishing steps are all present before printing.
The project is only a quilt block
A 6-, 9-, or 12-inch block is not automatically a finished mini quilt. It becomes one only after you add batting and backing, quilt the layers, and finish the edges. Label block-only resources as blocks that can be made into minis unless the source includes those finishing instructions.
The project is too large for your definition of mini
Preserve the designer’s terminology but show the dimensions. Gnome Forest is approximately 33 inches and Happy Turkey is approximately 31½ × 16 inches. Those can be excellent small or seasonal quilts, but readers seeking an 8- to 24-inch wall quilt should know the difference before they start.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The named fabric collection is unavailable
Manufacturer patterns often show a particular collection. Substitute fabrics by matching the required amount, value, and contrast where possible. Do not imply that a named collection remains available unless its current stock has been checked.
The pattern page disappears or becomes gated
Keep the original designer’s page bookmarked and check the access label. Do not download or redistribute copied PDFs from unofficial sites. Linking to the original source respects the designer’s copyright and gives readers the current instructions if the pattern is revised.
A practical decision checklist
- What is the actual finished size?
- Will the quilt hang on a wall, sit on a table, cover a mug-rug space, or become a gift?
- Do you want machine piecing, HSTs, QSTs, FPP, EPP, Dresden work, appliqué, or a panel-based project?
- Do you have scraps, mini charms, 5-inch charm squares, a fat eighth, a fat sixteenth, or a specific panel?
- Does the pattern require background, backing, batting, binding, fusible web, paper, or a specialty ruler?
- Are the instructions on the page, in a free PDF, available after checkout, or behind a newsletter signup?
- Does the pattern list a test square or require printing at 100 percent?
- Will the finished piece need a sleeve, corner pockets, tabs, or a show-specific hanging treatment?
- Have you checked the designer’s terms if you plan to sell finished items made from the pattern?
For commercial use, do not assume that every free pattern has the same terms. Check the individual designer’s permission, attribution, and distribution language. Robin Pickens’ Heart’s Peak listing, for example, explicitly requests credit and asks readers not to repost the full pattern.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size is a mini quilt?
There is no universal cutoff. Many quilters use the term for pieces around 12 to 24 inches, while miniature-quilt groups may focus on whether the design is a scaled reproduction of a full-size quilt. A larger project can still be called a mini by its designer, so check the finished dimensions and intended use.
Are mini quilts good for beginners?
They can be. Friendship Mini and HST Heart are sensible first choices because their construction is based on familiar squares and HSTs. However, small projects can magnify cutting and pressing errors, and patterns using tiny nine-patches, FPP, EPP, or detailed appliqué may be more demanding than a larger beginner quilt.
Can I make a mini quilt from scraps?
Yes. HST Heart, Friendship Mini, Criss Cross, Flora, Glass Beads, A Bit of History, and Heart’s Peak are useful scrap-oriented choices. You may still need separate fabric for the background, backing, binding, or batting, so read the material list rather than assuming the entire project is scrap-only.
Which free mini-quilt pattern is easiest?
Friendship Mini is the simplest featured starting point, followed by HST Heart. Criss Cross is a good next step if you want to practice both HSTs and QSTs. Small size alone is not an indication of difficulty; 9 On Point and A Bit of History use very small pieces.
Do mini quilts need batting?
A conventionally quilted mini uses a layer of batting between the top and backing, just like a larger quilt. Follow the individual pattern if it specifies a particular batting, fusible fleece, or alternative finish. Decorative wall pieces may use a lighter material, while table projects need a stable finish suited to their use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan a quilt block become a mini quilt?
Yes, but the block needs to be turned into a finished quilt: add batting and backing, quilt the layers, trim the edges, and bind or otherwise finish them. A block-only tutorial should be labeled as a block that can become a mini rather than as a complete mini-quilt pattern.
How do I print a free quilt pattern at the correct size?
Use the pattern’s specified scale, usually 100 percent or actual size, and turn off browser settings such as Fit to page. Print the test page first and measure its test square. Flora specifically requires its 1-inch hexagon papers to be printed at 100 percent. For FPP, also check whether the foundation is intended to be mirrored.
Do I need a hanging sleeve?
Not always. A sleeve is the most stable concealed option for a wall quilt and may be required by a show. Very small pieces can use corner pockets, tabs, or a dowel. For show entries, use the event’s specifications rather than assuming a home-display method will qualify.
Are all free mini-quilt patterns available as PDFs?
No. Some are complete web tutorials, some have free downloadable PDFs, some are free only after checkout, and some require a newsletter signup. A designer may also offer free web instructions with an optional paid print-friendly PDF. The access label should be checked before you begin.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Do not assume a universal answer. Read the individual designer’s terms for finished-item sales, attribution, and pattern redistribution. Selling the finished quilt and sharing or selling copies of the pattern are separate issues; never repost a designer’s complete instructions or PDF without permission.
The Bottom Line
For the safest first choice, begin with Friendship Mini or the scalable HST Heart. Choose Peppermint for FPP, Flora or Glass Beads for hand sewing, and Dottie for mini charms. Before cutting, confirm the size, materials, print scale, and access conditions on the original source page.
