GIMP 3.2 is a stable release, and it includes link and vector layers first previewed in development version 3.1.4. These features let you keep externally edited artwork connected to a composition and preserve editable path-based shapes, though they do not turn GIMP into a full vector-illustration application or make every edit non-destructive. The latest 3.2-series maintenance release identified in the official material is GIMP 3.2.4, released April 19, 2026.
For painters, illustrators, and image-makers, the practical change is greater flexibility for mixed raster-and-vector work. Link layers can use an external source file, while vector layers keep paths editable inside a GIMP composition.

From a development preview to a stable release
The story began with GIMP 3.1.4, published September 1, 2025. It was the second development release leading toward GIMP 3.2 and introduced early implementations of link layers and vector layers.
At the time, GIMP explicitly warned that the development build was unsuitable for production use. That warning no longer describes the current feature set. GIMP 3.2.0 arrived as a stable release on March 14, 2026, and the two layer types shipped as part of that release.
The relevant current version is the 3.2 maintenance branch. The official GIMP 3.2.4 announcement describes bug fixes, user-interface updates, and additional safeguards against tools accidentally rasterizing link, text, and vector layers. It is a maintenance release, not the release that originally introduced these layers.
| Version | Status | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| GIMP 3.1.4 | Development release, September 1, 2025 | First public test of link and vector layers |
| GIMP 3.2.0 | Stable release, March 14, 2026 | Link and vector layers officially shipped |
| GIMP 3.2.4 | Maintenance release, April 19, 2026 | Bug fixes, UX polish, and stronger rasterization safeguards |
Users deciding what to install should therefore look for the stable 3.2 branch rather than an old 3.1 development snapshot. GIMP’s development-download page currently directs users seeking the stable version to GIMP 3.2.4 and does not list a recent numbered development version.
What link layers do
A link layer places an external image into a GIMP composition while preserving a connection to the source file. If the source is edited outside GIMP and the change is detected, the linked content can update in the composition.
An SVG maintained in Inkscape is a clear example. You can keep the logo as an SVG, place it in a GIMP project as a link layer, and continue editing the original artwork in Inkscape rather than exporting and replacing a flattened copy each time.
Link layers are similar in concept to linked smart-object workflows in Photoshop, but they should not be treated as identical or as a promise of complete feature parity. Their value is the external relationship: the source remains an independent file, while the GIMP project uses that file as part of its composition.
How to create a link layer
- Open an existing image in GIMP or create a new one.
- Open the File menu.
- Choose Open as Link Layer….
- Select the external image file.
- Edit that source file in another application, such as Inkscape.
- Return to GIMP and check that the linked content updates when the modified source is detected.
The documented creation path is File > Open as Link Layer…. Update behavior can depend on the operating system, file format, and whether GIMP detects the change, so “linked” should not be read as a guarantee of instantaneous updating in every situation.
Changing the linked source
The source can be managed through the layer’s attributes. Double-click the layer in the Layers dock, or use Edit Layer Attributes… from the layer menu, then change the source as needed. Exact labels and placement can vary slightly with the installed build and desktop platform.

