“Posable Star Wars droid papercraft” can mean very different projects: a standing R2-D2 display model, a small BB-8 paper toy, or an Imperial Probe Droid marionette with moving parts. The title alone does not identify one exact template, so choose the design first and use its own PDF or page for the build sequence. The examples below show how to match a project to your printer, paper, tools, and experience.
Choose the droid and build style before printing
These templates are not interchangeable. Their page counts, materials, and assembly instructions belong to their respective projects; do not combine one model’s parts with another model’s directions.
| Template | Format and build | Paper and tools | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disney/Lucasfilm R2-D2 Papercraft | Five-page PDF with numbered tabs; a standing model assembled from a dome, body, and legs, with optional holographic projectors. | The instructions allow regular paper or cardstock. Cut the pieces, fold dashed lines, and attach tabs with glue or double-sided tape. | A display-style build for someone comfortable assembling several labeled parts. |
| Fold Up Toys Star Wars BB-8 | Publisher describes a two-piece paper toy on one A4 page. | Fold Up Toys recommends 250 gsm cardstock for best results and says its models should also work on standard A4 printer paper. Scissors, optional scoring, and glue are described. | A compact project with fewer pieces and a stated A4-page format. |
| Disney/Lucasfilm Imperial Probe Droid Marionette Craft Template | An articulated marionette rather than a simple standing paper figure. | The template specifies three 12-by-12-inch pieces of heavy cardstock or thin chipboard and lists additional supplies, including string and dowels. It also involves cutting and hot-melt glue. | An elaborate moving build for adults or projects with adult supervision. |
For a conventional build-it-yourself alternative rather than a printable craft, LEGO lists its 2024 Creative Play Droid Builder (set 75392) as a 1,186-piece set for ages 9 and up. It is a building toy, not a papercraft template: LEGO building instructions for set 75392.

Prepare the printer, paper, and work surface
Start with the selected template’s stated paper size and material. The BB-8 page specifies A4 and gives its own 250 gsm recommendation; the R2-D2 instructions permit either regular paper or cardstock. Those directions are model-specific, not a universal paper-weight rule. If your printer cannot feed the chosen cardstock reliably, use paper the printer accepts and handle the finished pieces carefully.
- Print at the template’s intended page size; avoid “fit to page” or other scaling unless the instructions allow it, because changing scale can affect how parts meet.
- Check that all pages or pieces printed and that cut, fold, and tab markings are legible before cutting.
- Keep a cutting mat and straightedge available if the design calls for knife work. Use scissors for cuts that can be made safely that way.
- Have the specified adhesive ready. Glue or double-sided tape suits the R2-D2 instructions; the more involved marionette template lists hot-melt glue.
Build from the template’s own cut, fold, and glue directions
Most paper models distinguish the outer cut lines from fold lines, often shown as dashed marks. Read the chosen project’s diagram before cutting so you can tell which lines define the shape and which lines are only creases. The following outline describes the general workflow; the template’s numbered parts and order take precedence.
Rank #2
- Print: Print the full template at the specified paper size and inspect the pages for missing or faint markings.
- Cut: Cut around the outlines. For the R2-D2 PDF, keep the numbered parts and tabs identifiable as you work.
- Fold: Fold the indicated lines, not the outer cut lines. Some BB-8 builders may score folds first for cleaner creases; do so only if appropriate for the paper and safe for the person building.
- Assemble: Apply the adhesive to the marked tabs and join the parts in the sequence shown by the template. Avoid substituting pieces or instructions from another droid design.
- Finish and check: Let adhesive set as directed, then check that the model’s parts are attached and aligned. For the R2-D2 model, the instructions assemble the dome and body before the legs and optional holographic projectors; they say the model should stand when the legs are aligned and attached as directed.
Use tools and supervision appropriate to the project
For a simple paper toy, scissors, paper, and the adhesive named by the template may be enough. A craft knife can help with detailed cutouts, and some builders score folds with a craft knife or an empty ballpoint pen, but these are optional, template-dependent techniques—not requirements for every model. Follow the chosen project’s safety notes and use a cutting surface rather than cutting directly on a table.
The Imperial Probe Droid marionette is a more demanding exception: its template calls for heavy cardstock or thin chipboard, several additional components, and methods such as hot-melt gluing and spray painting. The Disney/Lucasfilm template states, “Cutting, hot-melt gluing, and spray painting is intended for adults only.” Younger builders should get adult help with craft knives or other sharp tools, and adults should handle the template’s specified hot-melt glue and spray-paint steps.
