To generate AI images of yourself, upload a photo to an image-generation tool, describe the transformation you want, then inspect and refine the result. ChatGPT Images, Gemini Apps, and Adobe Firefly document photo-upload and image-editing workflows, but none guarantees an exact likeness.
Before uploading a face photo, check the service’s current privacy controls. This guide explains how to choose a tool, write a useful prompt, iterate on the result, and manage the image and source conversation.

2. Check privacy before uploading
A face photo is personal content. Read the current privacy and activity settings for the specific service and account you plan to use. Training use, retention, processing, and deletion are separate issues; turning off a setting does not necessarily mean an upload is immediately deleted or never processed.
- OpenAI: Content from individual services may be used to train models unless you opt out. OpenAI says new conversations after opting out are excluded, and Temporary Chats are not used for training. Business inputs and outputs are not used for training by default. These statements do not mean that no other processing or retention occurs. See OpenAI’s data-use policy.
- Google Gemini: With Keep Activity on, uploaded media may be used to improve services with human reviewers. Google says some chats may be reviewed by trained human reviewers. Temporary chats and chats with Keep Activity off are retained with the account for 72 hours for response and safety purposes; Google may still process them to respond and protect users. - Adobe Firefly: Check the current product terms and licensing guidance for the model and features you use.
Use your own photo, or get permission from anyone else pictured. Avoid uploading highly sensitive images simply because a service accepts them. Crop out other people and private details when they are not needed.
3. Upload a photo and describe the transformation
The services document image upload and editing, but the reviewed documentation does not establish one universally ideal reference photo. Choose an image that is appropriate for the result you want and that you have the right to use.
Describe the desired image clearly. Include its intended use, framing, setting, clothing, lighting, background, and visual style. State which elements should stay similar and which should change, without expecting a guaranteed exact likeness.

Use this photo as a visual reference for me. Create a warm, natural-looking author portrait in a bright home office, waist-up, with soft window light, a neutral background, and a navy shirt. Keep the composition simple. This is a prompt example, not a tested recipe or a guarantee of likeness.
4. Generate, inspect, and refine
Treat the first result as a draft. Generate a few alternatives if the tool allows, then inspect the face, hands, text, and background for mistakes. Product documentation describes editing and variations; it does not guarantee faithful likeness or an artifact-free result.

- Choose one change: for example, change the background or soften the lighting.
- Ask for that change: say what should change and what should remain similar.
- Inspect the whole image: a targeted edit can affect other areas too. Check the face, edges, hands, text, and background.
- Save a version you like: keep the original and any intermediate images you may want to revisit.
For example, ask, “Keep the composition but make the light softer,” or, “Change the crop to a square head-and-shoulders portrait.” ChatGPT documents conversational and selection-based edits; Gemini documents editing uploaded and generated images; Firefly describes image-to-image transformation and variations.
5. Save the output and manage the source conversation
Download or save the image you want to keep, and check how the service handles its image library, conversation history, and account activity. Deletion steps differ by service and can change.

Consent, commercial use, and provenance
Use images responsibly
Use your own likeness or obtain permission from anyone else depicted. Do not create deceptive or harmful depictions of another person, including non-consensual sexual or humiliating transformations. A service’s ability to generate an image does not establish that a particular use is lawful or ethical.
Check commercial terms
Adobe says outputs from its Firefly models are designed to be safe for commercial use, but imported assets still require licensing review and partner models may have different terms. Do not extend that statement to other services or uses. For ChatGPT, Gemini, or any partner model, check the applicable current terms before using an image commercially.
Disclose and interpret provenance carefully
Label an image as AI-generated or AI-edited when viewers could mistake it for a documentary photograph or real event. OpenAI says supported files can be checked for provenance signals associated with OpenAI, including SynthID or a trusted C2PA manifest. A signal does not establish accuracy, whether the image was edited, legal ownership, creator identity, or context. Not detecting a signal does not prove that an image was not AI-generated.