Useful link-layer workflows
- Keep a logo authored in Inkscape available across several compositions.
- Reuse a product photograph in multiple campaign designs while maintaining one master image.
- Share UI assets or illustrations between projects without repeatedly importing replacement copies.
- Update a recurring campaign graphic from a single externally maintained source.
- Separate painting and compositing from the application used to author the original artwork.
The cost of linking: asset management
A link layer is not the same as an embedded, self-contained source document inside the XCF. The external file must remain available at the expected path and in a format GIMP can read.
Moving, renaming, or deleting the source can break the relationship. Copying an XCF without copying its linked assets can leave another person with an incomplete project. A practical arrangement is to keep an assets/ directory beside the XCF and preserve that structure when moving or handing off the project. Paths, permissions, sandbox restrictions, and differences between operating systems can also affect access.
If a link breaks, check that the original file still exists, restore the expected path, or use the layer’s attributes to select the source again. Rasterize only when making the project self-contained is more important than retaining the external relationship.
What vector layers add
Vector layers are path-based layers that preserve editable geometric information rather than storing only a grid of pixels. They expose fill and stroke properties, including stroke width and color or pattern options, and the visible shape changes when its underlying path changes.
This matters for painted compositions that contain clean shapes, lettering, masks, symbols, borders, or geometric accents. A shape can be adjusted, recolored, and transformed without repeatedly repainting or accepting the softness that can result from scaling a rasterized version.
How to work with a vector layer
- Select the Path tool.
- Draw a new path or edit an existing one.
- Create a vector or path layer from that path.
- Set the fill and stroke properties.
- Adjust the path to change the shape.
- Transform, recolor, or restyle the vector layer as required.
- Export in a format whose vector support matches the needs of the project.
GIMP 3.2’s release notes connect vector layers to the Path tool and document adjustable fills, strokes, widths, colors, patterns, and visibility. Fill and pattern swatches can also be dragged onto vector layers.
The release adds SVG export and expanded vector options for PDF export. Those options make vector layers useful beyond keeping shapes editable during composition, although export behavior remains format-specific. Inspect the resulting SVG or PDF when fidelity is important.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Vector layers are not a complete vector-illustration application
GIMP’s vector layers improve path-based work inside a raster editor. They do not automatically provide every feature of a dedicated vector application, such as the broader illustration, typography, page-layout, and path-operations ecosystems found in specialist tools.
Inkscape remains the stronger choice for SVG-native drawing and complex vector construction. A productive combination is to author artwork in Inkscape, bring it into GIMP as a link layer, and use GIMP for painting, retouching, compositing, and texture.

What “non-destructive” means here
GIMP 3.2 treats link layers, vector layers, and text layers as non-raster layer types. The important protection is not that every action can be undone forever. Instead, GIMP makes the transition to destructive pixel editing more explicit.
These layer types have Rasterize and Revert Rasterize operations. Rasterization is required before destructive actions such as painting directly on the layer or merging certain effects. If the change is recoverable, Revert Rasterize can clear destructive edits and restore the layer’s non-raster state.
That model has limits. It does not make every filter, mask, adjustment, paint stroke, or merge operation non-destructive. It also does not erase the consequences of external edits made to a linked source after the original layer state. Keep a backup of the XCF before crossing a rasterization boundary.
GIMP 3.2.4 specifically includes additional cases where tools could accidentally rasterize link, text, and vector layers, reinforcing that protection as an ongoing maintenance priority.
How the features matured after 3.1.4
The release-candidate period added polish and safeguards in response to testing. The RC1 announcement documented improvements to the new layer workflows and a Windows-specific link-monitoring problem associated with a GLib bug, along with a temporary workaround at that stage.
That RC issue should not be presented as a universal current defect in stable GIMP 3.2.4. It was part of the pre-release history, and behavior may have changed in subsequent builds. The RC3 announcement highlighted further work protecting non-raster layers from accidental destructive edits.

The progression is important: 3.1.4 was appropriate for testing and feedback, while 3.2 and its maintenance releases are the versions relevant to ordinary production decisions.
Other notable changes in GIMP 3.2
The release is broader than its two headline layer types. According to the official 3.2 announcement, notable additions and improvements include:
- MyPaint Brush-tool improvements.
- Twenty new brushes.
- Automatic adjustment to canvas zoom and rotation.
- A new Overwrite paint mode.
- Improved on-canvas text editing.
- Common keyboard shortcuts such as bold and unformatted paste.
- Additional text-outline controls.
- DDS BC7 export.
- Additional PSD layer-style import support.
- SVG export and expanded vector options in PDF export.
- General stability and user-experience improvements.
The 3.1.4 development release also previewed the GEGL Filter Browser, MyPaint Brushes 2 support, more than 20 brushes, the MyPaint “Gain” control, text-tool changes, additional image-format and plug-in changes, and fixes involving macOS, Windows, TIFF, metadata, and high-DPI behavior. Those details describe the development snapshot; they should not be assumed to have identical status in stable 3.2 unless confirmed by the final release documentation.

