Google’s upgraded AI image generator is Nano Banana 2, the consumer name for Gemini 3.1 Flash Image. Announced on February 26, 2026, it is now available in supported Gemini accounts and is designed for faster image generation, conversational editing, reference-image work, and more reliable text inside images. It does not replace every professional image or design tool, but it is a useful option for painters and other visual creators who want to develop concepts, compositions, mockups, or promotional graphics from natural-language instructions.
What Google launched
Nano Banana 2 is the latest broadly integrated image-generation model in Google’s Gemini ecosystem. Google describes it as combining capabilities associated with its higher-end Nano Banana Pro model with the speed of Gemini Flash. The model is available through selected Google products and services, including the Gemini app, Google Search AI Mode, Lens, AI Studio, the Gemini API, Google Cloud preview paths, and Flow. Availability depends on country, language, product, account type, age, and rollout status.
Google’s announcement describes improvements in speed, instruction following, real-world subject knowledge, text rendering, translation, localization, character consistency, local editing, and support for multiple reference images. Those are Google’s stated capabilities, not independent benchmark results, so important artwork, labels, diagrams, and commercial assets still require human review.

Google’s current API documentation treats Nano Banana models as native Gemini image-generation models. It also says Imagen models were deprecated and scheduled for shutdown on August 17, 2026. That means current coverage should not describe Imagen 4 as Google’s newest Gemini image-generation path.
What is new in Nano Banana 2?
- Faster generation and editing: Nano Banana 2 is positioned as the faster general-purpose option compared with a Pro-oriented workflow.
- Better instruction following: It is intended to handle detailed creative directions more reliably.
- Improved text rendering: Posters, signs, labels, diagrams, and social graphics may be more usable, although perfect typography is not guaranteed.
- Translation and localization: Google says the model can translate or localize text within images.
- Reference-image support: You can use uploaded images to guide a new composition, helping with products, people, clothing, objects, or visual style.
- More consistent subjects: Google says it has improved character and subject consistency across edits.
- Local edits: You can request changes to a specific part of an image rather than regenerating the entire concept.
- Diagrams and visualizations: The model can produce infographics, diagrams, and data visualizations, but factual content should be checked manually.
- Search grounding in supported workflows: Some model and API workflows can use grounding, though that does not make generated visual facts automatically accurate.
For painters, the practical difference is less about replacing a finished painting and more about shortening the concept-development loop. You can explore a composition, alter lighting or setting, compare palette directions, create a reference-board element, or mock up how a painting might look above a sofa before committing time to a canvas.
How to generate an image in Gemini
- Go to gemini.google.com and sign in.
- Open the sidebar.
- Select Images.
- Choose a template or enter your own prompt.
- Submit the request.
- Download the result or continue editing it conversationally.
The exact interface can vary by device, account, country, and rollout. If an Images tab is not shown, image generation may instead appear through the ordinary prompt interface.
How to edit an image
Gemini can edit an image it generated, an image you upload, or a composition based on several uploaded references. The documented desktop path is:
- Open Gemini and the sidebar.
- Select Library.
- Choose a previously generated image, or upload one.
- Click Chat beneath the image.
- Describe the change and submit it.
For reliable edits, state what must remain unchanged. For example: “Replace only the background. Preserve the product’s shape, logo placement, colors, and camera angle.” Make one small edit at a time instead of changing the pose, clothing, lighting, background, and perspective simultaneously.

When to use Nano Banana Pro
Eligible paid Gemini users can send a result to Nano Banana Pro without starting over:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Generate an image with Nano Banana 2 or Nano Banana 2 Lite.
- Open the More menu at the bottom-right of the image.
- Select Redo with Pro.
Google positions Nano Banana Pro as the better choice for complex instructions, detailed work, text-heavy images, infographics, stronger factual grounding, and more precise creative control. The trade-off is access, cost, and typically slower generation. For an artist, Pro is most useful when a draft composition is already right but the lettering, fine detail, or controlled revision needs another pass.
Is Nano Banana 2 free?
Image generation is available to signed-in Gemini users where the feature is supported, but “free” does not mean unlimited. Usage limits can vary by account, model, traffic, geography, and Google’s current rate-limit policy. Google does not provide one universal daily number that should be assumed for every user.
Google’s current Gemini Help documentation says:
- Users without an AI plan can download images at 1K resolution.
- Users with a Google AI plan can download images at 2K resolution.
- AI plans provide higher usage limits.
- Nano Banana Pro access in Gemini is associated with eligible paid access.
The current U.S. Google One plans page lists Google AI Plus at $9.99 per month with 2 TB of storage and Google AI Pro at $19.99 per month with 5 TB of storage. Google describes AI Pro as providing four-times-higher Gemini usage limits than users without an AI plan. Prices, benefits, and availability can differ by country and may change. The page also lists an Ultra tier, but its exact price should be checked at checkout rather than assumed from another market.

