Goodbye 2024, hello 2025. For a painter, the change of year can be more than a date on the calendar: it is a chance to look honestly at what the work asked of you, keep what you learned, and begin again without demanding a masterpiece on day one.
How can a painter say goodbye to 2024?
Start with the work you actually made, not the work you hoped you would make. Lay out a few paintings, sketches, color studies, or unfinished pieces from the year. Look for what kept drawing your attention: a subject, a palette, a technique, or even a question you have not answered yet.

- Choose one piece that taught you something, whether or not you consider it successful.
- Notice one habit that helped you paint and one that got in the way.
- Write down an idea you want to carry forward and one expectation you are ready to release.
A year-end reflection does not need to turn every experience into a lesson. Sometimes the honest conclusion is simply that a season was difficult, or that you kept showing up even when progress was hard to see.
What did 2024 ask us to notice?
A personal reflection can sit alongside a wider awareness of the world without pretending to explain all of it. The United Nations reported that the World Meteorological Organization confirmed 2024 as the warmest year in its record, at 1.55°C above the pre-industrial level. That annual finding is not, by itself, a determination that the Paris Agreement’s long-term temperature goal has been breached.

WMO spokesperson Clare Nullis described the human consequences as well as the measurements: “We saw extraordinary land, sea surface temperatures, extraordinary ocean heat accompanied by very extreme weather affecting many countries around the world, destroying lives, livelihoods, hopes and dreams.” For artists, attention to the changing world can shape what we notice and choose to depict; it is not a requirement to turn every painting into a statement.
How can you welcome 2025 without overplanning?
Set an intention small enough to begin and open enough to evolve. Instead of promising to finish a fixed number of paintings, you might commit to returning to the studio regularly, practicing one skill, or making a series of studies around a subject that matters to you.

- Choose a starting point. Pick one subject, material, or question you want to explore first.
- Make the first session manageable. Prepare your space and decide on a short, specific task, such as mixing a limited palette or sketching a composition.
- Leave room for change. Treat your plan as a guide, not a measure of your worth as an artist.
That approach leaves space for work, rest, and the unexpected. A new year can offer a fresh beginning without requiring you to erase what came before.
What did the January 2025 economic outlooks say?
At the start of 2025, two prominent institutions published different global growth forecasts. These were projections made at the time, not observed results for the year.

The figures should not be combined or treated as equivalent measurements without comparing the institutions’ methods. Nor do these January forecasts establish what actually happened in 2025.
