The Hearts-on-a-String Banner is a sewn, five-flag fabric decoration with a published finished size of 7½ × 41½ inches. Its pattern uses red and pink pieced hearts, white-print accents, and a folded fabric binding; if you want a no-sew version instead, a separate paper-and-jute garland is a simpler alternative.
What the Hearts-on-a-String pattern makes
The pattern creates five individual heart flags, each listed as a 6 × 7½-inch finished block. The flags are spaced about 1½ inches apart and caught along their top edges inside a fabric binding strip. The published finished banner measures 7½ × 41½ inches. These are specifications from the pattern, not independent measurements.

American Patchwork & Quilting’s AllPeopleQuilt page, marked updated April 7, 2026, credits the inspiration to Heather Briggs’s “Heart on a String,” names the Roses Are Red collection by Sara Boccaccini Meadows for Figo Fabrics, and identifies Sarah Huechteman as project tester. That collection is an example, not a requirement: the instructions allow assorted red, pink, and white prints. See the Hearts-on-a-String Banner pattern.
Fabric and cutting requirements
The pattern’s yardage and cutting directions assume fabric with 42 inches of usable width. All measurements include ¼-inch seam allowances.

Because the small colored squares are sewn diagonally to white rectangles to build the heart, accurate cutting and marking help the mirrored pieces meet cleanly.

How the five fabric flags are assembled
- Mark the small squares. On the wrong side of the small red or pink squares, draw the diagonal sewing lines specified in the pattern.
- Piece each heart. Use the colored squares and white rectangles to make mirrored half-heart units, then join the halves into a 3½-inch heart unit.
- Frame the heart. Add the remaining colored rectangles to form a 6½ × 8-inch block for each flag.
- Shape the flag. Trim the lower corners of the heart block and its backing rectangle. With right sides together, sew around the edges while leaving the top open.
- Turn and press. Turn each flag right side out, shape its corners, and press.
- Join flags to the binding. Fold the 2 × 42-inch strip into a narrow double-fold casing. Arrange the five flags along it with about 1½ inches between flags, then stitch the long binding edges together so they enclose the flag tops.
No-sew option: paper hearts and jute
If you do not want to piece fabric or use a sewing machine, Marty’s Musings describes a separate approach using heart-shaped paper gift bags. Open the bags flat, cut or punch hearts, make two holes in each, and thread jute through them. A Cricut or a large heart punch can be used to cut the shapes; decorative mesh is an optional styling element in that example. Measure the mantel or display area first, then choose a heart count that suits the space. This makes a paper garland, not the five-flag quilted pattern. Read the paper-banner instructions.
