Photoshop’s Patterns panel makes it possible to apply a preset directly to text, pixel layers, and shape layers—or use a pattern fill layer when you want to keep scale, angle, and blending adjustable. For downloadable patterns, first check what the file actually contains: a Photoshop pattern preset, a flat image, or another kind of asset. Then verify the license and test how the repeat looks at your intended size.

How to apply a pattern in Photoshop

In Photoshop desktop, open Window > Patterns to show the Patterns panel. Adobe documents several ways to apply a preset, depending on the layer you are working with. Adobe’s guide to managing patterns covers these workflows.

  • Text: Select one or more text layers, then click a pattern in the panel.
  • Pixel layer: Drag a pattern from the panel onto the layer in the Layers panel.
  • Shape layer: Select the shape layer and choose a pattern for its fill.
  • Separate fill layer: Use the panel’s modifier-drag method to add a pattern as a fill layer.

Choose a pattern fill layer for easier revisions

A pattern fill layer is useful when you may need to revise the pattern or its appearance later. Adobe says you can change the pattern, scale, angle, and blending options without altering the original image. In Adobe’s words: “Pattern fill layers offer the greatest flexibility, as you can adjust the pattern, scale, angle, and blending options at any time without altering the original image.”

How to find and organize patterns

If a preset is missing, open the Patterns panel menu and look for Legacy Patterns and More. To organize a collection, use that menu to create a New Pattern Group, then drag presets into it. The same menu includes Restore Default Patterns if you want to reset the library.

How to make a repeating pattern

Photoshop includes a workflow for building a repeat from visual content. Adobe recommends using Pattern Preview, which works best with smart objects. Adobe’s Pattern Preview guide documents the process:

  1. Open a document and choose View > Pattern Preview.
  2. Add the content for the repeat, such as text, images, colors, or shapes.
  3. Choose Edit > Define Pattern, enter a name, and confirm. The new pattern appears in the Patterns panel.

Before using a repeat in finished artwork, preview it at the intended scale and inspect the tile edges. A downloaded image is not necessarily seamless just because it can be used as a pattern.

Where to look for free pattern assets

Adobe published a roundup called Free Textures and Patterns for Photoshop & Illustrator on May 15, 2017. It is a historical roundup, so check whether any specific asset it mentions is still available.

Adobe Stock’s free collection is a broader asset library, not a directory of Photoshop pattern presets. Its FAQ, last updated March 27, 2026, lists free photos, vectors, illustrations, videos, design templates, motion graphics templates, and 3D assets. You need to sign in with an Adobe ID to download a free collection asset. Check the download itself to confirm whether it is a loadable Photoshop pattern, a flat image, or another asset type. Adobe Stock’s FAQ and licensing information explains its asset categories and terms.

Check a pattern pack before downloading

Free pattern collections can differ in file type, repeat quality, compatibility, and usage rights. Before you rely on a pack, check its own download page for:

  • Visual fit: Is the collection geometric, organic, textured, or decorative, and does that suit the artwork?
  • File contents: Does the download include a Photoshop pattern preset, a flat image, or a different asset?
  • Repeat and scale: Can you control the scale, and do the tile edges look right at the size you need?
  • Compatibility and import steps: Does the creator explain how to load the files in your Photoshop version?
  • License terms: Check commercial use, attribution, redistribution, and any other restrictions rather than relying on the word “free.”
  • Access requirements: Look for account, sign-in, or download-limit conditions.

What “free” means for Adobe Stock assets

Adobe’s FAQ says free photos, vectors, and illustrations in its collection carry a Standard license; free videos, templates, and 3D assets carry an Enhanced license. It describes free collection downloads as having a royalty-free commercial-use license, subject to restrictions, and says free downloads are subject to limits. The FAQ does not give one general limit that applies to every user. Review the individual asset’s license and restrictions before using it, and do not assume that “royalty-free” means unrestricted.
