For a first hand-pieced quilt, choose a small project with manageable shapes, such as a simple block or wall hanging. For English paper piecing (EPP), try a small hexagon flower; check the pattern’s instructions first, because traditional hand piecing, EPP, and foundation paper piecing are different methods.
Start with the right kind of hand piecing
Traditional hand piecing joins fabric patches directly by hand. EPP uses paper templates to prepare fabric shapes before joining them, while foundation paper piecing uses a printed foundation and is commonly sewn by machine. Choose a pattern based on its instructions rather than assuming that “paper piecing” means EPP.

A simple hand-pieced block or small wall hanging is a low-commitment way to practice marking seam lines, sewing, and joining patches. Choose a pattern with a manageable number of straightforward shapes, and make one block before deciding whether to expand it into a larger project.
Hexagon flowers for EPP
A hexagon flower is a concrete first EPP motif. Hexagons are used in EPP alongside shapes such as diamonds, baby blocks, and stars. A small flower lets you learn the preparation and joining process without beginning with a large quilt.

Other EPP pattern ideas
After trying a repeated shape, look for a pattern whose diagrams clearly explain its templates, preparation, and joining. More involved patterns with several shapes or precise geometric arrangements may suit someone who wants to spend more time preparing and organizing pieces. Start with a small section to see how the method feels before taking on a larger design.
How to choose the right pattern
Consider whether the pattern uses paper templates, how it handles angles and repeated shapes, whether pieces are prepared before joining, and whether its instructions call for hand or machine sewing. Also consider how portable the work should be and which tools the pattern requires.

Supplies for hand-pieced quilts
For traditional hand piecing
- Fabric suitable for the pattern.
- A ruler and fabric-marking tool if the pattern calls for marked seam lines.
- A hand-sewing needle and thread.
- Small scissors or thread snips.
For EPP
- Fabric and paper templates in the shape and size specified by the pattern.
- A hand-sewing needle and neutral thread.
- Scissors or cutting tools for preparing fabric pieces.
- Optional pins, a thimble, or a needle threader.
- Optional glue for preparing pieces, if compatible with the pattern’s instructions.
For EPP, fabric can be secured around paper shapes by thread tacking or by a glue-based method; follow the pattern’s instructions. The paper supports the fabric during preparation and joining. Cutting aids, such as rotary tools, a rotating mat, or acrylic templates, may help with particular designs, but are not prerequisites for every project.
If you choose a beginner kit, check its contents rather than assuming it includes every supply you need. Kits vary; check for the papers, fabric, instructions, and sewing supplies required by your chosen pattern. You can also gather the basic materials separately.

A simple EPP hexagon workflow
- Place a paper hexagon on the fabric and cut around it, leaving a seam allowance as specified by the instructions.
- Fold the fabric over the paper edges and secure it using the pattern’s preparation method, such as thread tacking or glue.
- Prepare the neighboring shapes in the same way.
- Align two prepared shapes and whipstitch their folded fabric edges together.
- Keep the paper in a shape until its sides are sewn, then remove it as directed by the pattern.
Paper templates can be reused several times, so a small set may be enough to prepare pieces for a project. The number of papers and the preparation details depend on the pattern.
