The Hourglass Made Easy Bed Quilt is a square-based quilt pattern from AllPeopleQuilt.com. It finishes at 81½ × 95 inches and uses 168 hourglass blocks, each finishing at 6¾ inches square. The pattern is attributed to American Patchwork & Quilting Editors, inspired by Tammy Kelly’s “Happy Medium,” and lists Kathy Williams as quiltmaker. See the official pattern.
Finished size and layout
The completed quilt measures 81½ × 95 inches. Its top consists of 168 hourglass blocks arranged in 14 horizontal rows. Each block finishes at 6¾ inches square; the pieced block is cut at 7¼ inches square, including seam allowances, before it is sewn into the quilt top.

The pattern page says the arrangement does not have to follow a particular order: the diagonal seams and darker fabrics create graphic angles across the quilt. That flexibility makes this a useful design for assorted coordinated blue and green prints rather than a layout dependent on matching a specific sequence.
Fabric and batting requirements
The listed fabric quantities assume 44/45-inch-wide, 100% cotton fabrics. Measurements include ¼-inch seam allowances.

The pattern specifies fabric categories and amounts, not particular prints, batting loft, or a brand. Choose prints with enough contrast for the diagonal hourglass pieces to remain visually distinct.
How the hourglass blocks are made
Each block begins with square pieces. The method first creates triangle-square units, then combines two units into an hourglass block by sewing across a second diagonal.

- Mark a diagonal line on selected 8-inch squares. The pattern suggests placing 220-grit sandpaper beneath a square while marking to help keep the fabric from stretching.
- Pair each marked square with an unmarked square. Sew ¼ inch from each side of the marked diagonal, then cut along the line and press the pieces open to make triangle-square units.
- Pair triangle-square units with their seams aligned. Mark a perpendicular diagonal across the pair, sew ¼ inch on each side of that line, cut along the line, and press the resulting pieces open into hourglass blocks.
- Trim or square the blocks as needed to 7¼ inches, including seam allowances.
Assembling and finishing the quilt
Lay out the blocks in 14 rows, then sew the blocks into rows and join the rows to complete the top. Layer the top with the specified batting and backing, baste the layers, quilt as desired, and bind the edges with the medium blue print.
