GIMP 3.0.6 Update 1 is a revised Windows installer for GIMP 3.0.6—not a separate major feature release. The official archive lists it as gimp-3.0.6-setup-1.exe, uploaded on October 7, 2025, one day after the original installer.

The revision is mainly relevant if the original GIMP 3.0.6 installer fails on an older Windows system, during reinstallation, or in a Windows Server deployment. If GIMP is already running correctly, there is usually no reason to reinstall solely because Update 1 exists. You can verify the file in the official GIMP Windows download directory. Avoid treating a third-party download page as the definitive source when the project archive is available.
What does Update 1 fix?
The available installer-specific report describes a crash or version-check problem affecting some Windows systems older than Windows 10 version 1903, including certain Windows Server environments. This detail comes from Neowin’s listing; the official GIMP 3.0.6 announcement confirms the revised installer exists but does not provide a separate, detailed changelog for it.
The safest interpretation is that Update 1 is an installer compatibility correction. It should not be presented as a general fix for every crash that occurs after GIMP launches, and it does not represent a new set of major painting or image-editing features.

Troubleshooting the installer
The original installer crashes
Remove the incomplete installer and download gimp-3.0.6-setup-1.exe from the official archive. Close other installers and software-management tools, then run the revised installer again. On an older Windows Server system, test it on one representative machine before deployment.
The revised installer still fails
Record the exact Windows version and build, system architecture, installer error, and any installation log. Repeatedly downloading unofficial copies is unlikely to solve an operating-system compatibility or permissions problem.
