Nano Banana is Google’s Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, an image-generation and editing model announced in August 2025. It is not Nano Banana Pro: that is the separate Gemini 3 Pro Image model, announced in November 2025. Google’s current developer guide describes the original Nano Banana as a legacy model and recommends Nano Banana 2 Lite for new projects.
What is Nano Banana?
Nano Banana is the public brand for Gemini 2.5 Flash Image. Its API model code is gemini-2.5-flash-image. Google announced the model on August 26, 2025, with access through the Gemini API, Google AI Studio, and Vertex AI.
Google Product Manager Naina Raisinghani explained the naming distinction this way: “While the technical name was still officially called Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, the Nano Banana brand name stuck.”

| Nano Banana | Gemini 2.5 Flash Image | Original model, described as optimized for speed and efficiency; now identified as a legacy model. |
| Nano Banana Pro | Gemini 3 Pro Image | Separate model positioned for complex visual work, improved text rendering, and greater creative control. |
Pro is not a professional edition or upgrade label for Gemini 2.5 Flash Image. It is a different model in Google’s image-generation lineup.

Which model should you choose?
- For an existing integration: Gemini 2.5 Flash Image may remain relevant when you need to maintain a workflow already built around it. Check Google’s current model guide for lifecycle and access details.
- For a new project: Start with Nano Banana 2 Lite, which Google recommends as the migration path from the legacy original.
- For complex visual work: Consider Nano Banana Pro, which Google positions as its premium option for more demanding creative tasks.
What to keep in mind when editing images
Google described Gemini 2.5 Flash Image as capable of blending references and making targeted edits, but model outputs can vary. Review generated images carefully, especially when preserving a person’s likeness, product details, or text is important. Google also said generated and edited outputs include an invisible SynthID digital watermark; this is a provenance measure, not a rights clearance or a guarantee that content is error-free.
