A graduation invitation should tell guests who is graduating, what they are invited to, when and where it happens, and how to RSVP. For most events, send invitations three to six weeks ahead; choose paper for a formal keepsake and digital delivery when speed and response tracking matter most.
What to write on a graduation invitation
Make the essential details easy to find. Include:
- The graduate’s full name and, if useful, school, degree, or class year.
- Whether the invitation is for a commencement ceremony, a graduation party, or both.
- The event date and start time. For an open house, give the full arrival window.
- The venue name and street address.
- An RSVP method and deadline, such as a phone number, email address, or online form.
Add ceremony-specific information, dress guidance, parking or directions, and accessibility details when guests need them. Keep the main invitation focused on the event. Include a gift instruction only if there is a clear, courteous reason to do so.

If guests are invited to commencement as well, state that separately and include the ceremony’s time, location, and any relevant attendance details. For a casual open house, make clear that guests may drop in during the stated hours.
When to send graduation invitations
Shutterfly Community’s guidance is to send typical graduation invitations three to six weeks before the event. Its more specific guidance is at least six weeks for out-of-town guests and three to four weeks when most guests are local (Shutterfly graduation invitation wording). Emily Post gives a two-to-six-week window for graduation-party invitations (Emily Post invitation etiquette).

Use the longer end of the range if guests need to travel or arrange their schedules; use the shorter local guideline when the gathering is informal and nearby. Set an RSVP deadline early enough to plan food and seating, and make sure it falls before the date you need a final headcount.
Does a graduation party invitation need an RSVP?
Yes, an RSVP request is useful for a party because it gives the host an attendance estimate for food, seating, and space. Include both the response method and a deadline. Invitation or announcement: what is the difference?
An invitation asks someone to attend an event and therefore needs practical details such as the date, time, place, and RSVP instructions. A graduation announcement shares the news of the graduate’s achievement; it does not necessarily invite the recipient to a ceremony or party. Emily Post distinguishes the purposes this way: invitations seek attendance, while announcements spread the news after graduation (Emily Post invitation etiquette).
