You can start making digital art with an app and an input device you already have. Choose a small subject, sketch it, use layers when they help you revise, build up color and value, then save an editable project and export a separate copy for sharing. A drawing tablet is optional; start with a mouse, trackpad, or compatible stylus and learn the basics before expanding your setup.
What you need to make digital art
You need a digital canvas, an art app, and a way to make marks. A desktop painting app such as Krita supports mouse input as well as a graphic-tablet pen. Procreate is an iPad option for people who want a mobile workflow. Check device and stylus compatibility before choosing an app or buying equipment.
The equipment is only the starting point. Observation, shape, proportion, perspective, value, color, and composition matter more than a premium device or a large brush collection. Choose a setup you can use comfortably and regularly.

Three practical setup options
| Setup | How it works | Consider |
|---|---|---|
| Computer and mouse | Draw or paint in a desktop app using a mouse. | A practical way to begin with equipment you already own; input may feel less expressive than a pen. |
| Computer and graphic tablet | Use a pen on a separate tablet while looking at the computer display. | Check operating-system and app compatibility, and allow time to get used to drawing away from the screen. |
| iPad and compatible stylus | Use a tablet computer as both display and drawing surface. | Check compatibility for the specific iPad and stylus, and confirm the app suits your workflow. |
Krita’s starter guide explains how to begin with a mouse or graphic-tablet pen. Procreate’s Beginners Series introduces its iPad workflow. Neither route requires buying a particular device to learn the fundamentals.
What to buy first—and what not to buy yet
If you already have a computer, try a painting app with your mouse before shopping. If you want pen input, compare a beginner drawing tablet with stylus based on compatibility and whether you prefer drawing on a separate surface or directly on a display. Check the exact device and app requirements before buying.
If you prefer drawing on an iPad, check that the iPad and stylus you choose are compatible with each other and with your intended app. Do not assume every stylus works with every tablet.
Start with a small brush set and the tools you need to sketch, paint, erase, choose colors, zoom, and manage layers. You do not need premium hardware, dozens of brush packs, or accessories to begin. Add tools only when you can identify a specific problem they will solve.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Choose software by workflow, not popularity
There is no universally best digital-art app. Consider what device you already own, the app’s operating-system requirements, how you prefer to draw, and what kind of work you want to make.
| Application | Useful when | Consider |
|---|---|---|
| Krita | You want a desktop painting app and the option to start with a mouse or graphic-tablet pen. | Review its features and starter guide to see whether its tools and interface suit you. |
| Procreate | You want an iPad-based painting workflow. | Check iPad and stylus compatibility. Its Beginners Series covers the app’s fundamentals. |
Before committing to software, check its current device support, file formats, and how it saves editable projects. Choose an app that supports the type of artwork you want to make rather than trying to find a universal winner.
Follow one complete beginner workflow
Choose one modest project and take it from blank canvas to exported image. A simple still life, character, landscape, or icon is enough. Finishing a small exercise teaches you the full process better than repeatedly starting an ambitious piece.
1. Pick a route and create the document
Use the device and app you have, or choose a compatible setup that fits your needs. Decide where the image will be used before setting up the canvas. For a screen post, use dimensions suited to the intended platform; for print, check the print provider’s requirements. Krita’s starter guide uses A4 at 300 ppi and RGB/8-bit per channel as an example setup, not a universal rule.

2. Practice the interface with a tiny exercise
Make a few lines, circles, and simple forms. Try a brush, color selection, undo and redo, erasing, zooming, moving the canvas, and basic layer controls. Krita’s starter guide and Procreate’s beginner lessons introduce these basic tools.
3. Make a loose sketch
Use a simple brush and concentrate on placement, gesture, silhouette, proportion, and composition. Work from large shapes toward smaller forms rather than polishing details immediately. Keep the sketch easy to revise; hide it or reduce its visibility when it has served its purpose.
4. Separate work with layers when it helps
Put the sketch on one layer, then add separate layers for clean lines, colors, or details when independent editing will help. Layers make it easier to revise components, but you do not need a new layer for every mark. See the Krita guide to basic concepts or Procreate’s beginner lessons for more on layers.
5. Block in color and value
Start with a few large color or tonal shapes. Establish the subject, background, and main light and shadow areas before adding texture or small details. Zoom out to check that the image reads clearly at a glance.
6. Refine forms, edges, and details
Move from large forms to smaller ones. Check whether the light direction is consistent, then refine the edges and details that help explain the subject, material, or focal point. Introduce selection, transformation, or adjustment tools when they solve a specific problem, rather than treating them as required steps.
7. Save an editable original and export a delivery copy
Save the app’s native project file before exporting, so you retain an editable version. Krita’s starter guide describes saving its project file; Procreate’s Share Handbook explains its native project and export options.
Choose an export format for the intended use. PNG is useful when transparency or lossless image quality matters. JPEG is widely supported and flattened, but it is lossy. PDF can suit document-style distribution or print-house delivery, and PSD can be used when another Photoshop-compatible workflow needs layers. Confirm the recipient’s or printer’s requirements. Keep the native project separate from the delivery copy.
The fundamentals that software cannot replace
Shape, proportion, and negative space
Compare relationships instead of drawing isolated symbols. Notice the relative size of forms, the angles between landmarks, and the shapes of the empty spaces around your subject.

