“Girl arch” is not a standard drawing term, so this tutorial uses it to mean a girl or woman leaning backward with a visible curve through the torso. You can draw the pose from the side, back, or three-quarter view; the steps below use a three-quarter view as a clear starting point. Begin with movement and simple forms, then refine the figure.
What you need before you start
Use ordinary paper and a 2HB pencil if you have one. A University of Fashion lesson on a female side-back pose specifies a 2HB pencil, but it is an option, not a requirement: any pencil that lets you sketch lightly will work. Keep an eraser nearby, and avoid pressing hard while laying in the construction.

How to draw the arched pose
1. Set the pose and page bounds
Lightly mark the space the figure will occupy, leaving room for the head, torso, pelvis, arms, and legs. Draw a single flowing line to suggest the direction of the pose: in this case, the backward lean and the curve of the torso. Choose a side, back, or three-quarter view before adding details. A three-quarter view can show both the backward lean and some of the figure’s front-to-back form.
2. Place the main forms
Sketch the rib cage and pelvis as simple, separate masses, then place the head and shoulders. Tilt these forms to suit the pose rather than stacking them upright. Keep their connection loose for now; their angles should suggest a body leaning back, not a set of isolated shapes.

3. Check the arch, balance, and limbs
Connect the rib cage and pelvis with the torso, shaping the back into a clear curve. Add the arms and legs as simple directional lines or forms, placing them so the figure’s balance and gesture make sense. Compare the head, torso, pelvis, and limbs against one another before refining. If the pose feels stiff, revisit the line of action; if it feels wobbly, clarify how the torso and pelvis support the gesture.

4. Refine anatomy and character
Develop the shoulders, waist, hips, and joints, then add the face, hair, and clothing. Use proportion as a guide rather than a rigid ideal: bodies vary, and the character or style you want to draw may call for different proportions. Keep checking the pose as you refine so that anatomy and clothing follow the same backward lean.

5. Finish with selective linework and shading
Choose the contours that best explain the form and clean them up; erase construction marks where they distract. Add restrained shading or color to distinguish the torso, limbs, and clothing. Step back or view the drawing at a smaller size: the silhouette should still read as a leaning-back pose, not just a collection of carefully drawn outlines.
Choose a view and style that suit your goal
The angle changes what the drawing communicates. A side view makes the curve of the back easy to read; a back view emphasizes the shoulders and spine; a three-quarter view can reveal both the arch and the body’s depth. For a fashion-illustration approach, you can simplify anatomy and emphasize the clothing silhouette. For a more realistic or stylized result, keep the gesture clear while adapting the proportions and details. These are drawing choices, not ranked methods.

Common problems and quick fixes
- The figure looks stiff: Return to the flowing line of action and adjust the tilt of the rib cage and pelvis before polishing contours.
- The torso looks disconnected: Rework the transition between rib cage and pelvis so the curve reads as one supported movement.
- The pose is hard to read: Check the silhouette and limb directions, and simplify details that obscure the backward lean.
- The proportions feel forced: Treat proportion rules as flexible guides, not requirements for every body or style.
Why start with gesture and structure?
Gesture establishes the movement and direction of a pose; structure gives that movement support. Too little structure can make the figure feel unstable, while too much can make it rigid. Building the drawing from a clear gesture, connected body masses, and then selected details helps keep both qualities in view.
