Stitching in the ditch is machine quilting along the seam lines where pieces of a quilt top join. Sew accurately in the seam—or just on its low side—so the quilting blends into the join and helps define the blocks. Baste the quilt sandwich first, then use a suitable feed foot or seam guide if it helps you control the layers.

What stitching in the ditch means
The “ditch” is the seam line between joined pieces of a quilt top. Quilting along it can secure the top, batting, and backing while leaving stitches less conspicuous than quilting across the fabric. The technique depends on accurate tracking: stitches that wander onto a block may show more clearly. American Patchwork & Quilting’s tips describe the method and its use to define blocks.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Before sewing, stack the backing, batting, and quilt top and baste the layers together. Basting helps prevent the layers from shifting as they move through the machine. Kimberbell’s instructions cover sandwich preparation and basting.

Choose thread and a presser foot
Thread for less visible quilting
Choose a thread color that blends with the quilt top if you want the quilting to recede. Select bobbin thread with the backing in mind, or match it to the top thread as the project requires. Thread choice cannot compensate for inaccurate stitching, so take time to follow the seam.
Walking or even-feed foot
A walking or even-feed foot can help feed the quilt layers evenly. It may not have a guide for tracking the seam, so use the needle position and any center mark on the foot to keep your stitching aligned. Brother’s guide explains use of its dynamic walking foot.

Stitch-in-the-ditch foot or guide
A dedicated ditch foot typically has a central guide that rides along a seam. A regular presser foot with a center mark can also help you track the line. These accessories are not universal: fit and setup depend on the sewing machine, its feed system, and the specific foot.
For example, PFAFF’s 2022 accessory guide describes a stitch-in-the-ditch foot for machines with its IDT system. Its guidance specifies a centered needle position and lists compatible machine groups. Brother describes a stitch-in-the-ditch plate as an attachment for a compatible dynamic walking foot. Check your machine’s manual and the attachment’s compatibility information before installing or buying a foot; do not assume that an accessory from another brand will fit.

How to stitch in the ditch
- Baste the sandwich. Secure the backing, batting, and quilt top together before quilting.
- Set up the machine. Install a compatible walking/even-feed foot or ditch foot, if using one. Follow the manual for installation, feed-system settings, and needle position. A centered needle and a foot’s guide or center mark can help track the seam when the machine setup calls for them.
- Position the quilt. Align the needle with the seam line. Handi Quilter’s guidance recommends stitching on the low side of the seam, where the stitches can settle into the join.
- Sew slowly and steer steadily. Guide the quilt so the needle follows the seam. Check the line as you work rather than relying on the presser-foot guide alone.
- Work in a planned order. Stitch chosen seams systematically—for example, around blocks—so you can manage the quilt as it passes through the machine.
- Finish the edges. After quilting, trim excess batting and backing, then bind the quilt as desired.
Handi Quilter and Fons & Porter’s guide discusses stitching on the low side of the seam; Kimberbell’s instructions include finishing steps.

A quilting ruler is another possible aid, but rulers differ for domestic-machine and longarm setups. Check that a ruler is intended for your machine type before using it.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- ★ 100% Gassed and Mercerized cotton thread: made from high quality, Extra-long staple cotton which is stronger than normal cotton; produced under special gassing and mercerizing process, giving thread less lint, smoother surface, greater luster and matt look.
- ★ Multi-purpose: 600M(660Y) each spool. Single-Ply yarn is 50 weight, and our cotton thread is 3-Ply twisted bonded ( the actual weight is 30WT = Tex 33 for three plies) can be widely used for quilting, serger, piecing, machine sewing, hand sewing, heavy machine embroidery and light hand embroidery etc.
- ★ Ideal Choice For Natural Fabrics: Our mercerized cotton thread is especially suitable for natural fabric like cotton and linen fabrics. Since it has almost same washing shrinkage rate as natural fabric, it can avoid causing pucker after washing because of the different shrinkage between fabrics and threads.
- ★ Spool with Locking Base Resists Thread Tangling: Our new generation snapping spool has a locking base, which is designed for keeping your thread tails from unwinding. If your regular sewing machines haven’t horizontal spool feed and you want to use our good snapping spool, you need a upright thread stand to help leading thread from snapping spools to your machines.
- ★★★ Tips for better using New brothread mercerized cotton thread: 1), our mercerized cotton thread is thicker than normal 40WT sewing or embroidery thread, we recommend use needles with large eye (≥80/12) to prevent stripping. 2), the cotton threads do not stretch a great deal like polyester or nylon threads, please slow down the stitching speed when you have breaking problem.
