Holi colours are the coloured powders and liquids used in many celebrations of Holi, the spring festival. The powder is commonly called gulal or gulaal. Some colours can be made from ingredients such as leafy greens, beetroot, turmeric and Palash flowers, but “natural” or “herbal” on a label does not by itself show that a powder is suitable for every use or every person.
What are Holi colours?
Holi is celebrated across India, with regional practices that vary. In many celebrations, people throw coloured powder, called gulal or gulaal, and water. Incredible India describes Holi as a spring festival commonly observed on the full-moon day of the Hindu lunisolar month of Phalguna, and associates it with spring and Radha and Krishna traditions. Its account describes green as associated with rebirth, red with marriage and fertility, yellow with purity and victory, and blue with Lord Krishna; these are associations reported by that source, not universal meanings shared by every community.
The festival’s date changes from year to year. Incredible India lists March 4, 2026 as the date for that year; check a current calendar for the year you plan to celebrate rather than treating that date as fixed. Incredible India: Holi, the festival of colours.

What is gulal made of?
There is no single formula for every Holi powder. India’s Science, Technology & Innovation Portal lists a CSIR–National Botanical Research Institute technology for herbal dry colours and herbal Holi gulal. A 2026 campaign by India’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change described workshops demonstrating natural colours made from edible and leafy vegetables, including these examples:
- Green: leafy greens
- Red: beetroot
- Yellow: turmeric
- Orange: Palash flowers
These are documented examples of colour-making approaches, not the ingredient list for any particular shop-bought powder. The portal’s listing describes a technology, not a guarantee about the composition of all products sold as gulal. How to choose Holi colour powder
Assess the specific product, not just a broad claim such as “natural,” “herbal” or “eco-friendly.” Read its packaging and product documentation before use. Useful checks include:
- Ingredients: Look for a clearly stated ingredient list rather than relying on a general marketing description.
- Intended use: Confirm that the manufacturer says the product is meant for the way you plan to use it. A colour intended for one purpose is not automatically suitable for another.
- Manufacturer: Check that the maker is identified and that the product information is attributable to them.
- Directions and warnings: Follow the stated directions and take listed warnings seriously.
- Form: Check whether it is dry powder or another formulation; products that look like “Holi colours” can be intended for different uses.
These checks help you understand what a product claims and how it is meant to be used; they do not independently establish that it is safe for every person or situation.

Are Holi colours safe for skin?
There is no blanket answer for all gulal. Safety depends on the particular product, its ingredients, its intended use and the conditions described on its label. Calling a powder natural or herbal does not establish that it is suitable for skin, eyes, inhalation or any other use.
For U.S. readers, FDA rules apply to products within the agency’s remit, not universally to every Holi powder or every country. FDA says color additives must be approved for their intended uses in regulated products; approval for one use does not mean approval for another. The agency also says cosmetic companies and individuals marketing cosmetics are responsible for product safety under labeled or customary conditions. Holi colour powder is not necessarily a cosmetic, so do not assume cosmetic rules describe every product in this category. See the FDA’s guidance on color additives and cosmetic ingredients.
