Gudrun Erla’s “Rays of Friendship” is a collaborative quilt made for a 2013 No-Rules Round Robin Challenge—not a single-author commercial pattern. Its rectangular center, fan shapes cut with a 15° ruler, and modern scalloped edge distinguish it from a conventional square medallion quilt.

What is Gudrun Erla’s Round Robin quilt?

American Patchwork & Quilting featured the quilt on November 13, 2013, as part of a challenge among four designers: Gudrun Erla, Kari Carr, Terri Degenkolb, and Terry Atkinson. In a round robin, participants build on a shared quilt top in successive rounds. Here, the designers worked without a fixed set of rules, and the finished quilt was named “Rays of Friendship.” Read the challenge feature.

How was “Rays of Friendship” made?

Each designer added a distinct treatment, so the quilt’s final look reflects contributions across four rounds rather than one continuous plan.

  1. Round 1 — Gudrun Erla: Gudrun began with the challenge’s only rectangular center and cut fan pieces using a 15° ruler. The feature states, “Gudrun used a 15° ruler to cut pieces for the fans.” See Gudrun’s round.
  2. Round 2 — Kari Carr: Kari added three rows of piping to a wavy border and finished its corners with exclamation points. See the border details.
  3. Round 3 — Terri Degenkolb: Terri developed the exclamation-point motif into jacks—the children’s game—and added polka dots. See Terri’s additions.
  4. Round 4 — Terry Atkinson: Terry experimented with the 15° ruler, adding fan pieces at the corners and at the centers of the scalloped sides. See Terry’s round.

What makes the finished quilt distinctive?

The successive rounds culminated in a modern scalloped edge, described in the feature as the most unique final shape among the challenge quilts. Gudrun labeled the back with all four designers’ names and called the quilt “Rays of Friendship.” Those details—the unusual rectangular start, fan accents, playful motifs, and scalloped outline—identify this particular collaborative project. View the finished quilt.

Can you make the quilt from the feature?

The feature documents the design and the contributors’ choices, but it does not provide a complete reproduction pattern. It gives no finished dimensions, fabric yardage, cutting chart, or named brand or model for the 15° ruler. A 15-degree quilting ruler is the tool explicitly associated with cutting the fan pieces; the feature does not establish a particular product to buy.

That makes the article useful as a record of the quilt’s construction and as inspiration for a round-robin design, but not as a step-by-step pattern with quantities. To recreate the look, a quilter would need to develop or source the missing measurements and construction instructions rather than infer them from the feature.
