Short answer: plant-based hair color is not one uniform category. Henna (Lawsonia) is the only ingredient in the available evidence with a defined U.S. hair-dye regulatory use. Indigo and cassia are discussed as plant colorants, while beet juice is described as unable to create a durable dye. “Natural” does not guarantee safety, and the exact seven plants, reliable formulas, processing times and shade charts for this title are not established by authoritative sources.

Use the guide below to separate a potentially durable botanical dye from a temporary stain, set realistic expectations for your starting hair, and avoid the risks associated with mislabeled or adulterated products.

What counts as a plant hair dye?

A plant ingredient may color hair in several different ways: a relatively durable dye that binds to the hair, a temporary surface stain, or a rinse whose visible effect is weak or disappears quickly. Those outcomes are not interchangeable. Hair porosity, natural shade, gray percentage, previous dye or bleach, and the identity and purity of the product all affect the result.

The evidence available for this topic does not identify a validated set of seven DIY plants. It supports cautious discussion of henna, indigo, cassia and beet juice only. Rather than invent recipes or promise fixed shades, treat any unverified botanical mixture as an experiment with an uncertain result.

Seven entries, with evidence and limits made explicit

Entry Likely role What can reasonably be expected Main uncertainty or risk
1. Henna (Lawsonia) Plant hair dye FDA identifies henna as an approved color additive for hair-dye use in the United States. It can add warm copper, red or auburn-looking tones, but the final shade depends on the starting hair and product. FDA approval concerns the ingredient’s permitted use, not a guarantee of a particular DIY shade, permanence or safety for every person.
2. Indigo Plant colorant Specialist educational material discusses indigo as a plant used for hair color. It is commonly considered for blue, blue-black or cooler results, especially in systems that also use henna. Outcome depends heavily on starting color, sequence and formulation; no universal ratio or timing is established here.
3. Cassia Plant colorant or conditioning treatment Specialist educational material lists cassia among plants used on hair. Its visible effect is generally subtler than a strongly pigmented dye and may be most noticeable on light or gray hair. Do not assume it will produce a fixed “blonde” or permanent shade; evidence for a reproducible home formula is limited.
4. Beet juice Temporary tint or stain The available specialist discussion warns that beet juice will not durably dye hair. Any pink, red or purple cast should be treated as temporary and variable. It may be difficult to see on dark hair and may rinse out quickly or transfer to fabric.
5–7. Other plants Not established by the available evidence No specific plants, validated recipes, shade outcomes or durability claims can be supplied responsibly for these three entries. Filling the gaps with popular internet recipes would create unsupported safety and performance claims.

How to choose based on your starting hair

Light, gray or bleached hair

Plant pigments generally show more clearly on a light base, but porous or bleached hair can absorb unevenly and may hold a stain longer than expected. Do a strand test before applying anything to the whole head.

Medium to dark brown hair

Subtle botanical tones may be visible only in bright light. A temporary rinse such as beet juice may produce little or no obvious change, while a pigmented dye can shift warmth or depth without making hair lighter.

Previously dyed, relaxed or chemically treated hair

Existing color and chemical processing change porosity and can make results patchy. A strand test is particularly important, and a professional colorist is the safer choice when you are trying to correct or overlay an unpredictable result.

Henna: the clearest regulatory distinction

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration states that henna, a coloring made from a plant, is approved only for use as a hair dye. That is a use-specific regulatory statement, not permission to use every henna-labeled product on skin or to assume every powder is pure.

“Black henna” is a warning term rather than a synonym for pure henna. FDA explains that the ingredient added to blacken henna is often a coal-tar hair dye containing p-phenylenediamine (PPD), which can cause dangerous skin reactions in some people. Henna intended for hair should not be used as body art.

Why “natural” does not mean risk-free

FDA’s homemade-cosmetics guidance says that choosing ingredients considered organic or natural is no guarantee that they are safe. Plants can irritate or sensitize skin, powders can be contaminated or mislabeled, and added dyes can change the risk profile completely.

Safer application procedure

  1. Perform a strand test. Apply the prepared product to a hidden section of hair and observe the color and condition before committing to your whole head.
  2. Patch test before each use. FDA advises testing on the inside of the elbow or behind the ear for two days. A negative patch test cannot guarantee that a reaction will not occur elsewhere.
  3. Protect your skin and clothing. Wear gloves, use an old towel and apply a barrier around the hairline without getting product in your eyes.
  4. Follow the product directions exactly. Do not substitute kitchen ratios or extend processing time in an attempt to intensify an uncertain formula.
  5. Rinse the scalp well. Stop immediately and rinse if you feel burning, swelling, severe itching or pain. Seek medical care for breathing difficulty, facial swelling or a rapidly worsening reaction.

Temporary stain versus durable dye

A temporary stain sits largely on or near the hair surface and fades with washing. A more durable plant dye changes the hair’s color through pigment that remains after rinsing, although it still varies with hair condition and maintenance. Beet juice belongs in the temporary-tint category based on the available specialist discussion; henna is the only option here with a clearly stated U.S. hair-dye regulatory use.

No plant mixture should be described as permanent without product-specific evidence. “Permanent” in hair-color marketing also does not mean the color can never fade or that new growth will match.

Questions to answer before you mix anything

  • What exact color family do you want, and is your current hair light enough for it to show?
  • Is the ingredient labeled for hair, or is it a food, craft or body-art product?
  • Has your hair been bleached, relaxed, permed or dyed recently?
  • Can you test both a strand and your skin before the full application?
  • Would an unpredictable result be difficult to correct?

If the answer to the last question is yes, choose a clearly labeled hair-color product or consult a licensed professional rather than relying on an unverified seven-plant recipe.
