Freehand curved piecing joins fabric pieces along curves cut and shaped by hand rather than relying on a fixed template. Jean Wells introduced the technique alongside color exploration in “Piece & Play,” a feature in the February 2015 issue of American Patchwork & Quilting. Its publisher names Kona Cotton Solids by Robert Kaufman Fabrics for the feature. A companion pincushion project shows one small way to use a curved-pieced unit, but its instructions do not explain how to construct that unit.

What “Piece & Play” covers

The February 2015 issue overview describes Wells teaching freehand curved piecing and exploring color. The overview, published November 18, 2014, identifies her as the designer and Kona Cotton Solids as the featured fabric collection. It also said the issue was available digitally at that time; current availability is not established. See the publisher’s issue overview.

The technique is a way to make curved joins without treating every curve as a standardized template shape. That broad description is useful for understanding the idea, but the available project pages do not show Wells’s exact cutting, alignment, sewing-machine handling, or pressing method. For those steps, consult the original lesson rather than treating the companion pincushion finishing instructions as a tutorial for piecing curves.

How to approach a first freehand curve

Start with a modest practice unit and decide what kind of curve you want before cutting: a gentle sweep, a tighter bend, or an intentionally irregular line. Those choices, together with the number and scale of the pieces and how controlled or freeform you want the result to appear, are practical planning questions—not a tested ranking of methods or difficulty.

  • Curve shape: A broad, gentle curve and a compact bend call for different visual effects. Choose the shape to suit the composition you want.
  • Scale: A small unit limits the amount of fabric involved while you explore a color pairing; a larger unit makes the curve more prominent.
  • Piece count: Decide whether the curve will join two pieces or form part of a more complex composition.
  • Seam management: Consider how comfortable you are guiding a curved seam and whether the intended result should look smooth and deliberate or more spontaneous.

Use quilting cotton fabric if you want to follow the companion project’s material context. Kona Cotton Solids are the collection named for Wells’s feature, not a requirement for trying the technique; other suitable cotton fabrics can serve for practice.

A small project example: the companion pincushion

The publisher’s “Lesson #1 Pincushion” turns a freehand curved-pieced unit into the top of a pincushion. The project pairs that unit with a 6-inch print square for the back and gives a finished size of 5½ inches square. It calls for a milliners or straw needle and either crushed walnut shells or fiberfill. Read the publisher’s pincushion project.

The published directions describe how to assemble and finish the pincushion cover, not how to create the curved-pieced top:

  1. Place the top and 6-inch backing square right sides together and sew around the edges, leaving a 1½-inch opening.
  2. Clip the corners, turn the cover right side out, and fill it with crushed walnut shells or fiberfill.
  3. Slip-stitch the opening closed.
  4. Use a milliners needle to make four dimples.

These steps explain the small project’s finishing sequence. They should not be mistaken for curve-cutting or curved-seam instructions.

How the series developed

Later 2015 issue excerpts identify freehand curved piecing as Lesson 1 and show the series moving into combinations with itty-bitty piecing and skinny insert strips. That establishes a broader creative context for the technique, but the excerpts do not supply the complete original lesson. The December Lesson 6 excerpt is available here, and the October Lesson 5 excerpt is available here.
