Yes—you can turn yourself into a custom 3D-printed miniature. But the product advertised as an “action figure” is often a fixed display figurine, not a poseable toy. Your main choices are an in-person multi-camera scan, a photo-based reconstruction, or a custom digital sculpt. The best option depends on likeness, budget, delivery time, pose, finish, and whether you need a physical figure or a reusable 3D model.
What you are actually buying
These products are easy to confuse:
- 3D scan: A digital representation of your body, clothing, pose, and surface appearance.
- Printed figurine: A physical miniature based on a scan or photographs, usually with a fixed pose.
- Action figure: Technically, a figure with joints, accessories, or movable parts. Many custom “action figure” services use the term loosely and sell static statues instead.
- Bobblehead: A deliberately stylized head-and-body product with less anatomical accuracy.
- 3D avatar: A digital model intended for games, animation, augmented reality, or virtual try-on.
Before ordering, confirm whether you are receiving a static sculpture, an articulated toy, a digital file, or some combination of those.
The original 54-camera mini-me
A 2016 Futurism report described doob’s “dooblicator,” an in-person system that used 54 synchronized cameras to photograph a person from multiple angles. Photogrammetry software combined those images to estimate the subject’s three-dimensional shape and surface color, after which a proprietary process produced a printable model.

The report described full-color figures starting at approximately $95, with standard sizes reaching about 14 inches. It also reported that life-size figures could be printed in sections and assembled. That price and availability are historical; they should not be treated as current doob pricing or proof that the original service remains available. Read the original Futurism report.
Why synchronized cameras matter
Photogrammetry works best when all the images describe the subject at effectively the same moment. If someone moves between exposures, the software may combine different positions into one distorted model.
Possible results include doubled geometry, misaligned facial features, warped clothing, hair artifacts, or a figure that cannot stand. The original report quoted doob’s claim that the cameras needed timing accuracy of roughly one-tenth of a second and that simultaneous lighting could capture motion such as twirling clothing. Those were company claims reported in 2016, not independently measured performance data for modern services.
A dramatic pose can look excellent in a photograph but fail as a sculpture. Jumping, one-legged, or arms-outstretched poses may require a broad base or hidden supports.

How a custom mini-me is made
- Capture: You are scanned in person or provide photographs.
- Reconstruction: Software or an artist creates a 3D mesh from the images.
- Cleanup: Holes, impossible geometry, thin parts, and unstable areas are repaired.
- Color and texture: The model receives color information or is prepared for painting.
- Printing: The figure is printed at the selected scale.
- Finishing: It may be cured, cleaned, assembled, painted, varnished, and mounted on a base.
- Shipping: The finished object is packaged and delivered.
Not every company offers a digital preview, revisions, hand painting, or a copy of the 3D file. Treat those as service-specific features.
How accurate can it be?
“Remarkably accurate” does not mean perfect. Likeness depends on camera coverage, lighting, movement, image quality, reconstruction software, printer resolution, scale, and post-processing.
Common differences include slightly altered facial proportions, simplified hair, darkened clothing folds, color shifts, missing details between fingers, and distortion around glasses or shiny fabrics. Long hair may become a single mass, thin straps may break, and small accessories may disappear.

Larger figures can preserve more visible detail, especially in the face and clothing. They also cost more, take longer, weigh more, and may make mesh errors easier to see. Full-color printing does not guarantee photographic color matching: one scan-based vendor warns that clothing and skin tones can differ and that shadows and folds may print darker. In-person scan versus photographs
| Option | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| In-person scan | Captures the whole body and pose from many angles; useful for costumes and distinctive clothing. | Requires travel, availability may be limited, and the subject must remain still. |
| Photo-based reconstruction | Can be ordered remotely and is convenient for gifts. | Unseen geometry must be inferred; likeness and styling vary widely by provider. |
A scan is generally the stronger choice when whole-body proportions and a specific pose matter. Photos are more convenient when travel is impractical or the figure is primarily a gift.
What current services cost
Prices below are listed examples observed in 2026, not universal market rates:
- 3D MiniMe Selfie: Listed single-figure prices from $49 for a Nano standing figure to $499 for a Jumbo, with other larger options listed separately. The company says its scan takes less than one second and estimates delivery at four to six weeks. Pricing and service details.
- MiniMeFig Studio: A photo-based figure listed at $79 on sale, compared with $99, at approximately 6–9 cm. Product page.
- Figuro: Listed half-body figures in approximately the 6–10 cm range at about $78–$147, with larger custom products reaching approximately $499. Product page.
Check whether the quoted price includes shipping, taxes, a base, painting, revisions, couples’ fees, props, and rush production. A custom figure made for a birthday or wedding should be ordered well ahead of the event; one scan-based vendor quotes four to six weeks, while another recommends ordering three to four weeks in advance.

