GIMP 3.0 arrived on March 16, 2025, after roughly seven years of development. It brought a GTK3 interface, better HiDPI and tablet support, native Wayland support, non-destructive filters, stronger color management, and broader file-format handling. But GIMP 3.0 is now a retrospective release: GIMP 3.2 became the newer major branch in March 2026.
If you are installing GIMP for the first time, use the official GIMP downloads page and choose the newest stable 3.2 build available there. Keep GIMP 3.0 only when a tested plug-in, script, or production workflow specifically depends on it.
The short version: GIMP 3.0 is real, but it is no longer current
The original “GIMP 3.0 is finally here” headline was justified when the release arrived on March 16, 2025. It was the first major release after the long 2.10 era and followed about seven years of development.

GIMP 3.0 mattered because it was more than a routine bug-fix update. The project moved to GTK3, modernized desktop behavior, introduced non-destructive filters, improved tablet and display support, and updated its plug-in and scripting foundations. Those changes affected the application’s interface and architecture, so many could not simply be added to the older GTK2-based branch.
However, the release timeline has moved on:
- GIMP 3.0: released March 16, 2025.
- GIMP 3.0.8: released January 24, 2026, and described by the team as potentially the final 3.0-series maintenance release.
- GIMP 3.2: released March 14, 2026.
- GIMP 3.2.2: released March 28, 2026.
- GIMP 3.2.4: released April 19, 2026.
The official news feed checked through July 18, 2026 listed 3.2.4 as the latest numbered release item. Confirm the live downloads page before installing, because a newer maintenance build may have appeared since that check.
What made GIMP 3.0 such a big release?
GIMP is primarily a raster editor for painting, retouching, compositing, photo manipulation, batch conversion, and scripted image work. Version 3.0 modernized the platform underneath those tasks without turning the program into a subscription product.
Its headline changes included:
- A GTK3-based interface.
- Improved display scaling for HiDPI monitors.
- Better tablet input support.
- Native Wayland support alongside X11.
- CSS-based themes.
- A redesigned welcome dialog and usability refinements.
- Non-destructive filters.
- Improved color-space management.
- Better text handling.
- Expanded format support and improved import/export behavior.
- Updated plug-in and scripting APIs.
The release notes also document improvements across dialogs, layers, channels, paths, shortcuts, and off-canvas editing. For painters, the practical effect is less about one spectacular new brush and more about a more modern foundation for working with large displays, tablets, effects, and extensions.

GTK3, HiDPI, and CSS themes
The GTK3 migration changed the interface and enabled more modern desktop behavior. Better HiDPI handling is particularly useful on high-resolution laptops and monitors, where older applications can produce tiny controls or inconsistent scaling.
GIMP 3.0 also moved toward CSS-based theming. That gives themes a more flexible styling system, although a theme change does not automatically redesign every part of the application or make it behave like Photoshop, Krita, or another editor.
Tablet and Wayland support
GIMP 3.0 added native Wayland support while retaining X11 support. It also improved tablet handling, an important change for anyone using pressure-sensitive input for painting, masking, or retouching.
Wayland behavior can still depend on the desktop environment, compositor, tablet drivers, and display-server configuration. If a tablet behaves differently after upgrading, test the device in a simple new document and check the operating system’s tablet configuration before assuming that the project file is damaged.

Non-destructive filters
GIMP 3.0 introduced non-destructive filters. Instead of permanently merging certain effects into the underlying layer, you can retain the filter as an editable part of the layer’s processing.
This is one of the release’s most important workflow improvements for painters and photographers. It makes experimentation safer: you can revisit a filter, change its settings, or remove it without necessarily rebuilding the layer from scratch.
There is an important qualification: non-destructive filters are not the same as complete Photoshop-style adjustment-layer parity. Not every GIMP operation became non-destructive, and the available filters and workflow differ from Adobe’s layer architecture. Treat the feature as a major improvement, not as a claim that every edit is reversible.
Color management and text
GIMP 3.0 improved color-space management and text support. These changes help when a painting moves between documents, displays, formats, or print-oriented workflows, although professional color production still requires careful profile management and testing.

Text and usability improvements also reduce friction in ordinary work: navigating layers, channels, paths, shortcuts, and dialogs is part of every serious image-editing session, even when it receives less attention than a new filter.
Broader file-format support
GIMP 3.0 improved handling of several formats without promising perfect compatibility with every application.
- JPEG and TIFF files containing Photoshop-specific metadata such as clipping paths, guides, and layers receive better handling.
- DDS import supports modern BC7 compression, which is useful in some game-development workflows.
- Adobe Color Book and Adobe Swatch Exchange palettes are supported.
- Common formats including PNG, JPEG, GIF, TIFF, PSD, WebP, and others remain part of GIMP’s broader format ecosystem.
PSD support is useful, but importing or exporting a PSD is not the same as preserving every Photoshop feature. Smart objects, specialized effects, fonts, adjustment structures, and plug-in-dependent content can still require checking.
GIMP 3.0 versus GIMP 3.2
GIMP 3.2 builds on the 3.0 transition rather than replacing it with an unrelated application. The newer branch added or expanded:

- Overwrite Paint Mode.
- More non-destructive filter updates.
- Additional image and palette formats.

