Hikaru dorodango is a Japanese craft in which earth and water are shaped into a sphere, dried, and polished until the surface shines. You can make one with mud, fine dry soil, and a soft cloth; the key is building and smoothing a compact outer layer rather than applying a separate gloss.
What is hikaru dorodango?
The Japanese term hikaru dorodango (光る泥だんご) is commonly translated as “shining mud ball” or “mud dumpling.” It is both a form of play and a small-scale earth craft: shape damp soil into a ball, add fine dry earth to form a surface, let it dry, then polish it.

The exact origin is unknown. Making mud balls was a traditional children’s pastime in Japan. In the late 1990s, Kyoto University of Education professor Fumio Kayo helped revive and systematize the practice through research into children’s play. Web Japan recounts that Kayo encountered polished dorodango at a Kyoto nursery school around 1999 and developed a method children could follow.
How do you make a shiny mud ball?
The method is a gradual shift from wet shaping to dry surface work. Aim for a sphere with no open cracks, then add and compact fine soil in thin layers rather than trying to create a polished surface all at once.

- Make a workable mud lump. Use earth and water to form a lump, then squeeze out most of the excess water so it holds together without being sloppy.
- Shape the core. Roll and press the mud into the most even sphere you can. Close voids and smooth rough areas; an uneven core makes it harder to achieve a uniform shell.
- Build the outer layer. Sprinkle fine, dry dirt onto the ball a little at a time while turning, shaping, and gently compacting it. Continue until the surface is covered and feels more stable.
- Let the shell firm up. Allow the surface to dry enough to become hard. If needed, smooth it gently as it firms; avoid pressing hard enough to crack or deform the ball.
- Polish only when dry. Buff the hardened surface with a soft rag or cloth. The Japan Information & Culture Center says an ordinary rag can bring the surface to a high gloss.
There is no need to buy specialized equipment. A soft cloth is enough for the final buff; fine dry soil is the essential material for building a smooth surface. A soil sieve can help prepare fine soil, but it is optional.
Why does dorodango shine?
The shine comes from a tightly smoothed surface that reflects light more evenly. A 2013 Japan Science and Technology Agency Science Portal report on a Hokkaido University Museum workshop describes clay particles as flat and about 2 micrometres or smaller. Pressing and smoothing these fine particles reduces diffuse scattering, allowing more light to reflect from the surface in a way that appears glossy.

That is why gradual layering and careful polishing matter: they help create a compact, smooth outer surface. The workshop report also describes using the edge of a glass bottle as a smoothing tool, adding colored mud paint, and polishing. That is one documented workshop approach, not a requirement for making a dorodango.
How long does a dorodango take to dry?
Drying time varies with the soil, humidity, ball size, and technique. In the Hokkaido University Museum’s 2013 workshop report, the activity took about 1.5 hours to complete, while the balls took about 10 days to dry fully. Treat those as workshop-specific reference points, not a universal schedule: a ball may be ready for handling or polishing before it has dried all the way through.

For the best chance of a clean finish, let the shell become hard before buffing. Polishing too early can disturb the surface; if it still feels soft or damp, give it more time.

- Time: A guided workshop may complete the hands-on activity in a session, but full drying can take much longer.
- Setting: Make one independently as a patient craft, or follow a guided workshop format such as the one documented by the Hokkaido University Museum.
Why make a dorodango?
The practice rewards attention to a simple material. Web Japan’s account of Kayo’s work emphasizes children’s concentration as they shape and polish; Indiana University’s 2019 History Harvest record describes educator Christopher Nunn using polished mudballs in art classes to explore natural materials, patience, and comfort. The value is not only the finished gloss: shaping earth by hand makes small changes in pressure and texture visible.
William Gibson described hikaru dorodango as “An artifact of such utter simplicity and perfection that it seems it must be either the first object or the last…” The quotation is reproduced on dorodango.com and attributed there to Gibson’s Tate essay.
