Qwen-Image-2512 is a credible open-weight alternative to Google’s Nano Banana Pro, but the available evidence does not establish that it matches Google’s image quality overall. Qwen reports improvements in realism, natural detail and text rendering; a fair answer requires a controlled comparison of the exact models and workflows.

Qwen offers downloadable weights under Apache 2.0 and options for hosted or local use. Nano Banana Pro, also known as Gemini 3 Pro Image, is Google’s hosted image-generation and editing model. The practical choice depends on whether you value local control or an integrated managed service, as well as how each performs on your specific tasks.

What Qwen-Image-2512 actually is

Qwen-Image-2512 is a December 2025 update to Qwen’s text-to-image model, following its August release. The Qwen team says the update improves three areas:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Human realism: more realistic people and facial detail.
  • Natural detail: finer detail in subjects such as landscapes and animal fur.
  • Text rendering: improved text and compositions that combine typography with imagery.

These are Qwen’s release claims, illustrated against its earlier Qwen-Image model; they are not independent validation against Nano Banana Pro. Qwen also reports “over 10,000 rounds of blind model evaluations” and describes the model as highly competitive with closed-source models. The cited model-card passage does not provide a shared test protocol or a comparable Nano Banana Pro result, so this claim does not establish parity.

What Nano Banana Pro offers

Nano Banana Pro is Google’s public name for Gemini 3 Pro Image, announced on November 20, 2025. Google describes it as a model for image generation and editing, with text rendering, world knowledge, localized edits and creative controls.

Google’s official materials describe capabilities including:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Text-to-image generation and image editing.
  • Multilingual text rendering and the creation of diagrams or infographics using world knowledge.
  • Localized edits and controls for elements such as lighting, focus and color.
  • Resolution options up to 4K in supported contexts.

Availability and resolution depend on the Google product and offering. In a May 28, 2026 announcement about Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, Google Cloud said 1K and 2K outputs were generally available and 4K remained in preview for that offering. Do not assume that status applies to every Google product. Google also warns that generated spelling, fine detail and factual content can be wrong.

Is Qwen-Image-2512 really open source?

A precise description is that Qwen-Image-2512 is an open-weight model with downloadable weights under Apache-2.0, as listed on its official model card. The release supports local inference, but the availability of weights alone does not establish that the training data, data provenance, training code and infrastructure are all available.

How to try Qwen-Image-2512

Use a hosted interface

Qwen’s model card links to hosted inference and demos. Hosted services may impose quotas, availability restrictions or safety systems, and their settings may differ from a local run. An image produced by a host may therefore differ from one produced directly with the public weights.

Run it locally

The model card documents a Diffusers inference route and links to local applications. Follow its current instructions for the environment and device you plan to use, since library versions and setup details can change.

  1. Review the current model card and license.
  2. Choose a supported inference route, such as Diffusers or a linked local application.
  3. Install the required software and model files using the current instructions.
  4. Run a prompt and check memory use, output quality and compatibility in your setup.

The model card shows CUDA in its sample setup and includes a CPU fallback. It does not establish a universal minimum GPU specification, and local inference may require substantial resources.

Hardware: downloadable does not mean lightweight

Qwen’s model card supports discussing local inference but does not establish a universal minimum GPU or VRAM requirement. Actual resource use depends on the implementation, precision, offloading, resolution, batch size and hardware. Check the current model-card instructions and test your intended setup before planning a deployment.

Local operation also has practical costs: model storage, hardware or cloud compute, electricity and maintenance. A hosted route can avoid managing the model files and inference environment, but comes with the host’s access rules and processing arrangements.

Where the quality comparison matters

The official sources reviewed do not establish a controlled, common-protocol head-to-head test between these exact systems. Qwen’s reported blind evaluations and Google’s benchmark charts have different provenance; neither alone proves overall parity. Compare the models on the tasks that matter to you.

Photorealistic portraits

Check facial detail, skin texture, teeth, hands, lighting and background coherence. Qwen claims stronger human realism in the 2512 update. Google’s materials position Nano Banana Pro as a high-fidelity image model, but also warn that small faces and fine details can be problematic.

Text inside images

Test exact spelling, multilingual text, typography, labels, menus, posters and infographics. Both vendors emphasize text rendering, but a short title is a simpler test than dense text in a controlled layout. Google specifically advises checking generated text for errors.

Complex compositions

Ask for a precise number of objects, their relative positions, materials, camera angles and lighting. Judge whether the result follows the relationships, not just whether it looks attractive.

Editing and consistency

Test background replacement, object removal, local edits, style changes, identity preservation and multi-turn revisions. Nano Banana Pro is explicitly positioned for image editing. Qwen-Image-2512’s model card focuses on text-to-image generation, so identify the specific Qwen tool or pipeline if you compare editing.

Current information

For images involving a current product, place, event, statistic or public figure, check whether the chosen workflow uses current information or only what is supplied in the prompt. Do not assume local Qwen inference has a live web connection; verify the capabilities of the specific Google product and workflow as well.

How to run a fair comparison

A useful side-by-side test controls the prompt, aspect ratio, target resolution, number of attempts, editing instructions and selection rules. Record the exact model version and access path, retain failures as well as successes, and use blind judging where feasible.

  1. Compare prompt adherence and composition.
  2. Check anatomy, facial consistency, fine textures and natural detail.
  3. Test spelling and layout in text-heavy images.
  4. Compare editing consistency and reference preservation.
  5. Record practical workflow factors such as latency, access, cost and local-compute burden.

This dossier contains no first-hand test results. A few selected screenshots can illustrate a result, but cannot establish general superiority.
