GIMP Sucks? Better Alternatives for Painting, Photos, and Design

GIMP is not universally bad—it may simply be the wrong tool. Here is the best alternative for painting, photography, Photoshop compatibility, Mac editing, Linux and browser workflows.

Yes—but only for the job you need to do. GIMP remains a capable, free, open-source raster editor, yet many people find its interface, RAW workflow, reversibility, and Photoshop compatibility frustrating. For most former Photoshop users, Affinity is the closest broad desktop replacement. For painting and illustration, Krita is usually the better choice. Mac users should consider Pixelmator Pro, while photographers often need darktable or RawTherapee alongside an editor.

Is GIMP actually bad?

GIMP is not objectively bad. It handles compositing, selections, masks, retouching, resizing, web graphics, and general pixel editing well, and it remains free, open source, and cross-platform according to its official site. The homepage listed GIMP 3.2.4, released April 19, 2026, when checked on August 18, 2026; that version may change after publication.

The more accurate criticism is that GIMP can be a poor match for users expecting Photoshop’s interface, Lightroom-style photo management, highly reversible editing, seamless PSD interchange, modern AI assistance, or team collaboration. “GIMP sucks” usually means one of those mismatches.

Why people become frustrated

  • Tool options, docks, layers, paths, masks, and transforms can feel unintuitive to people coming from Photoshop.
  • Many operations do not provide the same adjustment-layer, smart-object, or live-filter workflow users expect. GIMP 3.x improves modern and non-destructive capabilities, but it is not automatically feature-for-feature Photoshop.
  • RAW development normally happens through an external processor rather than inside a Lightroom-style catalog. GIMP explains this in its official FAQ.
  • PSD files can open, but complex smart objects, adjustment layers, effects, text, masks, plug-ins, and color behavior may not round-trip perfectly.
  • GIMP is a raster editor, not a dedicated painting application, RAW library, vector-design tool, or page-layout program.

Choose by workflow, not by a “best alternative” ranking

Main need First choice Why Main compromise
Free, open-source raster editing on Linux GIMP Zero cost, offline use, scripting, plug-ins, and mature raster tools Less familiar workflow for many users
Photoshop-like desktop replacement Affinity Polished layers, masks, non-destructive tools, and broad creative work Verify current terms, platform support, and file compatibility
Digital painting and illustration Krita Brush engine, artist-focused canvas, animation, and illustration tools Not a catalog-first photo workflow
Mac-native photo and design work Pixelmator Pro RAW, layers, vector tools, non-destructive adjustments, and Apple integration Mac only
Professional Adobe compatibility Photoshop Camera Raw, PSD ecosystem, plug-ins, AI features, and collaboration Subscription
Quick browser editing Photopea Familiar interface with no installation Browser performance, privacy, and offline limits
RAW photography darktable or RawTherapee Purpose-built development, batch work, and lens controls Needs a separate compositing editor
Logos and scalable artwork Inkscape Vector-native tools Not a photo editor
Page layout Scribus Desktop-publishing workflow Not a general image editor

Affinity: the closest broad replacement

Affinity is the strongest first trial for former Photoshop users who want a modern desktop workflow without an Adobe subscription. Its current direction combines photo, raster, vector, and layout work, with layers, masks, non-destructive editing, and RAW support.

Current 2026 coverage reports that the unified Affinity application is free to download and use (Digital Camera World; TechRadar). Treat that as a date-sensitive commercial claim and confirm the official terms at download or checkout.

Where Affinity fits

  • Good transition for Photoshop concepts such as layers, masks, selections, and adjustment-based editing.
  • Useful when one project mixes photos, design elements, vector shapes, and layout.
  • More approachable for many users who find GIMP’s docks and terminology unfamiliar.

Where it does not replace Photoshop perfectly

Test real PSD files before switching. Adobe-specific AI tools, plug-ins, collaboration, smart-object behavior, complex effects, and specialized prepress workflows may not transfer intact. Windows and Mac availability should also be checked for the release you intend to use.

Krita: better for painting and illustration

If your real complaint is that GIMP feels like the wrong canvas for drawing, try Krita. It is free, open source, and available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its brush engine, stabilizers, layers, masks, vector tools, comics features, and animation support are built around artists rather than photo correction. See its feature overview.

Krita is not the default answer for photographers. It does not replace a catalog-first RAW application, and its brush-centered interface can be slower for routine exposure correction, batch exports, metadata, and library searches. Choose it for painting, concept art, comics, texture work, and illustration—not simply because it is free.

Pixelmator Pro: the Mac-native option

Pixelmator Pro is designed exclusively for Mac. Its official product information lists RAW support, non-destructive color adjustments, layer editing, vector tools, Photoshop-file support, repair and background-removal tools, and machine-learning features. The retrieved Mac App Store price was $49.99 on August 18, 2026; app-store prices can change.

It is a strong fit for someone using Apple Photos, iCloud, Shortcuts, or Apple hardware who wants an approachable editor without a recurring subscription. It is not a choice for Windows or Linux, and it may not satisfy organizations dependent on Adobe collaboration, plug-ins, or exact PSD behavior.

Photoshop: when the subscription is justified

Photoshop remains the safest choice when clients, agencies, tutorials, plug-ins, PSD files, Adobe Camera Raw, AI tools, and collaboration are central to your work. Adobe’s US pricing page lists Photoshop at $22.99 per month on an annual, billed-monthly plan and the Photography plan at $19.99 per month; Adobe also lists a seven-day trial. Prices, promotions, and plan names vary by region and date, so confirm them at Adobe’s plans page.

RAW photography usually needs two applications

GIMP is a poor single-app answer for a photographer managing many RAW files. Its normal model is to call an external RAW processor, not to provide a Lightroom-style catalog and development environment (GIMP FAQ).

Use darktable or RawTherapee for development

darktable and RawTherapee provide exposure, white balance, lens, color, batch, and export controls. They are free and open source, and particularly useful for Linux users.

Add a pixel editor for finishing

Send the developed image to GIMP, Krita, Affinity, Pixelmator Pro, or Photoshop for compositing, detailed masking, text, and pixel-level retouching. This two-program workflow is often better than forcing one application to manage both a photo library and complex artwork.

How to switch without losing work

Do not migrate by opening one test image and deleting GIMP. Use representative projects and preserve originals.

  1. Keep untouched copies of your XCF, PSD, TIFF, RAW, fonts, brushes, presets, scripts, and color profiles.
  2. Test one layered XCF, one complex PSD, one RAW file, one portrait retouch, one text-heavy design, one masked composite, one web export, and one print or CMYK project if relevant.
  3. Check layer preservation, editable text, masks, colors, export quality, speed, undo behavior, plug-ins, and whether the project can be reopened later.
  4. Export flattened comparison copies, but never overwrite the source projects during the trial.
  5. Adopt the new tool for one real project before moving your entire archive.

When staying with GIMP is the smarter decision

  • You need zero cost, Linux support, open-source licensing, and offline operation.
  • Your work is mainly raster editing and your existing scripts or plug-ins already solve the hard parts.
  • PSD interchange is occasional rather than business-critical.
  • Your frustration is limited to panel arrangement, shortcuts, or unfamiliar terminology that training and customization can address.

A paid or platform-limited application is not automatically better if it introduces subscription costs, cloud dependence, vendor lock-in, or file-compatibility problems.

Alternatives for specialist work

Use Inkscape for logos, icons, diagrams, and scalable vector illustrations. Use Scribus for page layout and publishing. Neither is a direct replacement for GIMP, but each is more appropriate than a raster editor for its own specialty.
