Inkscape 1.4.3 is a maintenance release, not a feature-heavy redesign. Released on December 26, 2025 for Linux, macOS, and Windows, it addresses 24 crash or freeze conditions plus almost 100 other bugs and small improvements. That is why some coverage calls it a 124-fix update, although Inkscape’s own release notes use the more cautious wording “24 crash/freeze fixes” and “almost 100” additional corrections.
The practical question is whether those fixes affect your work. They matter most if you export JPEG files on Windows, import PDFs, convert strokes while preserving gradients or patterns, use complex SVG assets, or have experienced crashes around the Export dialog and file opening.
What Inkscape 1.4.3 is—and is not
Version 1.4.3 is the third maintenance release in the 1.4 series. It concentrates on stability, file handling, rendering, interface behavior, translations, and compatibility work rather than introducing a new set of headline drawing tools. The full details are in Inkscape’s official 1.4.3 release notes.
The final build was published on December 26, 2025. It is available through the project’s official download page for Linux, macOS, and Windows. Linux users should check whether their copy comes from a distribution repository, Flatpak, Snap, or an official package, since update timing and build behavior can differ.

How to interpret the “124 fixes” claim
“124 bug and crash fixes” is a reasonable shorthand for the scale of the release, but it is not the clearest official count. Inkscape explicitly lists:
- 24 crash or freeze fixes
- Almost 100 other bug fixes and small improvements
Together, that is more than 120 corrections. A precise total such as 124 appears to be an aggregate or editorial tally, not the number used in the project’s announcement. The distinction matters: the release is substantial for a maintenance update, but it is not a new major-version feature release.
The fixes most likely to affect everyday work

Export, import, and file-opening stability
The crash fixes target real production paths rather than one isolated tool. Inkscape corrected failures involving PDF export of clones that use context-fill or context-strokes, opening or closing files while the Export dialog was open, opening the Export dialog with certain documents loaded, and importing documents containing symbols or markers.

Other fixes cover SVG files with invalid patterns, missing linked images in particular debug-build situations, malformed “text in a shape” objects during export, and additional file-opening, importing, exporting, and object-handling cases. The release notes remain the authoritative list; the important takeaway is that documents that previously failed at the boundary between editing and export should be retested.
Interface and preference improvements
- All canvas right-click paste choices—such as pasting on the page or matching width, height, or size—are now accessible from the context menu.
- Commands-bar buttons appear progressively as the window is resized, rather than disappearing unexpectedly.
- Small visual adjustments can be made without editing the entire theme file.
- Selecting an object can optionally switch to that object’s page.
- The current layer can default to the layer containing the last selected object. If the option does not appear to take effect, resetting preferences may be necessary.
macOS: a font-rendering fix and an extension caveat
On macOS, 1.4.3 fixes a text-rendering problem in which interface text could display as rectangles (“tofu”) when particular fonts were installed. If menus or panels became unreadable after a font change, this is one of the clearest reasons to update.
There is also an important qualification for technical users. Later 1.4.x notes explain that the official macOS disk images added a security measure associated with CVE-2025-15523. When Inkscape is launched from the command line, extensions may not work, including some Python-based import and export extensions. This is a packaging and launch-path issue, not proof that every Inkscape extension is broken. Test command-line automation before moving a production workflow to the official 1.4.3 macOS package.

The multipage “bridge release” explained
Inkscape 1.4.3 prepares users for the planned multipage format associated with the 1.5 series. It is a bridge release, not the release that introduces the new format itself.
Older Inkscape versions may not correctly interpret pages created by 1.5 or later. If such a document is opened and saved in 1.4.3, it is converted back to the older page format. The future format is intended to use the standardized SVG svg:view element instead of Inkscape’s older custom page approach; the technical background is discussed in merge request 7525.
Keep an untouched copy before resaving a multipage file, and do not assume that 1.4.3 makes pre-1.4.3 versions fully compatible with future documents.

Translations and platform notes
The final announcement reports updates to 25 interface languages and 13 documentation languages. These are final-release figures, not the smaller numbers reported for earlier release candidates.
Linux users should also read the Wayland warning in the release notes. Depending on the GTK version, moving a docked tab or closing a floating dialog can still crash Inkscape, and undocking a dialog may detach the wrong dialog. Updating may fix other problems without eliminating every Wayland-specific failure.

- Have seen crashes while opening files, using the Export dialog, or exporting.
Before upgrading, back up important SVG and project files. If your workflow depends on macOS command-line extensions, custom builds, Python automation, or a Wayland desktop session, test a representative project first. Do not expect a universal speed boost: performance gains are targeted, with large-group ungrouping being a documented example.
Download the correct build
Use the official Inkscape 1.4.3 release page rather than an unverified mirror. On Linux, confirm which executable is actually being launched after installation; it is easy to install a new package while a different, older binary remains first in your PATH. Check Help → About Inkscape to verify the running version.
Bottom line
Inkscape 1.4.3 is a high-value reliability update for affected workflows: the project documents 24 crash/freeze fixes and almost 100 additional corrections, including Windows JPEG export, PDF import, gradients and patterns, text rendering, dialogs, and large-group handling. Treat “124” as a rounded tally, not an official exact promise. Upgrade if these problems affect you, while testing macOS command-line extensions, Wayland docking, and multipage files before changing a production setup.
