“Googly Eyes Gardener” is an Saturday Night Live sketch starring Christopher Walken as a gardener who fears plants and tries to make them easier to trust by sticking googly eyes on them. The sketch aired during Walken’s April 5, 2008 episode, and writer Eric Kenward later traced its premise to his grandmother’s cactuses.
What happens in the Googly Eyes Gardener sketch?
Walken’s character explains that cactuses are dangerous because they can prick him. His solution is to give them googly eyes: he believes looking into someone’s eyes helps you know where you stand, while plants normally have none. The bit extends the same logic to ferns, turning an ordinary craft prop into a way for the nervous gardener to imagine a relationship with plants.
The premise is played for comedy, not offered as gardening or plant-safety advice. For the sketch itself, NBC/SNL’s official clip page is titled “Googly Eyes Gardener”. The clip is also linked from The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast episode page.
Who wrote it, and where did the idea come from?
Sketchwriter Eric Kenward described the origin in a 2024 retrospective on The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast. His grandmother put googly eyes on her cactuses. Kenward wondered why people did that and imagined they might be making plants that look dangerous seem cute or relatable. He also recalled wanting reaction shots from things that could not react.
As Kenward put it in the episode, “This is something my grandma Kenward used to really do.” The podcast transcript also renders the character’s line as: “Normally, plants don’t have eyes, so it’s hard for me to trust them. Hence, googly eyes.” That wording is from the third-party podcast transcript, not an independently verified official script.
