Verdict: GIMP 3.2.4 is now a serious free image editor and a recommended choice for most individual users who work with raster images, compositing, painting, retouching, or technical imagery. Its non-destructive filters, link and vector layers, improved PSD exchange, SVG export, better PDF options, and smoother everyday tools answer several of the complaints that gave GIMP its old reputation.
That does not make it Photoshop with the price removed. Photoshop remains the stronger choice for Firefly-powered generative features, Adobe Creative Cloud workflows, cloud-connected collaboration, and production pipelines that depend on complex proprietary PSD files. The accurate conclusion is narrower and more useful: GIMP is no longer a crippled alternative, but it is still an alternative with a different center of gravity.
What changed in GIMP 3.x?
GIMP’s modernization has happened in meaningful increments rather than through one cosmetic redesign. GIMP 3.0 made non-destructive editing available for many commonly used filters. GIMP 3.2 expanded that foundation with new layer types, better file exchange, improved text editing, more capable painting tools, and additional export options. The result is a workflow that is more reversible and less frustrating than older versions of GIMP, even though it is not non-destructive in every operation.

The version covered by this review is GIMP 3.2.4. In the official download information used for this review, it is identified as the stable release dated April 17, 2026. Check the official GIMP downloads page for the release currently offered when you install it.
1. Non-destructive editing is now a genuine strength
Older GIMP workflows often required users to commit a filter earlier than they wanted. Once a change was applied directly to pixels, revisiting the exact settings could mean undoing later work or rebuilding the effect. GIMP 3.0 substantially improved that situation by adding non-destructive editing for many frequently used filters, together with on-canvas previews and editable filter settings.
GIMP 3.2 broadens the model further. The official documentation describes GEGL filters as non-destructive layer effects by default, unless you choose to merge them immediately. Newer layer types can also take advantage of this approach. In practical terms, an effect can remain attached to a layer so that you can return to its settings while continuing to work on the composition.
- Useful for experimentation: you can try a blur, color adjustment, sharpening effect, or other supported filter without immediately baking it into the source pixels.
- Useful for revisions: a client or a future version of a painting can often be handled by editing the effect rather than reconstructing it.
- Useful for compositing: keeping source layers and effects separate makes it easier to adjust a multi-layer image late in the process.
There is an important limitation: not every GIMP operation is non-destructive. Some tools, paint actions, plug-ins, and workflows still alter pixels directly. Treat the feature as broad support for reversible filter-based editing, not as a guarantee that every action can be reopened later. The official documentation is the right place to check the behavior of a particular filter or tool.
2. Link and vector layers make GIMP more useful beyond basic photo editing
GIMP 3.2 adds link layers that incorporate an external image into a composition and update when the source changes. That is valuable when the same asset appears in multiple versions of a graphic, when a mock-up uses replaceable artwork, or when a project needs to stay connected to an image maintained elsewhere.
The release also allows the Path tool to create vector layers with adjustable fill and stroke settings. This gives designers editable geometric elements inside a primarily raster-based application. Logos, simple icons, interface elements, shapes, outlines, and repeated design components can be adjusted without treating every contour as permanently painted pixels.
These features move GIMP closer to a flexible raster-plus-vector workspace, but they do not turn it into a complete replacement for a dedicated vector design or desktop-publishing application. If your work depends on advanced vector illustration, long-form page layout, or a full print-production system, GIMP remains one part of the toolchain rather than the entire toolchain.
3. PSD compatibility is better, but do not promise perfect interchange
GIMP’s Photoshop file support has improved in the 3.x series. The current release material highlights better PSD exchange and additional PSD layer-style imports. GIMP 3.0 and the 3.2 work also cover formats and export improvements such as DDS BC7 export, SVG export, and expanded vector options for PDF export.
That is a substantial improvement for people who receive Photoshop files, exchange assets with other users, or need to move work between applications. It is still not the same as Photoshop opening its own native file format. PSD files may contain application-specific effects, proprietary layer behavior, fonts, adjustment features, or other information that does not translate perfectly.

