To tie a classic self-tie bow tie, start with one end slightly longer, make a loose neck knot, form the first folded wing, drape the longer end over it, push a second folded wing through the hidden opening, and tighten the folded wings like shoelaces.
This guide is for a self-tie, sometimes called a tie-it-yourself or freestyle bow tie. A pre-tied bow tie already has its bow formed, while a clip-on attaches directly to the shirt collar; neither uses the eight steps below.

- Confirm that it is a self-tie. A self-tie has two long fabric ends and an adjustable neckband. If the bow is already formed or the tie has a small clip, use its fastening mechanism rather than trying to tie it.
- Prepare the shirt. Button the shirt, turn the collar up, and place the bow tie around the neck beneath the collar. Lower the collar only after the bow is finished.
- Keep the finished side facing outward. The smooth, finished fabric should face away from your neck. Tags, labels, stitching, and the underside should face the shirt.
- Set the starting length. When tying yourself, let the wearer’s right end hang approximately 1–2 inches longer than the left. This is a starting point, not a universal measurement: the right offset depends on your neck size, the tie’s length, the fabric thickness, and how much material the first knot consumes. Guides commonly suggest anywhere from about 1 inch to a few inches. See the guidance from The Knot and R. Hanauer.
- Smooth the tie and practice first. Packing creases make the folds harder to hold, so carefully remove wrinkles or steam the bow tie if the fabric allows. Do one complete rehearsal with the shirt and collar you plan to wear rather than attempting the knot for the first time just before a ceremony, performance, or photograph. Martha Stewart and Charles Tyrwhitt also emphasize preparing and practicing before the event.
Mirror tip: Your right side appears on the left side of a mirror. A flat diagram, a person viewed face-to-face, and a mirror can therefore make the same end appear to change sides. If the picture seems reversed, ignore left and right and follow long end and short end.

How to Tie a Bow Tie in 8 Steps
1. Cross the long end over the short end
Bring the long end across the short end near the base of your throat, making a loose X.
Keep the crossing point close to the collar. It should be secure enough that the fabric does not slip, but not tight enough to prevent you from folding the bow.

2. Bring the long end through the neck opening
Take the long end underneath the short end and bring it up through the neck opening, just as you would begin tying a shoelace. Pull gently to make a small, secure neck knot.
Do not tighten this knot fully. Place the long end over your shoulder temporarily so it stays out of the way while you form the first wing.
3. Form the first bow wing
Fold the short end horizontally at its widest part. This creates the first bow wing. Hold the fold directly in front of the neck knot with one hand.
The useful beginner cue is fold wide. Folding near the narrow tip makes a small, floppy wing and leaves the finished bow short. At this stage, you should see one horizontal wing held against the center of the neck.
4. Drape the long end over the center
Bring the long end down from your shoulder and lay it vertically over the center of the first bow.
For a moment, the tie should look like a nearly finished bow from the front: one wing is folded horizontally, and the long end hangs straight down over its middle. Keep the layers reasonably flat and make sure the finished side remains outward.
5. Find the hidden opening
Pinch the two sides of the first bow together and pull them slightly forward, toward your chest. This exposes a small opening behind the first bow and in front of the neck knot.

This opening is often easier to locate by feel than by sight. Keep it open with an index finger if necessary. The hidden-loop maneuver is the part most likely to confuse a beginner; R. Hanauer and Charles Tyrwhitt both break this stage into smaller movements for that reason.

6. Fold the long end into the second wing
Take the hanging long end and fold it back on itself at its widest part, creating the second horizontal wing.
Hold this fold between your thumb and forefinger. Do not try to pull the entire straight end through the opening; only the folded section should enter it.
7. Push the second wing through the opening
Push the folded section of the long end through the opening behind the first bow. Pull it through far enough to form the second wing, but do not flatten or tighten the whole knot yet.
If the long end disappears completely, too much fabric has gone through. Pull it back until the folded portion forms a visible second wing. The two folded sections should now sit on opposite sides of the center knot.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems8. Tighten and adjust the bow
Hold the folded wings and tighten the bow by pulling opposing folded sections against each other, using the same basic action as tightening shoelaces. Pull the folded wings, not the loose straight ends.
Make small adjustments to the wings, center knot, and neck fit. The finished bow should sit horizontally beneath the collar, with its center near the middle of your neck. Lower the collar once the bow is secure.
Do not chase mathematical perfection. A hand-tied bow is normally slightly irregular. It should look roughly balanced, comfortably snug, and intentionally hand-tied rather than perfectly rigid.
How to Adjust the Finished Bow
- To tighten the bow: Pull the folded wing sections in opposite directions, as you would tighten a shoelace.
- To loosen it: Ease the folded wings apart slightly before reshaping the center knot.
- To enlarge a small wing: Pull more of that folded section through the center opening, then retighten gradually.
- To reduce an oversized wing: Push part of the folded section back through the opening rather than pulling on a straight end.
- To level the bow: Hold the center knot steady and rotate or flatten each wing until both run horizontally beneath the collar.
- To correct the neck fit: Adjust the band only after the bow shape is established. The neckband should be secure and comfortable, not painfully tight or loose enough for the bow to drop below the collar.
The bow should not pull the collar upward or press uncomfortably into the neck. If the band cannot reach comfortably around your neck, or if a large amount of band remains exposed, the issue may be the tie’s size rather than your technique.