Nano Banana 2, Lite, or Pro?
Choose Nano Banana 2 when:
- You want the simplest Gemini-integrated workflow.
- You need conversational edits and multiple reference images.
- You want a balance between speed and quality.
- You are making concept art, social images, mockups, illustrations, or diagrams.
Choose Nano Banana 2 Lite when:
- Latency and API cost matter most.
- You are creating quick drafts or high-volume variations.
- 1K output is sufficient.
- You do not need extensive reference-image input or long, sequential editing.
Google describes Lite as the fastest and cheapest model in the family, but says it is not optimized for multiple reference inputs or multi-turn sequential editing.
Choose Nano Banana Pro when:
- Text accuracy matters more than speed.
- You need detailed infographics or marketing assets.
- You need more advanced instruction handling or factual grounding.
- You are willing to use a paid plan or the API.
How to write better prompts
A useful structure is:
Create a [type of image] showing [subject] in [setting].
Use [style, lighting, camera or design direction].
Keep [specific elements] consistent.
Include the exact text: “[text]”.
Use a [aspect ratio] composition.
Do not add [unwanted elements].
For example:
Create a 16:9 editorial illustration of a crowded city subway at rush hour.
Use a clean magazine style, muted blue and orange colors, and strong foreground depth.
Include the exact headline “THE FUTURE OF TRANSIT” in large, legible type.
Do not add any other words.
For a product reference:
Use the uploaded product photo as the reference. Replace the background with a bright home office,
preserve the product’s shape, logo placement, and colors, and create a realistic 4:5 social-commerce image.
Put exact text in quotation marks and describe its position, hierarchy, and size. When editing a painting reference, identify the elements that must remain unchanged: subject placement, palette, brushwork, horizon line, lighting direction, or crop. Upload reference images when identity, product shape, wardrobe, or composition matters.
Important limitations for painters and professional creators
Nano Banana 2 is an image generator and editor, not a substitute for a complete production workflow. Review the result before using it publicly or commercially.
- Typography: Improved text rendering is not perfect. Short text works better than dense copy. For final posters, labels, and gallery materials, add type in a design application when precision matters.
- Logos and trademarks: Do not assume that a generated logo, label, signature, or brand mark is exact.
- Consistency: Characters and products can change between edits. Use references, make small revisions, and avoid changing too many variables at once.
- Facts: Charts, maps, technical drawings, measurements, and labels may contain plausible-looking errors.
- Repeatability: It does not provide guaranteed pixel-level reproduction, layered source files, or a fully editable vector structure.
- Color management: A generated image is not a replacement for professional color checking, print preparation, or proofing.
- Privacy and rights: Upload only images you are entitled to use, and consider privacy, model-release, copyright, and trademark issues before using generated or edited work commercially.
- Offline use: Gemini’s cloud workflow is not a fully local or offline image-generation tool.
For painters, generated images are best treated as exploratory references, not unquestioned visual authority. A model can suggest an interesting arrangement of figures or light while still getting anatomy, perspective, cultural details, or material behavior wrong.
Rank #4
- 8,192 levels of pressure sensitivity, 3 side switches
- State of the Art Pen Technology: 3rd generation Wacom Pen technology
- Perfect Custom Fit: Customizations for weight balance, different grips or no-side-switch included
- Tilt recognition: Improved tilt 60 degrees
- Super Responsive: The Pro Pen 3 senses every nuance and every change, so even the lightest of touches will appear on the screen
What if the Images option is missing?
Try these checks:
- Confirm that you are signed in to Gemini.
- Try both the web app and the mobile app.
- Check whether your country and language support the feature.
- Try a personal account if you are using a school, work, or other managed account.
- Use a simple test prompt such as “Create an image of a red bicycle.”
- Check whether image generation is available through the ordinary prompt interface instead of a separate Images tab.
A paid plan can raise limits, but it does not guarantee access when an account, product, age, language, or regional restriction applies.
Gemini app resolution versus API resolution
Do not confuse consumer downloads with developer model capabilities. Google’s Gemini Help page describes 1K downloads without an AI plan and 2K downloads with a Google AI plan. Separately, the Gemini API documentation describes 1K, 2K, and 4K output options for Gemini 3 image models; Nano Banana 2 Lite is limited to 1K.
In other words, seeing 4K in API documentation does not mean that every Gemini app user can download a 4K file. App entitlements, API configuration, account limits, and model availability are separate matters.
Using Nano Banana 2 through the API
The primary API model identifier is:
gemini-3.1-flash-image
Google’s current example using the Google GenAI SDK is:
Recommended Free Tools
from google import genai
import base64
client = genai.Client()
interaction = client.interactions.create(
model="gemini-3.1-flash-image",
input="Create a picture of a nano banana dish in a fancy restaurant with a Gemini theme",
)
with open("generated_image.png", "wb") as f:
f.write(base64.b64decode(interaction.output_image.data))
Image-generation and editing requests can also specify settings such as:

The API is the more appropriate route for developers building automated workflows, batch generation, or custom applications. It is not automatically the best route for a painter who simply wants to explore a composition in conversation.
Availability, age, and account restrictions
Google says image generation requires users to be at least 13, or the applicable age in their country. Image editing requires users to be 18 or older. School and managed accounts may have additional restrictions.
Google Photos-connected image editing is limited to users 18 and older in the United States and requires a personal Google account. Some connected Photos features may not be available in every U.S. region. More generally, Google warns that Gemini image features depend on supported countries and languages.

Should you use Nano Banana 2?
Nano Banana 2 is a strong fit if you already use Gemini and want a fast, conversational way to create or revise visual ideas. It is especially practical for concept development, reference exploration, product mockups, social graphics, and images that benefit from several visual inputs.
It is not a complete replacement for painting software, layout tools, retouching applications, or professional production pipelines. If exact typography, brand fidelity, repeatable output, factual diagrams, layered files, or print color control matters, use Gemini as an early-stage generator or assistant and complete the work in a tool designed for final production.
For most Gemini users, the sensible starting point is Nano Banana 2. Move to Lite when speed and cost dominate, and use Redo with Pro when a promising draft needs more detail, better control, or stronger text handling.