Full-color printing applies color during the printing process. It is scalable and can reproduce an overall outfit and appearance efficiently, but fine details may soften and colors may not match the subject exactly.

- THE PRODUCT IS A REALISTIC 3D SCULPTURE, NOT A 2D FLAT STANDING!
- ACCURACY & LIKENESS: We go deeply into tiny details from the eyes, eyebrows, skin tone, and facial expression to the smallest patterns and features of the outfit's fabric. We carefully identify each person’s distinctive characteristics and bring it to life on the statue for a maximum recognizable result
- PROOF OF 3D DESIGN: After 5 days from placing order, I'll send you your digital 3D DESIGN via Amazon messages
- PROOF OF COMPLETION: 7 days later from the 3D design, I'll send you a picture of your FULLY COMPLETED SCULPTURE with colors.
- REVISIONS AVAILABLE: I'll be with you with every step. You can ask for any minor adjustments during the process. Please check the Amazon Messages regularly.
Hand painting can improve facial accents, shading, and costume details, but it costs more and depends on the painter. Painting improves surface appearance; it does not fix an inaccurate underlying model.
How to get a better result from photographs
- Use sharp, well-lit images without beauty filters.
- Avoid extreme wide-angle phone-camera distortion.
- Provide front, side, three-quarter, and back views when requested.
- Show distinctive glasses, tattoos, hairstyles, shoes, uniforms, and accessories clearly.
- Use a full-body reference if the pose matters.
- Avoid shadows across the face and heavily obstructed views.
- Ask whether the vendor wants a smile, neutral expression, or another specific look.
- Do not assume one old, low-resolution selfie is enough for a detailed figure.
For an in-person scan, wear the outfit intended for the final figure. Keep hands and arms separated where possible, avoid loose moving items, and choose a pose with a stable center of gravity.

The face does not look right
This can result from too few images, poor lighting, a single-photo process, intentional stylization, or a small final scale. Choose a vendor that provides a digital proof, submit multiple angles, and ask how corrections work before approving production. A render is not always a photograph of the finished print.
The figure cannot stand
Jumping poses, thin ankles, large accessories, long unsupported limbs, and uneven clothing can make a figure unstable. Request a broad base, concealed support, or a seated pose when stability matters.

Hair and clothing lose detail
Small prints cannot preserve every strand, fold, chain, or finger. Dark folds can merge visually, long hair can simplify into a solid shape, and thin straps can break. A larger size or simplified accessories may produce a stronger result.
The color is not exact
“Full color” is not the same as photographic reproduction. Printing materials, lighting, color gamut, surface texture, and source-image quality all affect the result.
Questions to ask before paying
- Is this a scan, a sculpt, a statue, or an articulated action figure?
- How many photographs are required, and is an in-person scan available?
- Is the figure full-body, half-body, bust-length, or head-only?
- Can I choose the pose, clothing, base, and accessories?
- Will I receive a digital proof? How many revisions are included?
- Is the proof a render or an image of the actual printed object?
- Is the figure hand-painted or color-printed?
- What material is used, and is it suitable for children?
- What is the final height and does it include a base?
- What happens if the likeness is poor or the package arrives damaged?
- What are the production and shipping times to my location?
- Who owns the uploaded photographs and generated 3D file?
- Are images retained, shared for marketing, or used to train AI systems?
- Can I request deletion, and can I use the 3D file commercially?
Who should buy one?
A custom mini-me works well as a graduation, wedding, anniversary, cosplay, convention, family, couple, or collector’s gift. It is especially appealing when the clothing or pose carries personal meaning.
It is a poor fit if you expect a mass-produced toy, perfect facial accuracy, child-safe durability, fast delivery, a reusable 3D file, or a low-cost fully articulated collectible. Confirm the product category before ordering: most services sell display pieces rather than toy-grade action figures.
Alternatives
- Local 3D-scanning studio: Best when you want to see the process and obtain a genuine full-body scan.
- Maker space or printing bureau: Gives you more control over modeling, materials, and finishing, but requires coordinating several steps.
- Custom digital sculptor: Better for fantasy costumes, unusual poses, and articulated collectibles, usually at a higher price.
- DIY photogrammetry: Possible with multiple cameras or carefully captured images, but mesh repair, supports, textures, scaling, and post-processing are the difficult parts.
- AI-assisted modeling: Useful as a starting point, but models often need manual cleanup and test printing.
- Digital avatar: More practical if your real goal is a game, virtual world, animation, or augmented-reality character.
Bottom line
The technology is real, but the buying decision is not simply whether you can be “printed.” Choose between an in-person scan and a photo-based service, decide whether you want a static display figure or a genuinely articulated toy, and confirm the scale, pose, finish, proofing process, privacy terms, delivery date, and final total before paying. For the strongest likeness, use multiple angles or a professional scan, select a stable pose, and treat every claim of “photorealistic” accuracy as a vendor claim rather than a guarantee.