Migration rule: never switch a production workflow based on a simple PSD test. Collect representative files first, including the most complicated layered documents, then compare layers, masks, text, effects, colors, and exported results in both applications.
For a personal workflow, the practical approach is to keep an editable GIMP working file and use PSD, PNG, TIFF, JPEG, SVG, or PDF exports according to the recipient’s needs. For a client or employer that explicitly requires Photoshop, improved compatibility may make GIMP a useful companion, but it does not remove the requirement.
4. Everyday workflow friction has been reduced
GIMP’s historical weakness was often not a lack of image-editing capability. It was the accumulation of small interface and workflow irritations. GIMP 3.2 addresses several of them:
- An improved on-canvas text editor makes it easier to edit text where it appears in the image.
- Additional text-outline controls give users more flexibility when text needs a visible border or graphic treatment.
- MyPaint Brush behavior has been upgraded, and the release adds 20 brushes.
- Images can be opened by dragging them onto the image tab.
- Shortcuts are available for Shear and Flip.
- A System color scheme option gives the interface another way to follow the operating system’s appearance.
These are not headline-grabbing features individually, but they matter in repeated work. A tool that makes text placement, brush selection, file opening, and common transforms less cumbersome is easier to live with than one that merely has a long feature list.
It would be too strong to say GIMP’s interface is universally easier than Photoshop’s. Users bring different habits, and people trained in Adobe applications may initially find GIMP’s panels, terminology, and shortcuts unfamiliar. The fairer description is that GIMP is more approachable and less dated than its reputation suggests.
5. GIMP is particularly credible for painting, masking, and retouching
GIMP remains fundamentally attractive to painters and image makers who want local, layer-based editing without a subscription. Brush-based work, masks, compositing, retouching, and image manipulation all fit its core strengths. The improvements to MyPaint Brush behavior, the additional brushes, and the new overwrite paint mode are especially relevant to artists who spend more time painting than designing elaborate page layouts.
If GIMP is primarily a painting, masking, or retouching tool for you, a pressure-sensitive drawing tablet can be a more meaningful accessory than another plug-in. It is optional—GIMP does not require one—but pen pressure and a direct drawing surface can make brush control more natural for illustration and detailed masks.

GIMP’s cross-platform availability also matters for artists who do not use Windows or macOS exclusively. It runs on Linux as well as the two major commercial desktop platforms, and the application is distributed as free software under the GPL.
6. Color management is more serious than the old stereotypes suggest
GIMP provides color-managed viewing features including proof colors, rendering intent, black-point compensation, and out-of-gamut marking. GIMP 3.2 also adds Total Ink Coverage display in the CMYK color selector. Those tools make GIMP more credible for photographers and print-aware users than the simplistic description of it as an RGB-only free editor.

They do not establish that GIMP matches Photoshop’s entire prepress ecosystem, device support, or commercial print integration. A print workflow still needs appropriate profiles, a reliable export specification, and a printer or production partner who can confirm the required settings.
For color-critical work, the display is part of the problem. A monitor calibration device can help establish a more trustworthy screen baseline before you evaluate proofs or make color decisions. It is not necessary for casual web graphics, and calibration cannot compensate for an incorrect profile or an unsuitable print process.

Where Photoshop still clearly leads
Generative AI is the biggest gap
Photoshop’s current advantage is not just a larger collection of conventional tools. Adobe places Firefly-powered generative features directly inside Photoshop. Adobe describes tools for adding, removing, or replacing objects; generating or expanding backgrounds; harmonizing an inserted object with its surroundings; and upscaling generated or existing imagery.
Those tools can shorten ideation and retouching tasks dramatically for users who want to describe an edit in natural language or generate alternatives without leaving the editor. Adobe states that desktop generative-AI features require an internet connection and use generative credits. Availability and limits can depend on the relevant Adobe plan, so check Adobe’s current Photoshop information rather than assuming every feature is included everywhere.
GIMP can be extended through plug-ins and scripts, but the reviewed official 3.2 release materials do not document a comparable first-party generative-AI feature set. If AI-assisted object replacement, expansion, background creation, or upscaling is central to your work, Photoshop has a clear functional advantage.
The Adobe ecosystem can be worth more than an individual feature
Photoshop is also the natural choice when the rest of the organization already uses Creative Cloud. Adobe Fonts, Lightroom integration, cloud storage, shared conventions, and client or employer expectations can reduce friction even when GIMP could perform the underlying pixel edits.
This is especially important in team environments. A freelancer working alone may be able to export a finished image and avoid most compatibility issues. A studio exchanging layered files, linked assets, fonts, comments, and revisions across several Adobe applications faces a much higher cost when one person works outside the standard pipeline.
Proprietary compatibility still affects risk
Improved PSD support is valuable, but the more a file depends on Photoshop-specific behavior, the less sensible it is to assume a clean round trip. If a customer sends a PSD and expects it to return with every layer, text element, effect, and adjustment behaving exactly as before, Photoshop remains the safer choice.

