HDR photography is most useful when a scene contains more contrast than one exposure can comfortably preserve. The examples below show how photographers handle that challenge in churches, landscapes, and changing light—and why HDR can look natural, dramatic, or panoramic depending on the capture and edit.

What makes a photograph HDR?
Exposure bracketing means capturing the same scene at different exposure levels so the frames retain detail in dark areas, bright areas, and the tones between them. HDR is the combined, processed image—not the bracket itself. Nikon explains the distinction through familiar high-contrast scenes such as a bright window in a dim room or sunlight beside deep shadows (Nikon UK’s bracketing and HDR guide; Nikon USA’s HDR overview).
Not every HDR-looking edit needs multiple captures. A RAW file may contain enough tonal information to recover detail from highlights and shadows on its own. Adobe contrasts a single RAW image of Yosemite in winter with a mountain-village scene made from three bracketed frames (Adobe’s HDR explanation, published October 10, 2023).

1. Biblioteca del Monasterio de El Escorial — Peter Li
Li’s 2023 photograph of the monastery library puts HDR to work in an architectural interior, where bright and dark areas can compete within the same frame. Nikon UK identifies the equipment as a Nikon Z8 with a NIKKOR Z 14–24mm f/2.8 S lens, captured at 14mm with bracketed exposures. The example shows how wide-angle framing and bracketed capture can record the scale of a room without leaving its contrasting tones to a single exposure (Nikon UK).

2. Iglesia de San José — Peter Li
This church interior is especially useful for seeing HDR as a process rather than a button. Nikon UK presents an unprocessed HDR image, a version with the dark-area color brightened, and Li’s final treatment. The progression makes clear that merging exposures does not decide the finished look: local adjustments can lift shadow color and direct attention through the interior (Nikon UK).
3. York Minster at sunset — Peter Li
For this 2024 image, light streams through York Minster’s Great West Window above tall pillars and a vaulted ceiling. Li used a vertical panorama, or vertorama, to emphasize the height of the interior. He describes metering for the stained-glass window and capturing darker frames for the church itself—a practical example of balancing luminous glass against a dim space while composing for a vertical subject (Nikon UK).

4. Basílica de El Escorial — Peter Li
Li combines two techniques here: a vertical panorama and exposure bracketing. Nikon UK describes five sets of exposures bracketed across seven stops, shot at 14mm. The example demonstrates the added capture complexity of a vertorama: the photographer must account for both the broad tonal range of the interior and the multiple frames needed to cover its height (Nikon UK).
5. Rusted truck in a field — Tony Sweet
Nikon USA’s example starts with five exposures of an old truck: +2, +1, 0, −1, and −2 EV. The merged result can be processed toward a realistic rendering, a hyper-real image, or something between. That flexibility is central to HDR’s appeal: the bracket captures tonal information, while the edit determines how strongly the final image departs from ordinary-looking light (Nikon USA).

6. Rooftop pool at The Standard, Los Angeles — Lindsay Silverman
Silverman’s historical example catches a rooftop pool as sunset light changes. He describes making a two-shot, in-camera HDR capture and setting −3 EV for the difference between foreground and background. Nikon identifies the camera and lens as a D800 and AF-S NIKKOR 24–70mm f/2.8G ED; those details belong to this past example, not a current equipment recommendation. Silverman’s account also shows that a tripod is helpful rather than compulsory: he describes handheld HDR with a stabilized lens (Nikon USA).

7. Mountain Village, Nepal — Adobe
Adobe’s mountain-village example balances a snowy highlight against shaded foliage. The photographer made three frames—a normal exposure, one two stops brighter, and one two stops darker—then merged them into a DNG and edited it in HDR mode. It is a clear demonstration of the standard bracket-and-merge approach, as well as why the brighter and darker source frames matter when a scene spans snow and shadow (Adobe).

Choose a scene with a real tonal problem
Look for a composition where exposing for the highlights would leave important shadows too dark, or exposing for the shadows would wash out bright areas. A window against a dim interior is a classic case; direct sunlight beside deep outdoor shadows is another. If one RAW exposure retains the detail you need, a multi-frame merge may add unnecessary work.
Make the bracket stable and consistent
Keep aperture consistent when practical; Nikon’s examples use aperture priority for that reason. Choose a bracket suited to the scene rather than assuming one fixed number of frames will work. Nikon examples include three-, five-, and seven-frame approaches, and the available settings vary by camera. A tripod helps minimize movement between frames, although handheld capture can work when circumstances and stabilization allow (Nikon USA; Adobe Lightroom Help).

Merge, align, and check for movement
In Lightroom desktop, Adobe’s HDR merge workflow offers Auto Align, Auto Settings, and a deghosting control. Auto Align can help correct slight movement in handheld source frames; deghosting addresses semi-transparent artifacts when something moves between exposures. Start with a low deghosting amount and adjust while checking the preview, since moving subjects may still require careful selection of the best result. Adobe also documents HDR panoramas made from consistent bracketed source frames (Adobe Lightroom Help; Adobe’s HDR editing guide).
Shape the look without losing the subject
HDR can preserve tones without looking exaggerated, or it can lean into heightened color and contrast. Nikon’s examples describe natural, hyper-real, and intermediate treatments. When evaluating an image, ask whether highlights and shadows retain useful detail, whether color intensity suits the scene, and whether halos or ghosting distract from the subject. Processing choices are personal, but artifacts are usually easier to notice when they obscure the very details HDR was meant to preserve.
Quick Recap
How to compare HDR examples
| Example | Scene and tonal challenge | Capture approach | What to notice |
|---|---|---|---|
| El Escorial library | Architectural interior | Bracketed exposures; 14mm | Wide interior coverage and tonal range |
| Iglesia de San José | Church interior | HDR merge with staged processing | How brightening shadow color changes the final image |
| York Minster | Stained glass and dim interior | Vertorama with darker frames for the interior | Combining tonal control with vertical composition |
| Basílica de El Escorial | Large-scale basilica interior | Five sets, seven-stop brackets, vertical panorama | The complexity of panoramic HDR capture |
| Rusted truck | Outdoor subject | Five frames from +2 to −2 EV | How processing ranges from realistic to hyper-real |
| Rooftop pool | Pool at changing sunset light | Two-shot in-camera HDR; −3 EV setting | Balancing foreground and background as the light changes |
| Mountain Village, Nepal | Snowy highlight and shaded foliage | Three frames: normal, +2 stops, and −2 stops | A classic bracketed merge from contrasting tones |
What good HDR does—and what it does not require
- It addresses a scene whose highlights and shadows exceed what one exposure can retain satisfactorily.
- Bracketing is one capture method; HDR is the merged or processed result.
- A multi-frame merge is optional when a RAW file already contains enough usable tonal information.
- Movement between frames can create ghosting; stable capture, alignment, and selective deghosting can reduce the problem.
- There is no single mandatory HDR aesthetic: natural, intermediate, and strongly interpretive results are all creative choices.
