An effective homepage quickly tells visitors where they are, what the site offers, and what useful step they can take next. Start with your audience and site goal, then organize the page around identity, a clear value proposition, useful navigation, concise content, and a prioritized call to action. Check mobile and accessibility needs, test links and layout, and use real visitor behavior to guide improvements.
There is no single layout that works for every site. A service business may prioritize proof and booking, an online store product discovery, and a portfolio selected work and inquiries.
What Makes a Homepage Effective?
A homepage should help visitors understand what they can do and why the site matters to them. Nielsen and Tahir, authors of Homepage Usability: 50 Websites Deconstructed, put it this way: “If the homepage doesn’t communicate what users can do and why they should care about the website, you might as well not have a website at all.” Nielsen Norman Group
An effective homepage:
- Explains the site’s purpose in clear, audience-focused language.
- Provides useful, understandable navigation.
- Makes the main next step obvious without giving competing actions equal prominence.
- Uses a visual hierarchy that supports the visitor’s task.
- Works at narrow viewports and when text is zoomed.
- Has meaningful headings, links, page regions, and accessible controls.
- Is tested across browsers and devices, then improved using observed results.
The homepage is a gateway, not a place to include every detail. Link to dedicated pages for deeper service information, product categories, policies, or other content visitors may need.

Plan the Homepage Before You Design
Begin by deciding who the page serves, what visitors should do, and what impression the brand should create. Then gather the essentials: the business or brand name, useful imagery, concise copy, and calls to action. An early version can be brief; a title, a few sentences, and a clear next step can be enough to get started.
- Set the goal. Identify the audience, the main visitor action, and the impression you want the brand to create.
- Gather the essentials. Prepare a recognizable identity, useful images, concise copy, and calls to action.
- Choose the information order. Explain what the site does, then make the main sections and action easy to find.
- Prioritize the visual hierarchy. Use size, spacing, contrast, and imagery to distinguish the main action from secondary options.
- Adapt the design. Check narrow screens, zoomed text, keyboard navigation, and screen-reader structure.
- Test and revise. Check links and behavior across browsers and devices; after launch, use visitor behavior to guide changes.
For an online store, keep category routes and search visible alongside featured products or promotions. For a service business, make the service and booking or contact route clear. A portfolio should show selected work and provide a way to inquire.
Core Homepage Elements
Identity and a clear value proposition
Make the brand or business easy to recognize and describe plainly what the site offers. A visitor should not have to decode a slogan to understand whether the site is relevant. State the audience, product, service, or outcome in language visitors recognize.
Useful navigation and routes
Make important sections easy to find. For an ecommerce homepage, visitors may need category navigation, search, and curated routes to products. Baymard Institute’s homepage and category navigation research discusses these product-finding paths and the need to balance them with brand and product presentation.

A prioritized call to action
Choose the main action that best serves the visitor and the site’s goal, such as requesting an estimate, booking an appointment, shopping a category, or viewing selected work. Secondary actions can remain available, but should not compete equally with the priority. Shopify recommends using relative size, contrast, and white space to distinguish multiple calls to action. Shopify’s homepage design guidance
Concise, useful content
Use short sections that answer visitor questions and support the site’s purpose. Explain the offer, show relevant examples, and link to details where needed. Avoid filling the page with text or promotional elements that make it harder to find the main routes.

Choose an Information Order That Fits the Site
Use the visitor’s main task to decide what appears first and what follows. A practical sequence is:
- Recognizable identity and a plain description of the site’s purpose
- Primary navigation and the main call to action
- Key products, services, work, or routes relevant to the visitor
- Supporting information and proof that helps visitors decide
- Further navigation or contact options
This is a starting point, not a universal template. A store should support product discovery; a service site should make the service and next step clear; a portfolio should put selected work where visitors can find it.

Evaluate the real user experience, not just how the page looks in a design tool. Google web.dev recommends assessing Core Web Vitals using field data, which captures real device, network, and interaction conditions. Its good-experience targets are measured at the 75th percentile of page loads and should be segmented across mobile and desktop. These are user-experience targets, not guarantees of sales or conversions. Google web.dev’s Web Vitals guidance
| Metric | Good-experience target | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) | 2.5 seconds or less | Loading performance |
| Interaction to Next Paint (INP) | 200 milliseconds or less | Interactivity |
| Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) | 0.1 or less | Visual stability |
Use lab measurements to test changes before release, and field data to understand the experience visitors actually have. No single visual formula or metric establishes that a homepage will convert better.

- Revise based on evidence. Adjust copy, action placement, or content when visitor behavior shows a need.
Testing is ongoing: the research supports a process of checking links and behavior before and after launch, then making revisions based on observed results. It does not establish a universal conversion formula.

Common Homepage Mistakes
- Unclear purpose: Make it easy to understand what the site offers and why it matters.
- Competing calls to action: Give one action visual priority and keep secondary actions accessible.
- Hidden routes: Keep important sections, product categories, or search easy to find.
- Desktop-only thinking: Check the layout on narrow screens and with enlarged text.
- Visual polish without usability checks: Test links, controls, and page behavior across browsers and devices.
- Unsupported claims: Use evidence for claims and do not imply that a metric guarantees business outcomes.
FAQ
What should a homepage include?
At minimum, make the site’s identity and purpose clear, provide useful navigation, and show the main action visitors can take. Add the products, services, work, or information most relevant to the site’s audience.
How many calls to action should a homepage have?
There is no universal number, but one action should have clear visual priority. Keep secondary actions available without making them appear equally important.
How should I test a homepage before launch?
Check links and page behavior across browsers and devices, including mobile. Review keyboard access, screen-reader structure, contrast, and zoomed text. After launch, observe whether visitors complete the intended action and revise accordingly.
What are the Core Web Vitals targets for a good experience?
Google web.dev lists targets of LCP at 2.5 seconds or less, INP at 200 milliseconds or less, and CLS at 0.1 or less. They are experience targets, not guarantees of sales or conversions.
The Bottom Line
An effective homepage makes the site’s purpose and the next step clear. Start with the audience and goal, organize the page around the visitor’s task, prioritize navigation and calls to action, and check accessibility, mobile behavior, links, and real user experience.