GIMP 3.2.2 addressed early-release problems, including a rendering bug affecting some filtered layers inside layer groups. GIMP 3.2.4 continued bug fixes, Windows scanning improvements, UX work, and stability fixes.
GIMP 3.2 also ended official 32-bit binary distribution. If you use an unusually old 32-bit system, check your operating system and distribution options before upgrading.

Remaining on 3.0 can be reasonable for compatibility, but it should not become an indefinite security assumption. Monitor official maintenance and security notices, and plan a controlled test of the newer branch.
Where to download GIMP safely
Use the official GIMP downloads page as the primary route. The project’s official archive is at download.gimp.org/gimp/, with the 3.0 archive at download.gimp.org/gimp/v3.0/.
Depending on platform and release, official or documented routes include:
- Windows installers.
- The Microsoft Store version for Windows.
- macOS DMG packages for Intel and Apple silicon.
- Linux Flatpak.
- Linux AppImage.
- Linux Snap.
- Source tarballs.
- Packages maintained by Linux and BSD distributions.
Do not use third-party download portals that wrap installers in advertising software or serve obsolete builds. If you manually download from the archive, prefer the supplied SHA256 or SHA512 checksum files. Check your architecture carefully:
- Intel/AMD Windows versus ARM Windows.
- Intel macOS versus Apple silicon macOS.
- x86_64 Linux versus ARM64 Linux.
A development build can have a higher-looking version number than a stable release. Do not install it merely because the number appears newer; follow the release channel and package labeling on GIMP’s official pages.
Windows, macOS, and Linux installation choices
Windows
The website installer is the straightforward choice for most users. The Microsoft Store package may offer different update delivery and validation timing, and GIMP has noted that Store packages can take longer to appear because of review processes.

As of a May 20, 2026 notice in the official news feed, the Microsoft Store version required Windows Build 20348 to address a potential data-loss issue. That requirement applies to the Store package; do not automatically treat it as a requirement for every Windows installation route.
macOS
Choose the DMG matching your Mac’s processor: Intel or Apple silicon. If you are unsure, open Apple menu > About This Mac and check whether the Mac lists an Intel processor or an Apple chip.
Linux
A distribution package usually integrates best with the operating system, desktop menus, permissions, and update tools. The trade-off is that repositories can lag behind upstream releases.
If your package manager still reports GIMP 2.10, compare it with the official Flatpak, AppImage, Snap, or a source build. Upstream packages generally provide newer versions sooner, while distribution packages may be more tightly integrated and tested for that distribution.

- Back up important XCF projects. Keep the original files untouched.
- Duplicate business-critical projects before opening them in a new major version.
- List your plug-ins and scripts. Check each developer’s stated GIMP version.
- Confirm fonts and linked assets are available on the upgraded system.
- Keep the previous installation if your operating system allows it and your workflow depends on a known-good environment.
- Export a flattened reference copy of important artwork so you can compare rendering after the upgrade.
- Test tablets, color profiles, and frequently used filters in a disposable project.
Major-version changes can affect APIs, interface behavior, filter rendering, color management, and plug-ins. That does not mean every old extension will fail; it means compatibility should be checked instead of assumed.

“My plug-in is missing”
Common causes include installing a plug-in into a GIMP 2.x directory, using a build that has not been ported to the GIMP 3 API, selecting the wrong architecture, missing a required runtime, or placing the file outside GIMP’s search path.
- Confirm which GIMP versions the plug-in supports.
- Download a GIMP 3-compatible build from the plug-in developer.
- Check GIMP’s plug-in search paths.
- Restart GIMP after installing the extension.
- If it causes crashes, test it with a clean user profile.
For additional filters, the free and open-source G’MIC project may be useful, but check its current GIMP version and operating-system compatibility before installing it.
“My old XCF project looks different”
Changed filter behavior, missing fonts, plug-in-specific layers, color-management differences, changed layer-group rendering, or missing linked assets can all alter the appearance.

Preserve the original, open a duplicate, install the required fonts and plug-ins, and compare the result with the older GIMP version if the file is business-critical. Exporting a flattened archival copy can preserve a visual reference, but it cannot replace the editable project.
“GIMP behaves differently on Wayland”
Native Wayland support is a GIMP 3.0 improvement, but behavior can still vary with the desktop environment, compositor, tablet driver, and display-server configuration. Test whether the issue appears in a new document, and compare Wayland and X11 sessions where your system provides both.
Is GIMP a Photoshop replacement?
For many painters, photographers, and hobbyists, GIMP can replace Photoshop for raster editing, retouching, compositing, painting, batch processing, and scripting. It is free to download and use, open source, cross-platform, and does not require a recurring subscription.
It is not automatically a drop-in replacement for every Photoshop workflow. Users may need to learn different terminology, shortcuts, panels, and non-destructive techniques. PSD compatibility is useful but not identical to native Photoshop compatibility. Professional CMYK, print-production, smart-object, collaborative, and Creative Cloud-integrated workflows may require additional tools or workarounds.

Who should install which version?
- Install GIMP 3.2 if you are starting fresh, want the newest stable branch, or need newer layer, brush, palette, format, and stability improvements.
- Use GIMP 3.0 if your current work has been validated on it or an essential plug-in or script has not yet been tested on 3.2.
- Keep an older version temporarily when a business-critical project depends on legacy behavior, but test and plan the eventual migration.
- Consider another application if your main need is vector layout, advanced print production, team collaboration, Adobe-specific interchange, or a painting-first interface.
