A north arrow is a map symbol that shows where north lies in relation to the map. It helps readers orient a map, especially when the map is rotated or its direction is not otherwise obvious. North is often at the top by convention, but it is not always there.
What a north arrow shows
Esri defines a north arrow as a map symbol showing the direction of north and, therefore, how the map is oriented. It indicates direction on the page; it does not by itself show the reader’s current location or route. Esri’s GIS Dictionary describes the symbol.

No. North-at-the-top is a common convention, not a rule. A map may be rotated to fit a page or to make a particular area easier to read, and an image may have a different orientation. Natural Resources Canada puts it plainly: “North isn’t always to the top, although that is a popular convention.” Its compass guidance discusses using a compass rose or north arrow to determine image orientation.

Which north does the arrow indicate?
“North” can refer to different directions. The distinction matters when a map is used for precise navigation, surveying, or field work.
- True north points toward the geographic North Pole, where lines of longitude converge.
- Magnetic north is the direction a magnetic compass indicates. It changes over time, so a magnetic reference depends on both location and date.
- Grid north follows the map’s coordinate grid. Because a flat map represents a curved Earth, grid north can differ from true north.
The Ordnance Survey explains these distinctions in its guide to north arrows. A map may show more than one reference in a declination diagram. The U.S. Government Publishing Office’s Basic Land Navigation notes that most USGS maps show arrows for geographic, magnetic, and grid north. If an arrow is meant to represent magnetic or grid north, the map should make that clear where the distinction affects how readers use it.

When is a north arrow useful?
- Rotated maps: Include one when north does not point toward the top edge and readers need to understand the map’s orientation. Tom Vitacco, Director of GIS at Rand McNally Publishing, says the company generally includes arrows because its maps are often rotated to fit the paper. His comment appears in Rand McNally Publishing’s “Ask a Cartographer” article.
- Unfamiliar places: An arrow can help readers connect the map to their surroundings when the area or page orientation is not familiar.
- Navigation and surveying: Show the relevant directional reference, especially when users need to relate the map grid, geographic direction, or compass direction.
- Already clear north-up maps: An arrow may be redundant if the map is north-up, the area is familiar, or another directional reference makes orientation clear.
There is no universal requirement to add an arrow. The Ordnance Survey cautions that one can be inaccurate in some situations, including when projection geometry makes a single direction an oversimplification. The National Wildfire Coordinating Group’s map-elements guidance likewise treats the north arrow as an incident-map element and notes magnetic declination or grid angle as optional elements.
North arrow or compass rose?
A north arrow typically marks north with an arrow or graphic, often alongside “N.” A compass rose usually presents several cardinal directions and may be more decorative. Both can help orient a reader, but they do not necessarily communicate the same amount or kind of directional information. Choose the symbol that makes the map’s orientation clearest without implying a directional reference the map does not support.
