Peeling-paint textures come in three useful forms: flat image files for backgrounds and graphics, prepared overlays for photo effects, and tileable PBR materials for 3D surfaces. The resources below are verified examples from the available listings—not a verified set of 20 currently free downloads. Check each item’s current availability, file details, and license on its own page before using it.
Choose the right kind of peeling-paint texture
- Flat image texture: a JPG or PNG you can place into a design as a background, surface, or graphic element.
- Overlay: an image intended to sit above artwork or a photograph, with its appearance adjusted using a layer blend mode.
- PBR material: a set of maps for texturing a 3D surface. Map availability, resolution, and tileability can differ from one material to another.
“Free” does not establish permission for every use. Confirm whether the asset’s terms allow commercial work, require attribution, or restrict redistribution. Do not redistribute the original files unless the license explicitly permits it.

How to use an overlay in a 2D design
- Open your artwork or photo in an editor that supports layers.
- Place the peeling-paint image on a new layer above the artwork.
- Try a blend mode and adjust the layer’s opacity or position until the texture fits the composition. The Creative Fabrica overlay description recommends choosing a blend mode but does not prescribe one.
- Inspect the result at the size it will be viewed or printed. A listed DPI value is metadata, not a guarantee of print quality at every output size.
What to check before downloading or publishing
- File and workflow: confirm whether you are getting a flat image, a prepared overlay, or a PBR material, and whether your software can use it.
- Dimensions and maps: use only the specifications stated for that individual asset. Do not assume one listing’s pixel size applies to a collection or category.
- Seamless behavior: a category or directory may include both tileable and non-tileable options. Check the chosen asset’s own details and preview before using it as a repeating surface.
- License: review the original item’s current terms for commercial work, attribution, and redistribution. Marketplace terms and availability can change.
- Source page: when a roundup links elsewhere, treat it as an index and verify the download at the original provider.
