Hopscotch is a playground game played on a numbered grid: toss a small object into a square, hop through the grid without stepping on the lines or the object, then retrieve it on the way back. You can draw a temporary course with sidewalk chalk or use lines already marked on the ground.

What is hopscotch?

Hopscotch is a hopping game built around a numbered path of squares. In the version described by Playworks, players toss a small object into a target square, hop through the other open squares, and pick up the object on their return. Grid layouts and local rules can vary; there is no single standardized rule system established here.

“Hopscotch” can also refer to a coding app and website for making games, animations, art, and stories. That is a separate product from the playground game; see the official Hopscotch about page if that is what you meant.

What you need to set up a hopscotch course

  • A flat area with enough room for a grid.
  • Chalk to draw the squares, or existing playground lines you can use.
  • A small toss object, such as a stone or bean bag, for the version with a target square.

The course can vary in shape, size, and length. Number the squares in order so players can tell which square is the target on each turn. Chalk is optional if the playing area already has suitable lines, and the toss object is optional if you choose the simpler no-object version.

How to play hopscotch?

  1. Draw or choose a grid. Make a numbered course with chalk or use existing playground markings.
  2. Choose the target. On a player’s first turn, the target is the first square. Use a small stone or bean bag as the marker.
  3. Toss the marker. Aim it into the target square. A missed toss ends the attempt in the Playworks version.
  4. Hop through the course. Hop on one foot in a single square and land with both feet in side-by-side squares. Skip the square containing the marker. Stepping on a line ends the attempt in the Playworks version.
  5. Retrieve the marker on the way back. Keep to the hopping pattern, pick up the object without stepping into its square as a landing square, and return to the start.
  6. Advance the target after a successful turn. Players who complete a turn move the target square forward on their next attempt. Agree in advance how turns and missed attempts work for your group.

Common ways to adapt the game

Because layouts and local rules differ, agree on the course and the foot pattern before play begins. These two options capture the main choices in the Playworks guide:

Why use chalk?

Sidewalk chalk is a practical way to make a temporary numbered grid when no playground markings are available. Draw squares large enough for players to land in comfortably, and make the numbers clear. If you have suitable existing lines, you can use those instead. The Playworks guide states balance and coordination as the game’s intended development goal; it does not provide a quantified outcome figure.
