To draw a regular hexagon in AutoCAD, type POLYGON, enter 6 for the number of sides, and choose a construction method. Use Inscribed when you know the center-to-vertex distance, Circumscribed when you know the center-to-side distance, or Edge when you know the endpoints of one side.

Command-line steps

  1. Type POLYGON at the command line and press Enter.
  2. Enter 6 for the number of sides and press Enter.
  3. Specify the center point, or enter E to use the Edge method.
  4. For a center-based polygon, enter I for Inscribed in circle or C for Circumscribed about circle.
  5. Enter the radius, or pick a point to define it. If you chose Edge, specify the two endpoints of the first side.

Autodesk describes POLYGON as creating an “equilateral closed polyline.”

Which hexagon method should you use?

Method Use it when you know What you define
Inscribed The center-to-vertex distance A radius from the center to a vertex; all six vertices lie on the construction circle.
Circumscribed The center-to-side-midpoint distance A radius from the center to the midpoint of a side; the sides touch the construction circle.
Edge The endpoints of one side The first and second endpoints of the edge; AutoCAD constructs the polygon from them.

Control the hexagon’s orientation

When you pick the radius point with the pointing device, that point controls both size and rotation. When you type the radius, Autodesk notes that the bottom edge is drawn at the current snap rotation angle.

FAQ

What is the quickest way to draw a hexagon in AutoCAD?

Type POLYGON, enter 6, specify the center, then choose Inscribed or Circumscribed and provide the radius. Choose Edge instead if you want to define the endpoints of one side directly.

What is the difference between an inscribed and circumscribed hexagon?

For an inscribed hexagon, the radius runs from the center to a vertex. For a circumscribed hexagon, it runs from the center to the midpoint of a side.

How do I draw a hexagon using two known points?

Choose the Edge method and specify the two points as the endpoints of one side.
