Google Whisk was a visual reference remixing tool: Gemini described the images you supplied, and Imagen 3 generated a new image from those descriptions. It was designed for fast creative exploration—not pixel-perfect editing or guaranteed identity preservation. Google is now moving Whisk’s capabilities into Flow, so the original mechanism and the current product context need to be explained separately.
What Google Whisk actually did
Google Whisk was a visual prompting and remixing tool, not a conventional image editor. You supplied reference images for a subject, scene, and style; Gemini interpreted those images and wrote descriptions of them; Imagen 3 then used the descriptions to generate a new image.

The original concept can be summarized as:

That distinction matters. Whisk was not documented as copying the source pixels, preserving a person exactly, or compositing one photograph directly into another. It extracted selected visual characteristics and asked a separate image-generation model to create a new result. Google launched Whisk as a Google Labs experiment in the United States on December 16, 2024, primarily for rapid visual exploration and ideation. Google’s launch explanation described it as a way to explore ideas without first writing a long, detailed text prompt.
How the original Whisk workflow worked
A typical project involved three kinds of visual input:
- Subject: the person, creature, object, or character to reinterpret.
- Scene: the environment, setting, or composition you wanted to borrow.
- Style: the visual direction, such as a handcrafted object, illustration, toy, sticker, or other art treatment.
After you uploaded or selected the images, the system performed two main operations:
- Gemini analyzed the references. Google said Gemini automatically generated detailed captions describing the uploaded images. Those captions could include apparent subject characteristics, setting, lighting, materials, colors, and stylistic qualities.
- Imagen 3 generated the result. The descriptions were passed to Imagen 3, which synthesized a new image rather than simply placing the original images together.
You could then inspect and edit the underlying prompt when the generated result missed something important. The practical workflow was therefore iterative: provide visual references, review the interpretation, correct the description if needed, generate again, and save or download the most useful version.
Why Google called it “Gemini-powered”
In the original documented architecture, Gemini and Imagen had different roles. Gemini was primarily responsible for understanding the reference images and turning them into captions. Imagen 3 was the named image-generation model that rendered the final output.
So, “Gemini-powered image generator” is a reasonable broad description of the user experience, but it is imprecise to say that Gemini itself was the final rendering model in the original Whisk pipeline. Google’s public product description supports the more specific explanation: Gemini interpreted the images; Imagen 3 generated the image. It does not establish undisclosed details about Google’s internal network architecture, tokenization, or inference implementation.
What Whisk was good at
Whisk’s strength was fast visual exploration. You could show the system a rough combination of subject, environment, and style instead of trying to describe every property in prose.

That made it a good fit for:
- Painting and illustration moodboards.
- Early character, creature, or costume ideation.
- Exploring different art directions for the same concept.
- Testing how a subject might look in a new environment.
- Turning a visual idea into merchandise-style concepts such as a plushie, enamel pin, or sticker.
- Producing several related directions quickly before committing to a more exact artwork or design.
For a painter, the useful question was not necessarily “Can this reproduce my reference?” but rather “What new visual direction does this combination suggest?” Whisk could function as a sketchbook for possibilities: a way to test palette, atmosphere, material, silhouette, and presentation before developing a final painting.
What Whisk could not reliably preserve
Google explicitly warned that the result might not preserve exact identity or physical attributes. A generated person could differ in height, weight, hairstyle, or skin tone. The same limitation applies more broadly to precise product geometry, costume details, logos, anatomy, and typography.
The reason is inherent in the workflow: the system generated a new image from descriptions of the references. It was designed to capture an “essence,” not to make an exact replica.
| Task | How suitable the Whisk approach was | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Generate several moodboard directions | Strong | Visual references can quickly establish a broad concept and style. |
| Explore a character or creature idea | Strong | Variation is useful during early ideation. |
| Try a subject in a different environment | Useful, with variation | The scene can guide the result, but details may change. |
| Preserve a recognizable face exactly | Weak | Identity and physical characteristics may drift. |
| Replace product photography without geometry changes | Weak | Generated objects may not retain exact dimensions or construction. |
| Reproduce a logo or small text precisely | Weak | Typography and branding details are not guaranteed. |
| Perform pixel-perfect retouching or masking | Not the right tool | Whisk was an image-generation workflow, not Photoshop-style editing. |
These are practical conclusions from Google’s description of Whisk as an essence-capturing system and its warning about changes to physical attributes. They are not a promise that every output will fail in the same way.