What a Properly Tied Bow Tie Should Look Like
Use this checklist before leaving the house:
- The bow sits directly beneath the collar rather than several inches below the throat.
- The center knot is near the middle of the neck.
- The two wings are similar in general size and extend naturally from the center.
- The wings lie mostly horizontal and do not point vertically.
- The fabric is not twisted, and the underside or tags are not showing.
- The bow does not extend excessively toward the jaw or far beyond the collar.
- The neckband feels secure but comfortable.
Slight asymmetry is normal and can make a self-tied bow look natural. A wing that is a little larger than the other is not automatically a mistake. A dramatically uneven bow, exposed underside, twisted fabric, vertical shape, or hanging tail means the tie needs another adjustment.
Common Problems and Quick Fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| There is not enough fabric to make the second wing. | The ends started too close to equal, or the first neck knot used too much length. | Untie and begin again with the long end about 1–2 inches longer. Increase the difference slightly if needed. |
| You cannot find the second loop. | The first bow was not pulled forward far enough to expose the opening. | Pinch the first bow, pull it toward your chest, and feel behind it with an index finger for the opening in front of the neck knot. |
| The finished bow points up and down instead of side to side. | One of the folds was made in the wrong direction. | Untie back to the first wing and refold both sections horizontally at their widest parts. |
| The bow is tiny or floppy. | The fold was made near the narrow tip. | Start again and use the broadest part of each end. Remember: fold wide. |
| The long end disappears through the opening. | The entire straight end was pulled through instead of only the folded section. | Pull the long end back until its folded portion forms the second wing. |
| One wing is much larger than the other. | The starting length was uneven, the center knot is loose, or the final adjustment was uneven. | Hold the center knot and make small pulls on the opposing front and back folded sections. Do not yank the free ends. |
| The underside or tags are visible. | The tie twisted during the cross or a fold was turned the wrong way. | Reset the cross and keep the finished face outward, with labels and stitching against the shirt. |
| The neck feels tight. | The initial knot was tightened too early, or the neckband is too short. | Loosen and retie with a relaxed initial knot. If the band still does not fit, check the tie’s actual neck-size range. |
| The bow sits too low. | It was tied below the raised collar, or the collar was lowered before the knot was finished. | Retie with the bow tie under the raised collar and lower the collar only after the final adjustment. |
| You keep reversing the instructions. | Left and right are changing depending on whether you are looking in a mirror or at a diagram. | Stop using side names. Identify the pieces as long end and short end, then follow the sequence. |
Tying a Bow Tie on Someone Else
The same knot works when you tie a bow tie on another person, but the starting view is mirrored.
- Stand facing the wearer.
- Use the wearer’s neck and collar as your reference, not your own left and right.
- Reverse the starting-side instruction so the correct end is longer from the wearer’s perspective. When you are facing the wearer, this will appear opposite to the self-tying setup.
- After setting the lengths, use the labels long end and short end through all eight steps.
- Check the wearer’s comfort before lowering the collar.
The Knot recommends mirroring the self-tying instructions for this situation. If you stand behind the wearer rather than facing them, the apparent left-right relationship changes again, which is another reason to rely on long and short rather than side names.
If You Are Left-Handed
The knot’s structure does not change for a left-handed person. Keep the same long-end/short-end sequence, but use whichever hand naturally holds the first bow and whichever hand comfortably guides the second folded wing through the opening.
Some instructions are written for right-handed movements and may feel awkward when followed literally. R. Hanauer suggests trying the opposite hand arrangement if necessary. Do not reverse the entire method automatically; reverse individual hand positions only when that makes the folds and hidden loop easier to control.
Choosing the Right Bow Tie
Self-tie, pre-tied, or clip-on?
| Type | Advantages | Trade-offs | Useful for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-tie | Traditional, adjustable while tying, and naturally individualized in shape. | Requires practice and can be difficult when you are under time pressure. | Weddings, black-tie events, formal dinners, performances, or anyone who wants to learn the classic skill. |
| Pre-tied | Fast, consistent, and easy to fit with an adjustable band. | The bow is already formed, so it cannot be tied manually and usually has a more uniform appearance. | Emergencies, children, quick changes, or accessibility needs. |
| Clip-on | Fastest to put on and remove, with no neckband knot to manage. | It clips to the collar rather than tying around the neck and is not a self-tie. | Costumes, uniforms, children, or situations requiring quick removal. |
TieMart’s bow-tie guide distinguishes these constructions. If you only have a pre-tied or clip-on bow tie, you cannot use the eight-step knot above; follow the product’s adjustment or clipping instructions instead. A pre-tied bow tie can still be a practical and appropriate choice when speed, accessibility, or a child’s comfort matters.
Check the neckband range
Fit has three separate parts:
- Neckband fit: the band must reach comfortably around the neck without choking, slipping, or leaving excessive exposed band.
- Bow profile: the finished wings should be an appropriate width and height for the shirt collar.
- Proportion: the bow should look balanced with the wearer’s face and collar, not so large that it reaches toward the jaw or so small that it disappears beneath the collar.
Manufacturers use different adjustment systems and ranges. As product examples, TieMart lists many pre-tied models at approximately 12–19 inches, with some extending to 21 inches, while its self-tie examples adjust up to 18 inches. Brooks Brothers lists one self-tie butterfly bow tie for neck sizes from 13¾ to 18 inches. These are product-specific examples, not universal industry standards; check the actual measurements for the bow tie you are buying. The Knot’s suggestion to add 19 inches to your neck measurement is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee, because adjustable bands and bow-tie designs differ. Compare that estimate with the manufacturer’s range and your shirt collar before purchasing. See R. Hanauer’s sizing guide, TieMart’s size chart, and the Brooks Brothers product example.
Match the fabric to the occasion
Silk and velvet are commonly used for more formal looks, while cotton and other fabric bows can read as more casual or daytime-oriented. For conventional black-tie attire, Emily Post lists a black silk, satin, or twill bow tie with a tuxedo. Creative black tie may allow more color or pattern, so the invitation’s wording should control rather than the assumption that every bow tie must be black or every formal event requires exactly the same outfit.
Pre-Event Checklist
- Confirm that the bow tie is a self-tie and fits your neck.
- Practice the complete knot at least once with the actual shirt and collar.
- Remove creases without damaging the fabric.
- Remember: wearer’s right end longer when tying yourself.
- Use long end and short end instead of relying on mirror-reversed left and right.
- Leave enough time to untie and restart if the second loop cannot be formed.
- Check the final bow from the front and both sides before lowering the collar completely.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which end should be longer when tying my own bow tie?
Start with the wearer’s right end approximately 1–2 inches longer than the left. Treat that as a flexible starting point rather than a fixed law; tie length, neck size, fabric thickness, and the first knot all affect the final amount needed.