Photoshop remains the lower-risk choice when:
- Your employer, client, school, or production pipeline explicitly requires Photoshop.
- You use Generative Fill, Generative Expand, Generate Background, Harmonize, or other Firefly-powered tools regularly.
- Your files depend on advanced Photoshop-specific features or must round-trip through Adobe applications.
- Your team relies on Creative Cloud services, Adobe Fonts, Lightroom integration, cloud storage, or standardized Adobe workflows.
- The cost of a compatibility problem is higher than the cost of the subscription.
This is not a judgment that Photoshop users are paying for nothing. The subscription pays for access to a commercial ecosystem, proprietary compatibility, cloud-connected services, and AI capabilities that GIMP does not currently match according to the reviewed official materials.
How to test whether GIMP can replace Photoshop in your workflow
Do not decide from a feature checklist alone. Use a representative migration test:
- List your non-negotiables. Write down the operations you perform every week: masking, frequency-based retouching, text editing, batch exports, PSD exchange, print proofing, animation, plug-ins, or AI-assisted edits.
- Gather difficult files. Include layered PSDs, files with text, masks, effects, unusual color profiles, and assets supplied by clients. Work on copies, not originals.
- Recreate a normal project. Do not test only a simple crop and brightness adjustment. Reproduce the full sequence, including revisions and exports.
- Check the round trip. Open the result in the application your client or team uses. Inspect dimensions, colors, text, layer structure, masks, transparency, and visual effects.
- Separate editing from delivery. Decide which format is your editable master and which formats are exports. Do not assume that an interchange file is a perfect working master.
- Measure workflow friction honestly. Account for training, shortcuts, plug-in availability, file handoffs, and time spent finding workarounds—not just the purchase price.
If GIMP passes that test, it may replace Photoshop for that specific workflow even if it cannot replace Photoshop for every workflow. If it fails only on AI or a client-mandated PSD feature, using both applications may be more practical than forcing a total migration.
Installation: get the right GIMP package
Download GIMP from gimp.org, not from a search result that happens to offer an installer. The official download information for the version covered here lists packages for:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Linux: AppImage, Flatpak, and Snap options.
- Windows: x86_64 and ARM64 builds.
- macOS: Intel and Apple Silicon builds.
The listed packages identify macOS 11 Big Sur or newer and Windows 10.0.20348.0 or newer as supported requirements for those builds. Check the download page before installing because package availability and minimum requirements can change between releases.
GIMP specifically warns that it does not provide a package through Apple’s App Store. Third-party packages may include modifications or additional software, so the official site is the safest starting point. After installation, confirm that your brushes, fonts, color profiles, and plug-ins are available and compatible before opening an important production file.
Plug-ins and scripting
Extensibility is a real GIMP strength, although it is not frictionless. The official developer documentation describes Python 3 plug-ins through GObject Introspection and distinguishes several extension approaches, including GEGL filters, C plug-ins, introspected plug-ins, and Script-Fu plug-ins. That gives advanced users several ways to automate tasks or add tools.
The trade-off is that a plug-in written for one major version, operating system, or packaging method may not work unchanged in another environment. Treat third-party extensions as workflow dependencies: check their maintenance status, installation instructions, permissions, and GIMP version compatibility before making them essential to client work. The GIMP developer documentation is the appropriate reference for building or maintaining extensions.

Learning GIMP without importing every Photoshop habit
Photoshop experience transfers well at the conceptual level—layers, masks, selections, opacity, blend modes, paths, and filters—but not always at the interface level. A beginner should learn GIMP’s own layer, path, color, and filter model rather than treating every command as a renamed Photoshop command.
Because the 3.x series is still adding and refining features, check that any printed guide or tutorial specifically covers GIMP 3.x. An older GIMP book may explain fundamentals accurately while showing obsolete menus, plug-in paths, or interface screenshots. The official documentation and tutorials are safer starting points when a guide’s edition is unclear.
Bottom-line comparison
GIMP now covers a much larger share of serious image-editing work than its old reputation suggests. Non-destructive filters make experimentation and revision safer. Link and vector layers broaden compositing and design work. PSD handling, SVG export, PDF vector options, text tools, brush behavior, and shortcuts reduce practical friction. Color-management controls make it a credible option for print-aware users who understand the limits of their wider workflow.
Photoshop still earns its premium when the job depends on Adobe’s ecosystem, complex PSD fidelity, cloud-connected production, or integrated generative AI. That difference is not a failure of GIMP; it is the result of two products optimizing for different centers of gravity.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is GIMP free for commercial work?
Yes. GIMP is free software under the GPL, and the project’s FAQ says it may be used for any purpose, including commercial work. Free does not mean that every optional plug-in, course, accessory, or third-party service is free.
Can GIMP replace Photoshop completely?
It can replace Photoshop for many individual workflows involving raster editing, compositing, painting, retouching, and standard-format exports. It is not a complete replacement when you depend on Photoshop’s Firefly generative tools, Adobe Creative Cloud integrations, client-mandated Photoshop files, or proprietary PSD behavior.
Does GIMP have Generative Fill?
The reviewed official GIMP 3.2 materials do not document a first-party generative-AI suite comparable to Photoshop’s Firefly-powered Generative Fill, Generative Expand, background generation, Harmonize, and related tools. GIMP can be extended, but an extension is not the same as an integrated, officially documented feature set.
Can GIMP open and save PSD files?
GIMP’s PSD exchange has improved, including additional PSD layer-style imports, but compatibility is not perfect. Test representative production files, especially those containing complex effects, text, masks, or Photoshop-specific features, before relying on a round trip.
Which GIMP version should I install?
Install the stable package offered on gimp.org’s official downloads page. The version covered by this review is GIMP 3.2.4, listed in the research snapshot as dated April 17, 2026. Confirm the current version and your operating system’s requirements at download time.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: GIMP 3.2.4 deserves a recommendation for most individual image editors and a conditional recommendation for professional Photoshop-dependent workflows. It is now a capable, modern, no-subscription editor—not a Photoshop clone. Choose GIMP for control, flexibility, painting, compositing, and local open-source work; choose Photoshop when AI, Adobe integration, cloud workflows, or exact proprietary compatibility are central.
