Windows 11 Paint’s new Project feature is useful, but its Photoshop comparison needs a qualification. Paint can save an editable work-in-progress as a native .paint project, letting you reopen it later instead of continuing from a flattened PNG or JPEG. It also adds opacity controls for the Pencil and Brush tools.
That makes Paint better for sketches, annotations, schoolwork, mockups, and lightweight digital art. It does not make Paint a Photoshop replacement: .paint is a Paint working file, not a Photoshop-compatible .PSD, and Microsoft has not published evidence that it supports Photoshop’s broader editing ecosystem.
What Paint Project files do
A .paint file is intended to preserve an editable Paint project. Instead of exporting an unfinished composition as an image and losing the ability to continue working on it naturally, you can save the project and return to it in Paint later.
That solves a basic but important problem. A PNG or JPEG is generally a finished, shareable image. A .paint file is the working master you keep while a project is still changing.

Microsoft introduced the feature in Paint version 11.2508.361.0, announced on September 17, 2025. The company described it as a way to save a creation as an editable Paint project and reopen it later to continue from where you stopped. Microsoft’s announcement also introduced the new Pencil and Brush opacity control.
How to save a .paint project
- Open Paint and create a new image or open an existing one.
- Open the File menu.
- Select Save as project.
- Choose a folder and filename in File Explorer.
- Save the file with the
.paintextension.
To reopen it, double-click the file in File Explorer or open Paint and use its open command to select the project. The intended result is that Paint reopens the editable project rather than treating it like an ordinary flattened image.
Microsoft may adjust menu labels between builds, particularly while the feature is being distributed through preview channels. If you do not see Save as project, check your Paint app version and rollout channel before assuming the feature is missing from your installation permanently.

Use two files:
.paint: the editable working master.- PNG, JPEG, or another export: the copy you share, upload, print, or insert into another application.
Do not delete the project after exporting an image. If you later need to change a color, move an element, or continue developing the artwork, the .paint file is the copy you need.

For a practical check, create a composition with a background and several separate visual elements, save it with File → Save as project, close Paint, and reopen the file. Confirm that Paint opens the project and that the saved work remains editable in the way your installed build supports. Export a separate PNG to test the sharing side of the workflow.
What the opacity slider adds
When the Pencil or Brush tool is selected, Paint displays an opacity control on the left side of the canvas. Lower opacity makes new strokes more transparent, allowing color to build up through repeated passes.
This is useful for:
- Creating a light sketch underlay.
- Building shadows gradually.
- Adding translucent highlights.
- Making annotations less visually dominant.
- Layering strokes to suggest softer color transitions.
Microsoft’s example uses opacity at approximately 40 percent, but that is only an illustration of the control—not a universal recommended setting. The documented scope is the Pencil and Brush tools; it should not be assumed that every Paint tool responds to the same slider.

The project-file feature and opacity control address different needs. Project files improve how you save and resume work. Opacity improves how you draw and shade inside the canvas.

Is .paint the same as Photoshop’s .PSD?
No. The formats are similar only in the broad sense that both are intended to keep an editable project rather than just a flattened image.
| Capability | Paint .paint |
Photoshop .PSD |
|---|---|---|
| Editable project workflow | Yes, in Paint | Yes, in Photoshop |
| Native cross-editor compatibility | Not established | Supported across a broad professional ecosystem |
| Basic project or layer state | Editable project behavior is confirmed; detailed layer behavior should be verified in the installed build | Yes, with extensive layer features |
| Smart objects and advanced masks | Do not assume support | Yes |
| Professional color-management workflow | Not established | Yes |
| Built into supported Windows installations | Paint is a Windows utility | No |
| Best use | Casual and lightweight editing | Professional and advanced editing |
Independent hands-on coverage describes Paint’s project system as much simpler than Photoshop’s. It also discusses project and export behavior, but that reporting should not be expanded into claims about a complete, documented file specification. Windows Latest’s hands-on report describes layer-related project behavior, but Microsoft’s announcement uses the broader term “editable Paint project file” and does not publish a technical specification.
What is not established about the format
There is no basis here for claiming that .paint is an open standard, a ZIP archive, an XML document, or any other particular type of container. Nor should you assume that Photoshop, Paint.NET, Krita, or Affinity can open it.

Do not describe the feature as fully “non-destructive editing” without qualification. A saved editable project is useful, but that phrase can imply Photoshop-style masks, adjustment layers, smart objects, and reversible effects that Paint has not been shown to provide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Availability: Insider rollout first
The feature was initially rolled out to the Canary and Dev Windows Insider Channels with Paint version 11.2508.361.0 on September 17, 2025. A September 24 update said the features were also rolling out to the Beta and Release Preview Channels.
That rollout history does not prove that every stable Windows 11 installation has the feature. Availability may depend on the Windows 11 build, Paint app version, Insider channel, region, and Microsoft’s staged distribution. If Save as project is absent, update Paint through the Microsoft Store where applicable and check Microsoft’s current Windows Insider information rather than changing the file extension manually.

Who should use .paint?
It is a good fit for
- Quick sketches and digital painting studies.
- Annotations and simple diagrams.
- School projects and classroom work.
- Lightweight social graphics and mockups.
- Users who want a free Windows tool with a save-and-resume workflow.
- Projects that will be edited only in a compatible Paint installation.
It is a poor fit for
- Photoshop-compatible delivery.
- Professional color management or prepress.
- Smart objects, advanced masks, adjustment layers, or sophisticated blend modes.
- Animation or complex illustration workflows.
- Collaborative editing and formal version history.
- Long-term archival where a documented, broadly supported format is required.
When Paint is not enough
Paint.NET is a natural Windows-focused step up for users who like a relatively lightweight raster editor but need more depth than Paint.
Krita is better suited to serious digital painting, illustration, brush-heavy work, and users who want a free, open-source creative application.
Photoshop remains the stronger choice for professional compositing, PSD workflows, masks, smart objects, advanced effects, and a large plug-in ecosystem.
Affinity is another option for users seeking a more capable desktop creative suite without relying on Paint’s minimal toolset. Current pricing and licensing terms should be checked on each vendor’s official website.
Verdict
Paint’s .paint Project files are a meaningful workflow improvement. They let users keep an editable Paint project instead of repeatedly saving over a flattened image, and the new Pencil and Brush opacity control makes simple shading and translucent marks more practical.
The Photoshop comparison should stay narrow. Paint now has a native editable project workflow; it has not acquired Photoshop’s file interoperability, advanced compositing model, professional color tools, or wider ecosystem. Stay with Paint for simple work that needs to be resumed later. Choose a fuller editor when the project must move between applications or depends on advanced, professional features.