How to get more useful results from a reference-based workflow
- Give each reference a clear job. Use one image to establish the subject, another to suggest the setting, and another to communicate the style. Avoid combining unrelated references unless you want a deliberately unpredictable result.
- Start with a simple visual goal. For example: “Use this animal as the subject, this forest as the scene, and this handmade-paper look as the style.”
- Inspect the generated description. If an important color, material, accessory, or compositional feature is missing, correct the prompt rather than assuming the model understood it.
- Use several iterations for ideation. Treat the first generation as a direction, not as a finished painting or design specification.
- Check critical details manually. Examine faces, hands, anatomy, lettering, logos, repeated patterns, and object structure before using an output as a production reference.
- Keep the intended use in mind. A loose concept image may be excellent for a moodboard but unsuitable as a blueprint for manufacturing, a faithful portrait, or a client-approved product image.
Whisk Animate: from a still image to an eight-second clip
Google later extended the concept with Whisk Animate. Announced in April 2025, it used Veo 2 to turn images into eight-second animated clips. Google announced the feature for Google One AI Premium subscribers in more than 60 countries. The workflow was:
reference images → Whisk-generated still image → Whisk Animate/Veo 2 eight-second video
This was a connection between separate generation stages, not evidence that the original Whisk image model itself had become a video model. Google identified Veo 2 as the video-generation component.

Google also said that Veo 2 videos produced through Whisk Animate carried SynthID, an invisible digital watermark embedded in each frame to help identify the media as AI-generated. A watermark is a provenance or identification signal; it does not verify that the image or video depicts real events accurately.

What happened to Whisk? Google is moving its capabilities into Flow
The current product context is more important than the original launch description. On February 25, 2026, Google announced that the best capabilities from Whisk and ImageFX were moving into Google Flow, a unified workspace for generating, editing, and animating content. Google said Whisk and ImageFX users could opt in to transfer projects and assets into their Flow library beginning in March 2026. Read Google’s Flow transition announcement.
This does not support claiming that every standalone Whisk page or account surface permanently shut down on a particular date. The safer description is that Whisk is being folded into Flow. Readers looking for the same general image-remixing idea should investigate Flow first, while recognizing that older Whisk articles and screenshots describe an earlier product stage.
How the equivalent Flow workflow works now
Google’s current Flow documentation describes a workflow that preserves the reference-based spirit of Whisk while adding image editing and video connections:
- Open Flow and create or open a project.
- Use the prompt box or Flow Agent.
- Write a description of the desired image.
- Drag reference media into the prompt box, or add existing project media as “ingredients.”
- Select image generation, an aspect ratio, the number of outputs, and an available image model.
- Generate the image and review the alternatives.
- Use the result as a standalone asset, or use it as an ingredient or frame for video generation.
- Return to the asset’s image history when you want to compare or restore earlier versions.
Flow’s Agent can route a request to an appropriate image model, while the standard prompt box exposes model selection directly. The current Flow help documentation names Nano Banana Pro, Nano Banana 2 Lite, and Nano Banana 2 as its documented image models. That is why an up-to-date explanation should not call Imagen 3 the current Flow default without a date qualifier: Imagen 3 describes the original Whisk pipeline, while Flow’s current documentation describes a newer image stack. See Google’s current image-generation instructions for Flow.
Access, age, regions, and credits
Access to current Flow is not the same thing as access to the original Whisk experiment. Google’s current help documentation says ordinary consumer access requires:
- An age-verified Google account.
- The user to be at least 18 years old.
- A supported country or region.
- A qualifying Google AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra subscription.
Qualifying Workspace plans may also receive access with daily credits. Availability and individual features can differ by country, even where a Google AI plan is offered. Google specifically warns that using a VPN does not enable access from an unsupported region. Check Google’s current Flow access requirements and supported-region information before subscribing.