Can I tie a bow tie in front of a mirror?
Yes. Your right appears on the left side of the mirror, so side-based instructions can seem reversed. Set the wearer’s right end longer at the start, then follow the labels long end and short end rather than looking for a particular side.
Why can’t I find the second loop?
The first folded bow probably has not been pulled forward enough. Pinch its two sides together, pull them slightly toward your chest, and feel behind the bow but in front of the neck knot for the small opening. Keep it open with an index finger while guiding the second folded wing through.
Should a self-tied bow tie be perfectly symmetrical?
No. It should be roughly balanced, level, and free of twists, but slight asymmetry is normal for a hand-tied bow. A dramatically uneven wing, vertical bow, exposed underside, or hanging tail indicates that it needs adjustment.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I use these instructions to tie someone else’s bow tie?
Yes, but mirror the starting setup when you are facing the wearer. Use the wearer’s neck and collar as the reference, then identify the pieces as long end and short end for the rest of the knot.
What if my bow tie is too small?
First check the manufacturer’s neckband range and adjuster. If the band cannot reach comfortably around your neck, or if the bow requires extreme manipulation to sit beneath the collar, use a larger or differently sized bow tie rather than forcing the knot.
Is a pre-tied bow tie acceptable?
It can be practical for children, quick changes, uniforms, emergencies, and accessibility needs. It is simply a different construction: the bow is already formed and fastens with an adjustable band. Use a self-tie when you specifically want the classic manually tied method.
How early should I practice?
Practice before the event, ideally with the shirt and collar you will actually wear. One relaxed rehearsal is more useful than trying to learn the hidden-loop step immediately before a wedding, performance, dinner, or photographs.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Start with the wearer’s right end slightly longer, keep the initial knot loose, fold both wings at their widest parts, and find the hidden opening by pulling the first bow forward. Tighten the folded wings—not the straight ends—until the bow is level, secure, comfortable, and roughly balanced.
