To resize an entire image in Photopea, choose Image – Image Size, enter a new dimension with proportions linked, and then use File – Export As to create the finished JPG, PNG, or other file.
To resize an entire image in Photopea, open it, choose Image – Image Size, enter a new width or height with the proportions linked, and then choose File – Export As to save the result as a JPG, PNG, or another usable file.
Resize the whole image in Photopea
- Open Photopea and choose File – Open, or drag the image into the editor. JPG and PNG files open as editable Photopea documents.
- Choose Image – Image Size. This is the command that scales the image content and changes its pixel dimensions.
- Enter the desired width or height. Keep the width and height linked if you want to preserve the image’s proportions.
- Apply the change. The image and its contents will be scaled to the new resolution.
- When you are finished, choose File – Export As and select the format you need, such as JPG or PNG.
For example, if a photograph is 4,000 pixels wide and you need a smaller web image, use Image – Image Size and change the width to 1,200 pixels while preserving the linked proportions. Photopea’s documented Image Size workflow also includes a DPI field for print-oriented documents.

Keep the image from becoming stretched
Do not normally enter unrelated width and height values with the proportions unlocked. If the original image is 4:3 and you force it into a 16:9 shape by changing both dimensions independently, people and objects will look stretched or squashed.
If you need a different shape, resize the image while keeping its proportions, then crop away the excess. Photopea’s official tutorial demonstrates this resize-then-crop approach when converting an image to a specific width and height: set a specific width, height, and DPI in Photopea.
Image Size, Canvas Size, or Crop?
These commands solve different problems. Choosing the wrong one is the most common reason a resized image does not look or measure as expected.
| What you want | Use | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Make the complete image larger or smaller | Image – Image Size | The image content is scaled and its pixel dimensions change. |
| Change the document boundary without scaling the artwork | Image – Canvas Size | The visible area changes while the existing content keeps its resolution and quality. Increasing the canvas adds space; decreasing it cuts off areas outside the new boundary. |
| Choose a new composition visually | Crop tool | You draw, move, resize, and optionally rotate a crop area before confirming it. |
When to use Canvas Size
Use Image – Canvas Size when the artwork is already the right size but the surrounding document needs to change. For example, you can add blank space around a painting or cut the document down to a smaller boundary without shrinking the painting itself. Canvas Size changes the window through which the content is viewed; it does not perform the same operation as Image Size.

When to use the Crop tool
Use the Crop tool when you want to frame the subject by eye. Draw the crop rectangle, reposition or resize it as needed, and confirm the crop. Cropping removes part of the image rather than squeezing the entire image into a new shape.
Resize for a specific width and height
First compare the source and target aspect ratios:
- If the ratios match, use Image – Image Size with linked proportions.
- If the target is wider or taller than the source, resize proportionally and then crop to the required frame.
- If every part of the image must remain visible, add space with Canvas Size instead of cropping.
- Only unlock the proportions when intentional distortion is part of the design.
For a painting or reference image, this distinction matters: scaling changes the size of the entire artwork, while cropping changes which parts remain visible. If the composition is important, make a copy or save an editable version before committing to a crop.
Pixel dimensions versus DPI
Pixel dimensions are the important settings for websites, social media, screen display, and most digital uploads. They determine how many pixels make up the image.
DPI is mainly relevant when preparing a file for a physical print size. Photopea’s Image Size dialog lets you enter a new DPI value, and its tutorial explains how physical measurements in inches relate to pixel dimensions at a chosen DPI. Changing the DPI value alone does not create new photographic detail; it changes the document’s resolution information and, depending on the settings, its relationship to a physical print size.

For a web upload, start with the required pixel width or height rather than choosing a DPI number simply because it sounds higher. For print, establish the intended physical dimensions and resolution together, then check the printer or publication’s specifications.
Export the resized image
- Choose File – Export As.
- Select an output format such as JPG, PNG, SVG, or PDF, depending on the type of artwork and where it will be used.
- Review the export settings. Photopea’s export window includes controls for the output size or resolution where applicable.
- Save the exported file, then open it or inspect its properties to confirm the dimensions, format, and file size.
JPG is usually practical for a normal photograph or a painting preview when a smaller distribution file is useful. PNG is preferable when you need lossless output or transparency. If you may need to edit layers or other document information later, preserve a PSD copy as well; Photopea identifies PSD as its main editable format and treats JPG, PNG, SVG, PDF, and similar formats as export options. The distinction between saving an editable document and exporting a distribution file is covered in Photopea’s opening and saving documentation.
Exporting does not necessarily replace the original image. Treat the exported file as a new file, and verify it before deleting or overwriting the source.
Common problems and fixes
The subject looks stretched
The width and height were probably changed independently. Return to Image – Image Size, link the proportions, and resize again. If the required shape is different, crop after the proportional resize rather than forcing the dimensions.

The dimensions are correct, but the composition is wrong
You may have scaled when you needed to reframe. Use the Crop tool for a visual composition change, or use Image – Canvas Size if you need to alter the document boundary without scaling the existing artwork.
The exported file is still too large
Check both the pixel dimensions and the export format. A smaller pixel size generally produces a smaller file, while JPG export settings can also affect file size. Review the export window’s available output controls, export the file, and check the resulting file rather than relying only on the dimensions shown in the open document.
The image looks blurry after making it larger
Increasing the dimensions enlarges the existing image; it does not guarantee newly created photographic detail. For the clearest result, start with the highest-resolution source available and avoid repeatedly resizing the same already-exported file.

For one image, the manual workflow above is the simplest option. For repeated work, Photopea also documents Variables for generating multiple exported images from spreadsheet data, as well as Actions and JavaScript scripts for repeatable editing workflows. These tools are more appropriate for batch resizing or a larger asset pipeline than for a single image.