Perspective and construction
Use simple forms, a horizon, or guides to help construct scenes. Perspective tools can assist, but you still need to consider which surfaces face the viewer and how objects relate in space.
Value before color
Value is the arrangement of light and dark. A clear value pattern helps viewers read a subject and its focal point. Color alone cannot fix confusing light and dark shapes.
Color relationships
Begin with a limited palette and consider hue, saturation, and value. Working from a reference can help you observe color relationships rather than choosing every color from memory.
Composition
Guide attention with scale, overlap, contrast, rhythm, and spacing. Small thumbnails can reveal an unclear arrangement before you invest time in details.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAnatomy, materials, and edges
For figures, study gesture and structure rather than copying disconnected contours. For materials, observe how light, texture, and edges behave. A texture brush cannot replace understanding the form being drawn.
Use a small, deliberate brush and layer system
Begin with a sketch brush, a painting brush, an eraser, and a color-selection tool. Learn brush size and opacity before exploring advanced controls. Add a different brush only when it helps with a task you can name.
Name layers for their purpose, such as sketch, lines, color, or background. Keep elements separate when doing so makes revision easier, but avoid unnecessary layers that make the project harder to navigate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Save and export with purpose
Keep the editable native project and make a separate export for sharing or delivery. Choose the format based on what the recipient needs: PNG for transparency or lossless image quality, JPEG for a widely supported flattened image when lossless preservation is not necessary, PDF for document-style distribution or print-house delivery, or PSD when another compatible workflow needs layers. Check requirements before sending or printing.

A four-week practice plan
| Week | Practice | Example outcome |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lines, circles, simple forms, and basic app controls. | Short pages of controlled marks and constructed forms. |
| 2 | Grayscale value studies and simple subjects. | Small studies that read clearly without relying on color. |
| 3 | Limited-palette color studies from observation or reference. | Studies that explore color and material relationships. |
| 4 | One small illustration from sketch through export. | A finished image and notes on what to practice next. |
Short, regular sessions and completed small studies give you useful feedback. This plan does not guarantee proficiency on a fixed schedule; progress depends on practice, experience, and feedback. Official learning materials such as the Procreate Beginners Series and Krita’s training resources can provide structured introductions.
Common problems and fixes
- “My lines feel awkward.” Simplify your brush choices and practice controlled marks. Try mouse or pen input to see which feels more comfortable.
- “My painting looks detailed but wrong.” Check the sketch, silhouette, proportions, and large value shapes before adding detail.
- “I cannot revise anything.” Use layers for important components and save the native project file.
- “I am overwhelmed by tools.” Return to a few basic tools and learn them through a small finished exercise.
- “My export is not right for its destination.” Check the recipient’s format, dimensions, transparency, and print requirements before exporting again.
- “I keep collecting brushes instead of improving.” Finish a study with a small set of brushes; add another only when you know why you need it.
A simple starting checklist
- Choose a small subject you can finish.
- Start with a device and app you already have, if possible.
- Practice a few basic tools and layer controls.
- Set up a canvas for its intended use.
- Sketch large shapes before details.
- Use layers where they make revision easier.
- Build color, value, and details in stages.
- Save the editable project file.
- Export and inspect a separate delivery copy.
- Write down one success and one next exercise.
Digital art becomes manageable when you treat it as a repeatable process: choose a subject, sketch, build, refine, save, and export. The best setup is one that helps you practice without distracting you from making the work.
FAQ
Do I need a drawing tablet to make digital art?
No. Krita supports mouse input as well as a graphic-tablet pen. A tablet is an option, not a prerequisite; use the input device you have and choose a pen tablet if it suits your workflow.
Recommended Free Tools
What software is good for a beginner?
Krita is a desktop painting option, while Procreate is an iPad app. Compare device compatibility, interface, and the kind of work you want to make. Neither is a universal best choice.
How should I set up my first canvas?
Choose dimensions for the image’s destination. For screen work, consider the intended platform; for print, follow the print provider’s requirements. Krita’s A4 at 300 ppi and RGB/8-bit example is not a universal setting.
What file format should I use?
Save the editable native project first. Export a separate copy: PNG can preserve transparency and lossless image quality, JPEG is a widely supported lossy flattened option, PDF can suit document-style distribution or print-house delivery, and PSD can preserve layers for compatible workflows.
How long does it take to learn digital art?
There is no fixed timeline. Practice basic forms, value, color, and complete small projects, then use what you learn to choose your next exercise.