Who should use GIMP 3.2?
GIMP 3.2 is a strong fit if you want a free, open-source editor and your work combines painting or photo editing with externally maintained artwork. It is particularly useful for:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Artists who bring SVG assets into painted compositions.
- Designers who need editable fills, strokes, and paths without immediately flattening them.
- Open-source teams that want a cross-platform workflow.
- Users who frequently reuse logos, product images, interface elements, or campaign graphics.
- Anyone trying to reduce unnecessary rasterization while retaining GIMP’s raster tools.
It may not be the best fit if you need full Photoshop smart-object compatibility, collaborative cloud documents, built-in team asset management, a complete vector-illustration workflow, or maximum fidelity when exchanging proprietary files. It is also not a universal non-destructive editing solution.
Choosing between link and vector layers
| Requirement | Better choice |
|---|---|
| Keep an external SVG or image synchronized | Link layer |
| Draw and edit shapes inside GIMP | Vector layer |
| Maintain a brand asset in Inkscape | Link layer |
| Adjust fill and stroke directly in GIMP | Vector layer |
| Reuse an externally edited image across projects | Link layer |
| Export editable vector-oriented content | Vector layer, with format-specific checks |
The choices are not mutually exclusive. A project can use vector layers for shapes created inside GIMP and link layers for artwork maintained elsewhere.
GIMP compared with alternatives
Inkscape
Choose Inkscape for dedicated vector illustration, SVG-native editing, shape construction, and path operations. It is a natural companion to GIMP’s link-layer workflow, but it is not a replacement for advanced photo retouching and raster compositing.
Photoshop
Adobe Photoshop remains attractive for established professional raster workflows, mature linked smart-object usage, commercial integrations, and team familiarity. It is a weaker match for readers prioritizing free, open-source software or avoiding a subscription-based ecosystem.
Affinity Photo
Affinity Photo is a commercial desktop alternative for users seeking an integrated non-destructive photo-editing environment. It is not open source, is not the natural choice for Linux users, and does not target GIMP plug-in compatibility.
Krita
Krita is especially compelling for digital painting and brush-focused illustration. GIMP remains the more natural choice when the workflow depends on GIMP-specific plug-ins, established photo-editing behavior, or the layer model described here.
Photopea
Photopea is useful for occasional browser-based editing and for people who prefer a Photoshop-like interface without installing an application. Browser dependence, privacy considerations, performance limits, and weaker offline workflows matter for larger or sensitive projects.
Installation and documentation notes
GIMP 3.2 is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The official release material identifies Linux AppImage, Flatpak, and Snap options, Windows x86 and ARM installers plus Microsoft Store packages, and macOS DMGs for Intel and Apple Silicon.

At the initial 3.2 launch, GIMP noted that fully updated documentation was not yet ready and recommended continuing to use the 3.0 online documentation temporarily. For the new layer types, the 3.2 release notes are the more relevant reference, while older documentation should be treated as potentially version-limited.
Verdict
GIMP 3.2 is a meaningful workflow upgrade, especially for painting and compositing projects that mix pixels with logos, illustrations, reusable assets, and editable shapes. Link layers reduce the need to replace externally edited artwork manually; vector layers preserve paths, fills, and strokes inside the composition; and Rasterize/Revert Rasterize make the boundary between editable content and destructive editing clearer.
Install the stable 3.2 branch—specifically the 3.2.4 maintenance release identified in the official sources—if those workflows match your work. Just keep the distinction clear: GIMP is becoming a stronger raster editor with non-raster capabilities, not a complete replacement for Inkscape, Illustrator, a page-layout application, or every proprietary smart-object workflow.

What is the difference between a link layer and a vector layer?
A link layer keeps a connection to an external image file that can be edited in another application. A vector layer keeps a path-based shape editable inside GIMP, with adjustable fill and stroke properties.
Do link layers make a GIMP project self-contained?
No. The linked source remains an external file, so keep it available with the XCF and preserve its expected location when moving or sharing the project.
Does GIMP 3.2 make all editing non-destructive?
No. GIMP 3.2 adds protections and rasterize/revert-rasterize operations for link, vector, and text layers, but many other edits can still be destructive.
Can GIMP replace Inkscape for vector illustration?
Not for every workflow. GIMP 3.2 adds useful path-based layers and vector export options, while Inkscape remains the stronger choice for SVG-native drawing and complex vector construction.