For readers comparing Google Flow access plans, the important variables are eligibility, available models, monthly or daily credits, and whether video features are included. Do not rely on an old Whisk pricing article: credit balances, model costs, plan names, and quotas can change. Google’s current guidance says free users may receive daily credits and paid users receive monthly allocations, but it also says model costs can change. Check the in-product settings for the current cost immediately before generating. Review Flow’s current credit guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Watermarks and responsible use
Google’s current Flow documentation says outputs generated using Veo and Imagen include invisible SynthID watermarks. It also says videos generated on Google One Free, Plus, and Pro tiers contain a visible Veo watermark; visibility on Ultra may be determined by local regulations. Google instructs users not to tamper with or remove the watermark. Check the current watermark policy.

Privacy: think carefully before uploading sensitive artwork
Flow’s data-use settings deserve attention if your references include private photographs, unreleased product designs, client material, or proprietary artwork. Google says that when Help improve Google Flow is enabled, it may use Flow interactions, uploads, generated outputs, related feature-usage information, and feedback to provide, improve, and develop Google products and machine-learning technologies.
Google advises users not to enter confidential information or anything they would not want a reviewer to see or Google to use for product improvement. Its data page also provides controls for disabling product improvement and deleting projects or all project data. Review those controls before uploading sensitive material, and do not assume that a Labs or consumer creative tool provides the same confidentiality posture as an enterprise workflow. Read Google’s Flow data and privacy guidance.
Whisk versus Flow at a glance
| Question | Original Whisk | Current Flow context |
|---|---|---|
| What was the central idea? | Use subject, scene, and style images as visual prompts. | Generate and edit with text, reference media, and project “ingredients.” |
| What model roles did Google document? | Gemini captioned references; Imagen 3 generated the image. | Current help documentation names Nano Banana Pro, Nano Banana 2 Lite, and Nano Banana 2 for image creation. |
| Was exact copying promised? | No. Google emphasized essence rather than exact replication. | No basis for assuming pixel-perfect preservation. |
| Could it connect to video? | Whisk Animate used Veo 2 for eight-second clips. | Generated images can serve as ingredients or frames for Veo workflows. |
| Where should a new user look? | Historical or transition-era Whisk references. | Flow, subject to current age, region, plan, and credit requirements. |
Bottom line
Whisk’s defining innovation was visual prompting: Gemini interpreted reference images and Imagen 3 synthesized a new composition from those descriptions. That made it fast and approachable for moodboards, painting concepts, character exploration, and playful style changes, but it also meant that faces, anatomy, proportions, logos, text, and product details could drift.
Whisk Animate later used Veo 2 to turn generated stills into eight-second clips. As of the current Google product direction, the relevant image-generation, editing, and animation capabilities are being consolidated into Flow. Use Whisk documentation to understand the original Gemini-plus-Imagen idea; use Flow’s live documentation for current models, access, credits, privacy controls, and video workflows.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Google Whisk copy reference images exactly?
No. Google described Whisk as capturing the essence of reference images rather than producing exact replicas. Faces, body proportions, hairstyles, skin tone, logos, typography, and product geometry may change.
Did Gemini generate the final Whisk image?
In the original documented workflow, Gemini analyzed the uploaded images and generated detailed captions. Imagen 3 then used those descriptions to generate the final image. Calling Gemini the sole final rendering model would be imprecise.
Could Whisk create videos?
Google announced Whisk Animate in April 2025. It used Veo 2 to turn an image into an eight-second animated clip, with SynthID embedded in each frame.
Is Google Whisk still available?
Google is moving Whisk’s best capabilities into Flow. Because standalone availability can vary during the transition, new users should check Flow first rather than assume that an old Whisk URL or workflow remains unchanged.
How do you access Google Flow after Whisk?
Current Flow access generally requires an age-verified account, an age of at least 18, a supported region, and a qualifying Google AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra subscription, although qualifying Workspace plans may also receive access. Requirements and credits can change.
The Bottom Line
In short: Whisk did not simply have Gemini draw an exact copy of your image. Gemini described your visual references, Imagen 3 generated a new image from those descriptions, and the result favored creative recombination over fidelity. Google is now moving those capabilities into Flow, whose current documented image models and access rules are different from the original Whisk setup.
