A banner ad has little space to earn attention from people already focused on something else. The most useful design makes the offer easy to grasp, uses an image that helps explain it, and gives the viewer a clear next step—all while fitting the placement. There is no universally perfect look: the right design depends on the campaign, audience, and format.
What makes a banner ad effective?
An effective banner connects four things: the audience, the offer, the visual, and the action. A striking image cannot rescue an unclear message, and a strong headline loses value if the click leads somewhere that does not deliver what it promised.
- Campaign fit: Shape the message around the intended audience and campaign purpose rather than assuming one banner suits every segment. IAB UK’s creative best-practice guidance emphasizes matching creative to purpose and audience.
- Message clarity: Make the product, service, or benefit understandable quickly. Google Ads Help advises: “Use a clear and simple text to describe your product, service, or brand.”
- Placement fit: Check that the composition remains legible in the intended size and shape.
- Destination continuity: Ensure the landing page delivers the offer or action named in the ad.
- Measured outcome: Judge variations against a campaign KPI, not an assumed universal design rule.
How should you build the design?
1. Set the campaign’s job
Decide who the ad is for, what that person should understand, and what they should do next. Choose the outcome to measure—such as leads or sales—before comparing creative, so the test has a defined purpose.

2. Create a simple visual hierarchy
Lead with one recognizable product, service, or benefit. Pair it with a clear brand mark and a concise headline; keep supporting details short enough to remain readable at the expected display size. The image should explain or reinforce the offer, not compete with it.
For responsive display ads, Google recommends high-quality images focused on the product or service and advises against overlaid text, buttons, collages, and digital composite backgrounds. Because the platform can combine uploaded assets in different arrangements, each headline, image, and brand element should make sense alongside the others.

3. Write plainly and make the action explicit
Use specific, readable copy rather than generic claims, all caps, or clickbait. A call to action should make the next step plain. If the banner promotes a particular offer or asks someone to call, make that promotion or phone number easy to find on the destination page too. Google’s display-ad tips cover copy, calls to action, and matching the landing page to the ad.

4. Prepare images for the placement
For Google responsive display image assets, the guidance lists these aspect ratios and pixel dimensions. These are Google Ads specifications, not universal requirements for every publisher or fixed-size ad; check the current requirements for the campaign before delivery.
| Image format | Aspect ratio | Recommended size | Minimum size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Landscape | 1.91:1 | 1200 × 628 px | 600 × 314 px |
| Square | 1:1 | 1200 × 1200 px | 300 × 300 px |
| Portrait | 9:16 | 900 × 1600 px | 600 × 1067 px |
Google advises supplying more landscape images than square or portrait images. Its guidance also says a brand logo should be clear and simple, using a 1:1 or 4:1 aspect ratio. Consult Google Ads’ display-ad guidance for the applicable asset requirements.

How do you make the banner stand out without sacrificing clarity?
Distinctiveness comes from making the offer relevant and the design coherent, not from adding visual noise. Choose an image that helps the intended audience recognize the product or benefit. Give the headline enough prominence to explain why the ad matters, and leave secondary information subordinate.
Before approving a design, check it in the actual aspect ratio and expected display size. In responsive placements, avoid making essential copy part of an image or relying on a button-like graphic that may be separated from the accompanying text. The ad’s call to action should be communicated clearly in the ad assets and supported by the destination.

Compare a small set of genuinely different options against the KPI chosen for the campaign. For example, test a different lead image or offer wording while keeping enough other elements stable to interpret the result. Google suggests creating three to four ads per ad group and says better-performing ads may be shown more often; that is platform guidance, not a guarantee that a particular design will win.
Use the same decision criteria for each version: audience and campaign fit, message clarity, placement legibility, landing-page continuity, measured result, and delivery quality. IAB UK’s guidance discusses testing and optimization by campaign segment and KPI. Its page also describes a WEX example in which a redesign was associated with a 19% decrease in cost of sale and an 11% increase in average order value; the page does not state the case’s publication year, so those figures should not be treated as a dated benchmark for other campaigns.

Which technical requirements should you check?
Use the current specification for the platform and placement rather than treating a fixed-size guide as a universal rule. IAB Tech Lab says its New Ad Portfolio replaces older mobile and desktop display creative guidelines and promotes flexible sizing, lightweight delivery, and less disruptive ad experiences.
For HTML5 creative, production choices matter as well as appearance: the format combines web technologies and assets, so complexity can affect delivery and performance. See IAB Tech Lab’s HTML5 for Digital Advertising guidance. Separately, Google’s advice to publishers using Google Publisher Tag is to consider additional ad sizes that fit comfortably in a slot; broader size support can make more ads eligible and may affect fill rates and publisher revenue. That is a publisher implementation consideration, not a promise of better results for an individual advertiser. Google’s Publisher Tag best practices explain the distinction.
