Aurora’s December 9, 2024 launch gallery showed the kinds of images xAI chose to demonstrate for Grok: an SR-71 Blackbird against an abstract sky, an astronaut on an alien planet, and a dog drinking tea in a library, among others. Today’s Grok Imagine is the product to evaluate for current image creation and editing, with documented video workflows too. These are vendor examples and product descriptions—not a controlled comparison proving which generation makes better images.

What are Grok 2 Aurora’s best image-generation examples?
xAI introduced Aurora as an autoregressive image-generation model for the X platform. Its launch announcement described support for image inputs as inspiration or for direct editing. The examples below are selected and captioned by xAI, so they show what the company chose to showcase, not typical results or an independent ranking.
| xAI launch example | What it demonstrates |
|---|---|
| SR-71 Blackbird against an abstract sky | A recognizable aircraft placed in a stylized setting |
| Astronaut on an alien planet | A science-fiction subject and environment |
| Volcano surrounded by ice | An unusual contrast of landscape elements |
| Cat in a Van Gogh-inspired time-chamber scene | A named artistic inspiration combined with a fantastical setting |
| Origami Cybertruck | A familiar vehicle rendered as a folded-paper subject |
| Cherry blossoms at sunset | A familiar nature scene and lighting mood |
| Geometric-shape sketch | A sketch-like treatment of geometric forms |
| Dog drinking tea in a library | An animal in a whimsical human setting |
| Close-up of a guitar-playing hand | A detailed close-up of a hand interacting with an instrument |
These examples are useful for understanding Aurora’s range of subjects and styles. The announcement does not provide a prompt-matched test against today’s Imagine models, nor does it establish repeatability, text accuracy, or average output quality.

What is the difference between Aurora and Grok Imagine?
Aurora is the historical image model xAI announced in December 2024. Grok Imagine is the current product family described in xAI’s materials, covering image generation and editing as well as video generation and editing. Shared branding does not establish a direct architecture lineage between Aurora and current Imagine models.
| Aspect | Aurora launch period | Current Grok Imagine materials |
|---|---|---|
| Examples and scope | xAI’s December 2024 gallery featured still-image examples. | Materials describe image and video creation and editing. |
| Image input and editing | xAI said users could provide images for inspiration or direct editing. | xAI documents editing workflows, including multiple reference images and local-edit features. |
| Models named in documentation | Aurora was announced as a new image-generation model. | Current documentation names grok-imagine-image-2.0 and grok-imagine-video-1.5. |
| Quality comparison | No controlled comparison in this research. | No controlled, prompt-matched comparison in this research. |
xAI describes Image 2.0 as generally available in Quality Mode on grok.com/imagine and its iOS and Android apps. Its listed features include local edits, segmentation, background removal, multi-reference editing, and smart resizing. These are vendor descriptions of product capabilities, not independent performance findings.
xAI says its Image 2.0 workflow can use up to five input images in one multi-reference editing generation. That describes a documented capability; it does not mean every edit preserves all requested details reliably.
How to judge the examples fairly
When looking at a gallery or testing a current product, separate what the image visibly shows from what the vendor says the model can do. Useful comparison criteria include:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Visual style and realism: Is the result photographic, illustrative, or stylized, and does it fit the example?
- Prompt-detail adherence: Are the requested subjects, actions, and composition visible?
- Text and layout: If the example includes lettering, is it legible and accurate?
- Image input and editing: Is it a new image, an edit, or a result guided by reference images?
- Consistency across revisions: Does the result preserve the elements the user wanted to keep?
- Modality: Is the example a still image, an edited image, or generated video?
For a fair direct comparison, use the same prompt and reference material, document the product and model shown, and compare multiple outputs. This dossier contains no hands-on tests, so the examples here should not be read as a verdict that one system performs better.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can Grok Imagine edit images or make videos?
Yes. xAI’s current Imagine materials describe image generation and editing, plus video generation and editing. Its documentation names grok-imagine-image-2.0 for images and grok-imagine-video-1.5 for video; video creation can use text or image references. Check the live product and documentation for current availability and limits.
Access details can vary by date, region, and route. xAI described Image 2.0 availability in its apps, while the Associated Press separately reported a paying-subscriber restriction at the time of its report. That report is dated evidence, not a guarantee of current access for every account or country.

API pricing and access
API prices are not the same as consumer app subscription prices and can change. xAI’s documentation accessed October 7, 2026 listed $0.04 per image for Image 2.0 editing and $0.08 per second for Imagine Video 1.5. The overview also describes image output starting at $0.02 per image for a model, with higher-quality and 2K outputs priced separately. Verify live terms before budgeting or publishing a price comparison.

FAQ
Was Aurora the same thing as Grok 2?
No. xAI announced Aurora as an image-generation model integrated with the Grok experience. The names describe related parts of the product rollout, not proof that Aurora and the Grok 2 language-and-vision model were one identical model.
Are the Aurora examples independent test results?
No. They are examples selected and captioned by xAI in its launch announcement. They illustrate the company’s demonstrations, not typical output quality or a controlled benchmark.
Does current Grok Imagine have better image quality than Aurora?
The sources in this research do not establish that with an apples-to-apples test. They document current Imagine features and Aurora’s launch examples, but not a controlled quality comparison.
Can I use the Aurora examples to predict what Grok Imagine will produce?
Not reliably. Aurora’s gallery documents the 2024 launch period; current Imagine uses newer named models and documents additional editing and video workflows. Test the current product for the task you need.
Bottom line
Aurora’s launch gallery is a useful historical snapshot of xAI’s 2024 image-generation demonstrations, from fantastical scenes to stylized everyday subjects. For present-day creation, editing, or video workflows, evaluate current Grok Imagine directly—and treat vendor examples and capability claims as demonstrations, not independent proof of quality.
